What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

A Car DVR with a wired rear camera

My Car DVR reviews seem to be quite popular, so I thought it was time to do another one. It takes something a bit different to get my attention with so many similar car cams available. This model does have the interesting feature of an additional wired rearview camera. The fact that the camera is compact and pretty cheap also counts in its favour.

I hijack the beginning of the video review to explain why it’s really not possible for me to answer the (hundreds) of email requests I receive asking me to recommend a specific ‘best’ car camera. This will also apply in relation to the similar requests I often get regarding action cams.

I really can’t tell people what camera to buy, any more than a car magazine would try and tell you what car you should drive. These reviews are produced only to help people to formulate a decision based upon their own very specific personal requirements. Please also bear in mind that everything I test is only used for a short period of time, I have no idea about the long term reliability of any of the products I review.

Overall though, this seems to me like a pretty decent camera for the price, despite one or two relatively minor niggles. I paid approximately £50 for mine from this seller on eBay who despatched from the UK. If you want an up-to-date list of auctions, you can click This Link which will perform a search on eBay UK for you.

Some of the other eBay sellers stock a grey coloured model and some also come with a different style of adjustable rear camera.

I have also found it for sale on DX.COM where it seems to be supplied with an additional suction cup mount

As always there seem to be a few variations of this camera around - so take a close look at any example screenshots shown in any adverts. The menus in mine appear as a bar along the bottom of the screen.  Here's an example of one where the OSD looks completely different, and I have no idea how this one performs (It also comes without the rear camera).

Sorry Adi for the typo and in calling you Ali, I said I was an "Oldie" and maybe all this has me confused.
Still waiting for her to complete her suggest stock check. Yawn!!!

January 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSnow

i don't think wiring a camera to a wrong input jack will harm it, the jack doesn't output any electricity that can harm something.

that's OK, if you prefer Ali thats fine with me :)

in a general note, most important configuration are:
1. RT 1min 3min 5min OFF = set this to any value, but not OFF
2. Auto record OFF, ON, Charge Video = set to Charge Video
3. Shut Down time 1min 3min 5min OFF = for testing set this to OFF so screen won't go off
4. Set video quality to 720

if you have done all off the above and still have issues its a firmware or hardware related. these Chinese cameras don't have good quality control and some can be defective.
i think if something is not working for you it is better to get a replacement. you can ask the seller to give you the firmware version and send you front and back video footage to make sure everything is working.

Thanks for the responses I got for my questions.

I have one more question. When I plug the camera into the car mains the red light in the middle is usually lit. Then, after a while it stops being lit, is this because the battery is now fully? Will the battery now slowly drain even though it is connected to a power supply or should this middle red light remain lit always when it is connected to a power supply?

Also, why when it reaches the end of the capacity does it say 'Disk Full' and stop recording, how do I set it to go to the start and start overwriting from the first file onwards? Or is this not possible?

January 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJohnK

Hi JohnK,
regarding the 'Disk Full' error, there's an answer for you a few posts up by me and DervMan.
the middle red led will stop blinking when the battery is fully charged, as long it is connected to the power supply the battery will not drain, you don't have to worry about it.

I've just received my car cam from ebay seller sue_winner. It all seems to be working fine apart from an issue with the DVR not automatically connecting to my laptop via USB. When I plugged it in to my laptop, the screen with the three options comes up. I selected the top USB option and the screen changes to diagram of a USB plug. However, nothing comes up in 'My Computer'. I've found a fix for this though - after I connected the USB lead and the device powers up, unplug the USB lead, then select USB, and then plug the USB back in. It then detected it straight away. My firmware version is F20_20121217 - hope this helps someone else.

Thanks for your help, I have had a reply from the supplier as follows:

We have a test my stock in the past one day,and we find that:
1)Yes,our new stock comes with the version:20121217;

***( Adi, If you recall mine was 201212211)***

2) And we find that its rearview camera can rotate 270degree,if you place its rearview stand upside,you can find its rearview with the same correct direction as front camera;
If you place its rearview upside down,you can find its rearview with the revered image revesed;

So,we wonder if you can just this installation direction, and rotate its rearview camera backward, and then have a try again!

Anyway,no worry about it,if it can not be solved by this way,we will offer this replacement for you,ok?
And we send you one new item, you help us to ship the old camera back,ok?

I tried her suggestion about turning the rear camera upside down, (with scepticism) and my doubt was confirmed, good image if I stood on my head, but I am beyond Yoga.

Soooo I'll take up the offer of a replacement, with some concern, seeing that other than the rear camera view the unit functions well.

I wish the world had a few more Adi's and things would be easier

February 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSnow

Hi Snow,
You're making me blush :)
if you are going to get a replacement i think is is better to ask the seller to verify this issues before he ships the item. ask him to check the firmware version on the item, and also verify there is no issue with the rear camera.

February 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAdi

I've uploaded a couple of videos to youtube recorded on this camera. It shows what the date and time box look like with the newer firmware. It's now much clearer than in Techmoan's original review.

