What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

Jumbo 808 Micro HD Camera Review

I’ve decided to grab the bull by the horns and do something about the naming convention of these cameras because it’s getting out of hand….. let me explain.

If I were to go on Google with the intention of finding a review of the Sony HDR-TG7 camcorder, I’d search for “Sony HDR-TG7 Review” and amongst all the spam link-bait sites, I'd get some results that met with my requirements.

Unfortunately it's not as easy for people trying to find out information about this camera. The manufacturer goes by at least eight different names and they don’t have a homepage. The camera itself doesn’t even have a defined name. The previous model was known as the 808 #11 only because Chuck Lohr had been diligent enough to determine that it was the 11th Revision of the 808 camera. Versions 1-10 had varied resolutions between 640x480, 740x480 and upscaled 1280x960.

Version #11 of the 808 camera was the first one that recorded using the h264 .mov format in 1280x720. Prior to this model coming out, version #3 was generally considered the best one – but most of them had circuitry that was made by a number of different manufacturers incased in the same car keyfob case design.

This latest larger model has already been referred to as the Jumbo 808, the HD818, HD828, the V3 etc. So to make things easier for myself from now on I’m going to simplify things.

I’m going to call all these mini cameras that use MicroSD and record in HD – “Micro HD Cameras” and I’m going to call the older camera the “808 #11” and this new one the “Jumbo 808”. Hopefully this will make things easier to undstand.

So with that said,  below is my review of the Jumbo 808 camera. I originally intended to just make a brief update – but in the end I decided upon making a full review. So if you’ve seen my 808 #11 review then you'll know most of this info already.

There are two important bits of information below that will hopefully pre-empt the majority of queries.

Here is a link to Eletoponline 365’s Jumbo 808 Auctions on ebay UK - You will find the camera here.

I've made a video that’s only been posted on this blog – because of it’s limited interest. This video explains how to change the Time & Date or flash the firmware. These procedures are identical whether you are using the 808 #11 or the Jumbo 808.

I put this instructional video together so that I can send people a link to it when I get asked about either of these procedures.

I have uploaded the firmwares used in the video on my Files & Drivers page. I am aware that people were having problems with some of the firmwares I’d uploaded in the past, I have no idea why as they all always worked for me. So again I’ve tested these firmwares and they work for me but I can’t guarantee that these are going to work for everyone.

There are only two firmwares this time to make things easier.

One that creates a new file every 50 minutes and overlays the footage with the Time & Date stamp and another that creates a new file every 20 mins but without the Time & Date stamp.

The stock firmware that came on my camera recorded in 20 minute segments with a Time & Date stamp.

Now, other firmwares may be available from other places (RCGroups Forums for example) but I’m only going to post these two here. Now, if you do somehow manage to knacker your camera up – you are on your own, so please take care.

Hi, very much appreciated your review and based on your info went ahead with the jumbo 808...again very happy with the results so far.

One thing that I would like to do is swap out the standard lipo battery. I am aware that I could use the USB port but Id prefer not to go this route as I feel it is cumbersome and and I would like to keep the port free for data transfer.

Being lets say 'less than technical' when it comes to electronics could you advise if this is possible and where I might find a compatible item.

I have read the various related threads for hacks etc on the RC group but it just serves to confuse me more and mostly based on USB options. I looked also on Maplin or RS sites but again with my lack of related knowledge the selection is confusing.

Hi and thanks a lot for your reviews! You're doing great job! And not in the least the boring one!
I also have a couple of questions and hopefully will get your answers.
1. Is it possible to conduct a comparative test of #11 Jumbo vs. #16 as well?
2. Do you happen to know where these 808 jobs have their IR cut-off filter and is there a way to remove it?

Thank you in anvance.

January 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEugene

@Eugene. Re the IR Cut off, sorry no clue. Re comparisons.....well in a couple of weeks I should have a 1080p Jumbo in to test. So I'll be able to do a 3 way comparison test between this, the 808 #11 & the #16. I've bought a brand new #16 recently too, so it should be a fair test. I think this time I'll try and make a shorter video though, if the operation of the camera is unchanged I can skip past this section and just refer people who need to know this back to the original review.

January 28, 2012 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

But please, if you ever damage any of your 808 cameras - just like in case with that 808 #11 when you tried to remove the time and date - would you try to disassemble its lense and spot this IR filter? Usually it's a small piece of glass with some coating that plays pink-blue in the light. But sometimes the IR-coating is applied directly to the lense itself, what makes the removal of IR-filter impossible, of course. I'd like you to find out everything about this filter as I plan to make a night vision camera of this 808 - although I'd definitely have to sacrifice the color in this case:(.