February 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMattD

Seeking for a cheap but reasonable dual cam car dvr, I ended up with few choices. This cam seemed the best and your review looked promising. I ordered it from cg_online_wholesale on ebay for 42 euros. It shipped here to Netherlands within 2 weeks. It's black, has a rotateable rearview cam and the f20_20121217 firmware. Just installed it and it seems good. No mirrored image or anything, you need to check orientation before sticking it down. No charging issues, internal battery seems OK, be sure to use 1500mA minimum charger. Going to hardwire the adapter to a switched 12v lead to make it fully integrated. (using cable clips and and a 12v socket so i dont have to butcher the powersupply.)
The image is clear, license plates are readable from approx 7 meter distance on the front cam. Rear cam is quite poor. Sound is good. This cam has great stealthy design and can't be beeaten in its pricerange. If you want the best image quality, shell out some more cash for a 1080p cam.

Had a replacement camera from HK sue_winner, only took seven weeks to send old one back and get replacement.... (I hope Damien posted above doesn't get a problem...) anyway replacement camera (old one had green noise bar problem) when connected back up the rear camera is not working, now I think I might have connected the rear cam to the AV out socket inadvertently for a few seconds but I'm not certain if this caused a problem or is it just the new camera not working.

Has anyone connected the rear camera to the AV out socket in error and not had a problem....? or had a problem, or is anyone willing to try it and see.... ? ;-)

February 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCharmin

I've mounted the unit on my motorbike, the vibration has now been sorted but this video was taken before the camera was properly mounted ;-)

Here's a sample video, the audio is awful but there's no way ot reduce the recording levels on the camera.

Thanks for your help I have had the following response from the supplier...

"Checked my stock in the past one day,and we find that:

Prepared to try anything I did as suggested and achieved as I expected ... Image moved from right hand side and came out ... UPSIDE DOWN!!!

Advised her of the result and now they are shipping a new unit and I must say she has been very helpful in this matter... but will wait to trial the new arrival pending return of my present one.

Will keep you upto date.

Thanks a lot!

I love these cameras but I am very disappointed with the long term reliability of these units. Another of mine has gone faulty this week and will not remained switched on with the rear camera plugged in. If I unplug it it will work fine, but if plugged in it reboots itself, does the switch on chime, switches straight off, reboots itself and just goes round in circles. So, out of the 4 of these that I have had 3 of them are faulty. The most recent camera I have which seems to have newer firmware and maybe a faster processor is the only one that still works fully.....touch wood!

February 8, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMattD

I have a 20_121217 FW version. I am using it inside my house as a security camera (both cams recoring)

It has been powered on for 4 weeks without a single power off. It has been recording 24/7. I stopped it twice to check the files etc and all was fine - getting about 3hrs on a 4gig card

I have it set to cycle over with 5min clips.

So far not a single problem - no hangs - no bad files - no reboots - just working as it should.

I am using an old PSU / charger for a fuji camera to power it 5v @1500mA

February 8, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermatt_uk 2

MattD ... Hi, I don't know if you read my couple of posts from last week but I've had similar problems. At the moment the replacement camera, the rear camera doesn't work, the new main camera apart from that is fine and came with much better firmware / software version, I have again contacted the HK supplier sue_winner but as expected again, no reply to my emails.

My question is do you still have these non working cameras or have they been returned for replacement ? and do you have an extra rear camera that perhaps we could come to some arrangement about that I could try, happy to organise postage, payment etc if you have. Trying another actual rear camera seems the only way I can find out if it is the main camera or rear camera itself.

February 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCharmin

I have sent them back and these are the replacements. I am actually running 2 of these at the moment, one in my car and one in the wife's. It doesnt matter which car the faulty one goes in, it wont work witht he rear cam attached so it's definitely something to do with the unit itself rather than the separate camera.

February 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMatt

Hi All,
i think i just yesterday noticed the rear camera issue with the inverted image. i noticed it while driving on the highway, i was looking at the camera's lcd screen and noticed that cars that bypass me from behind seems like they are bypassing me from the right when actually they are to my left, and vice versa.

i don't think its such a big issue, if there will be an accident, i just need the proof of someone hitting me from behind, i dont think the judge will care if the car came from the left or from the right.
my Firmware version is F20_20121217.

February 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAdi

To Adi

I thought together with my thanks for your help and advise that I should now let you know of the climax to the saga of the reverse image from the rear camera.

At the outset I must say that the folks in HK did a great job and in just a matter of days I had a complete box of new tricks, with a note say that I should try it out and when satisfied send back the delinquent product.

On arrival I checked the firmware number and it was the latest.

First I installed the new camera and the rear camera but I left the original lead to the old rear camera in place...

You guessed it the rear camera just didn't work so I unravelled the new lead and attached it to the new rear camera AND it functioned like a real one :-)

I figure from this that there were a combinations of problems:

(a) Firmware outdated.

(b) Rear camera possibly faulty

(c) Faulty wiring mis-match to the rear camera lead.

Now all that is needed is for some one to spend time and re-write their instruction manual especially the area concerning just how to enter the settings area for things like adjusting a simple matter like time and date settings to mention a few.

BUT thanks again to you and all the others for the input to this site, and thanks to Matt for putting it up.