January 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEugene

If you want to know more technical information then I'd suggest heading over to the massive RCGroups forum thread about the 808 cameras. They are heavily into modding and pulling things apart so someone there will definitely be able to answer your questions about the IR filter.

I bought a jumbo off eletoponline but found it to run very hot. I emailed the seller about it and was told that it ran hot because of the work load, fair enough I thought but now it's flaking off bits of plastic where the two halves meet, two so far. Maybe the poor thing is trying to cool itself down by creating some breather holes. Cheers.

February 9, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterjack

@Jack All HD808#11 becomes warm/hot, not only the Jumbo, but the small camera as well. Nothing to worry about.

February 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRobert Logger

Thanks Robert, I have it mounted in the car and use its warm/hot feel to tell if it’s still going or not. The spontaneous vents are a bit of a concern though.

February 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterjack

Just a quick question please, could you please explain how you got the shots of what you were shooting, I mean like the camera angle when holding it. Cause if I shoot low I get faces with the 808# 11. Please help I want subjects in frame. Still waiting for my Jumbo. You should get a commission based on the units you sell. Thanks in advance bitingle1@gmail. And rest asure your videos are not boring!! I watched everyone of them. Love your reviews, you sold me.

February 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBrian

At this moment I've some problems with the V3 version of the 808 Jumbo. When I charge with the supplied cable, the camera dies :-( I've contact with the seller, but be warned, don't use the car charger( it charges with 250mA)

Hi, my name is James, I am researching mini DV camcorders for a project involving miniature sets and wondered if there are any good quality miniature cams out there with AUTO FOCUS?!! I suspect that they are all fixed focus up to 2 feet but thought it would be worth asking. I have a jungle set that I'm making as part of a live action/animated puppet film and wanted to use the camera to film scenes WITHIN the set rather than just viewing it from one angle. I have been looking at the 808 Jumbo HD key camera ( I've been thro Muvi, Veho, and other cheaper imitations to my cost, luckily only £10 ) and it certainly appears that this is the quality I need but the focus issue is very important as I need a narrower depth of field when shooting on a small scale. Any info would be gratefully recieved. Incidentally, good work, I like your reviews and the party popper!!!

Pls. try to record in total darkness in a room since I am interested in night time quality and is it possible to add a IR to this? ( of course with a soldering iron).
You should do a night testing too on every camera

just received my unit but when i press the power button then shutter button, it continues to blink. also, when i plug in the data cable to my macbook running mac os 10.7.4, it does not detect the unit. is this defective or do i have to buy a memory card for the unit in order for it to work? thanks!

July 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRyan

@Ryan....What is it that you want to do when attaching it to your computer without a memory card in it?

July 23, 2012 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

For a quick demonstration of its ability in total darkness, just close your eyes...... It will be like that.....but more grainy. None of these small cameras are any good in low light.

July 23, 2012 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

1) Hey, is this firmware mod for only #11? I have #3 and #14. What can I do to it? Is there any file? or same files?
2) When I record videos with the camera and transfer the files to pc (through card reader), empty the memory(16gb class4) card, then for the next use I always need to format my card(pc also says that the card needs format), or else the camera wont accept the card. happens everytime. What might be wrong?
Thank you see you.

August 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSuperK

The firmware is only for #11. You may want to try emptying the trash on your computer before ejecting the card...just something to try.

Have a Jumbo 808 and instructions got launderd after 1st outing.Have checked all over on the web, watched your videos and need to know how to format micro SD card. Do you know of a source to get instructions whch include hoe to format? Thanks

September 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMikeP

To format the MicroSD card, take it out of the camera, put it into a card reader. If you are on windows, right-click on the drive letter that corresponds to the card and select Format and Choose FAT32.

Hi friends.. My 808 HQ30 camera doesn't work. I bought this camera on aliexpress from BESTDVR store. I have contacted the seller for solution but no reply yet. Meanwhile I try to find ways to fix it.

The battery are fully charged. When I push (hold 3 seconds) the start button, the green light stays on and after that there is no respond to both of the buttons. It doesn't go to recording option/selection when I push the start button and also not start recording when I push the shutter button. I have pressed the reset button and change the memory card but the same problem still occurs.

If anyone knows how to fix it please be shared here and I really appreciate it.