February 13, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSnow

Snow I have had a similar problem with fitting a new main camera but with an old rear camera, the rear camera now does not work.

I'm assuming the rear camera you originally had worked ok although the image was reversed, fitting the new main camera the original rear camera no longer worked...?

Are there any visible differences between the two rear cameras, the old and the new one... ?

When my camera was replaced I only returned the main camera assuming the rear one would be fine, it seems perhaps with the later firmware cameras (which my new one is) it needs the correct type rear camera as well, of course the replaced camera only came back without a new rear camera.

What I have found out is that there are two types of rear camera if you order them seperatly, standard and mirror image....

Any thoughts..?

February 14, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCharmin

Hi, in regard to the front and rear cameras.

(a) With the original kit supplied the front camera worked perfectly but the rear camera recorded an image that showed that I was driving on the opposite side of the road.

(b) When I contacted the supplier their suggestion was to turn the rear camera upside down... Thank goodness they didn't suggest that I turn the car over to compensate, but as a good lad I did as I was told and now I had an upside down image... Wonder of wonders.

(c) I advised the supplier that their suggestion was ineffective and that I had notice in checking the firmware that mine was well out of date. Their response was very good and the forwarded me a new kit asking me to try it out.

(d) When it arrived I didn't install the new unit but connected the new rear camera by disconnecting the old one and plugged it into the cord as supplied with the earlier unit..NO PICTURE AT ALL !!!

(e) This then suggested to me that I run the lead supplied with the new camera and fit the new rear camera to it... PERFECT RESULT !!!

In a nutshell I suspect that the cable supplied with the original camera was incorrectly wired by way of crossover in its assembly.

I can understand your frustration but I think you should ask for a complete new unit to be sent to you, holding onto, as my supplier told me to, the old one until I was convinced the new unit met with my satisfaction.... If they agree don't try as I did to cross match old with new, just go for the new one straight out of the box.

Your question on rear camera design. Some display a butterfly fitting much like in Tech Moans early You Tube, but each of the ones delivered to me were drum shaped and on a rotating spigot... which is the way it should go really, who wants to bend up metal brackets ?

I can only hope your supplier if as keen to assist as mine was and demonstrate good faith.

Good Luck!

February 14, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSnow

If you go back through the comments to 13th November I reported having problems with the rear camera showing a mirror image. At the time I owned 2 of these cameras, one in each of the family cars. Only 1 rear cam displayed the mirror image regardless of which DVR was plugged in at the time meaning the issue was probably the rear camera or the cable.

I must also report that I have fixed my problem I had this week with the DVR not working at all with the rear camera plugged in by simply formatting the memory card using the option in the DVR. Now working perfectly again!

February 14, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMattD

Snow, MattD.

Rear cam still not working... Interesting stuff though, I've tried the re-format SD card and I've now managed to get another similar rear camera and try it, still not working.

"sue-winner" from Hong Kong on eBay where I got the camera from will not respond to emails and when I returned the original camera they only responded once they had their grubby hands on the returned camera. Several new emails sent and no response yet again... so if anything from all this, don't purchase anything from here.
eBay not particulary helpful as 90 days have come and gone so will have to use credit card company to try and get a refund.

February 17, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCharmin

Sorry to hear your dilemma if you are interested the following web site is the organisation from which I obtained my camera, and they have been very helpful (with just a little prodding)...

I noted though in my negotiations that I had to deal through a person named Vicky who was really helpful.

Wish you luck, its a shame that these are the problems that confront us in assessing which seller to use but they forget that the internet becomes both their shop front and a huge billboard for the ones providing poor products and service. :-(

February 17, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSnow

Hi All,
when purchasing from eBay open a case before 45 days, after 45 days the seller wouldn't care less about your refund. when im expecting a an item or returning an item (which doesn't happen regularly) i always open a case at eBay after im alerting the seller about this (and giving him the option of a refund or a dispute) and im keeping the case open until i receive the item or the seller receive the refunded item

China has been shut for the last couple of weeks for their New Year, so there would be no one replying to business emails over this period. Things will start to return to normal this week....but I would imagine that they'll have a backlog of things to get though.

February 18, 2013 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Do you have to point the remote control DIRECTLY to the camera? or it just works fine if you use it from your pocket for example....

February 18, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSurmano

Surmano - It's an IR remote, so needs line of sight - but check the other comments first, this camera model has been rather unreliable.

February 18, 2013 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

I have bought this dashcam after seeing your review. Please can you guide me how to play front and rear recordings, same as you did in your review.

February 25, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnas

Hi Anas,
i think that Techmoan received in the package a CD with editing software. if you didn't receive such a CD, you can use any video editing software that support PIP (picture in picture). for example, im using a software called Wondershare video editor, here is a sample:

February 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAdi

Hi All,

I just installed my cam. It works like in the information video. I used first a class 4 memory card, but that is too slow. I swiched to the class 10 card, now the video quality is fine. One thing is bad, that the camera microphone collects noise of the wind and trough the vibration of the car. An also I can hear an electrical noise, I guess through the power wire. I already installed a filter on it hope so will be better.
But for this price it worths.Thank's for the help to Techmoan!
