What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

UK & US LINKS & PRICES BELOW

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

SPECIAL DASHCAM CARDS

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for dashcams...here's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

Liquid Image Ego Review - Part 2

Here is the final part of my exhaustive (and exhausting) two-part review of the Liquid Image Ego camera. (Part 1 here)

The quality of the video this camera produces is excellent, but the accompanying Actionconnect app and the manner in which it interacts with the camera needs a lot of work.

Luckily this camera can be used perfectly well for most of the time without any need to resort to the application. I found that once I'd used the wifi viewfinder to correctly line up the camera mount on my motorbike - I didn't need to use the app  again, until it came time to adjust the FOV setting.

Unfortunately due to the fiddly nature of this procedure, rebooting the camera and connecting it up to my phone by the side of the road took long enough that a helpful biker stopped and asked me if I needed assistance. He had seen me crouching beside my machine a few minutes earlier when he rode past in the other direction and assumed that I needed help. This experience taught me two things, firstly that bikers are generally very helpful people, and secondly that I really shouldn't try adjusting the settings on the Ego if I'm in a hurry.

Price - When I bought mine from Expansys on Amazon, it was £120. Now that Expansys are out of stock, the cheapest price from other stockists is over £150, which in my opinion is too high. I'd suggest waiting for prices to drop back down a bit.

SAMPLES

If you want to download some samples - I've uploaded a folder containing 1080p30 and 720p60 videos together with some stills. These will look considerably better than the youtube clips. Click Here to download these files

If you read through the comments you'll see that a couple of people have been having issues with the camera shutting off recording after 30 mins...rather than carrying on making more 30 min files. The solution appears to be a combination of using a different firmware from the one supplied on the camera and also possibly sticking to cards under 32GB in size. It's possible that some 32GB cards may work...but it's something you'll need to experiment with.

UPDATE Jan 2013 The Action Connect app has been replaced with a really good Liquid Image App and the firmware has been tweaked a number of times and now has options to turn off the light and flip the image (amongst other improvements). See the Comments for more.

This is a really excellent camera for a brilliant price.

(£102 for the Blue one on Amazon UK - at the time of writing (18/1/13).

Another update.

I got a reply from Kenny last night stating that there should be a link to older firmware for people stuck on 2.x to upgrade to before upgrading to a new firmware. He said it'll be 'on the website' (which I'm assuming is welkin) Sunday night (US time).

I'll once again update with any info I have about the update.

Update Mon 18 Mar 13,
EGO firmware issue,

Mr. John Noonan LIC's tech support ship the replacement from USA to me in Thailand. Today I received the fresh one in a complete packaging. It come with 3.3.1.0 and fully compatible with the latest Action Connect and Liquid Image App on iOS. He ask me to ship just the camera alone to the tech department in HongKong for analysing and try to solve the problem. They are very nice and always try their best to support. I wish my returning unit can lead them to the solution of fixing this issue.

Kelvin

Is there a software for laptop that allows the use of our camera?

Hi, I'm yet another user that started out on 2.2.1.2 and moved to 2.2.1.0 to get longer than 30 minute videos. Like all the other posters, I'm stuck there now. Let us know if there are any breakthroughs.

@SimonF:

I had a reply from Kenny @ Welkin who sent over a couple of firmwares for me to try on my camera (which is at 2.1.4.0). It didn't work for mine and I need to send him a reply about it but you're welcome to try the files he sent.

for me the weltin global limited solution workes fine!

March 29, 2013 | Unregistered Commentervince

Hello Vince,

Thank you for the good news with great detail. So your Ego originally was 2.2.1.2 that have 30mins video shut down issue, and now you change to 2.2.2.2 then 3.3.1.0, right? My 2.2.1.2 then 2.2.1.0 and stuck (freeze "UP" when trying to update to any) was sent to LIC HongKong office just before your reply. So I couldn't try if your solution can solve my case or not. Hope that it can fix all cases and LIC announce to their customers. Because so far this techmoan site is the only place that I can find the real Ego users discuss and share about Ego information.

VIDEO SIZE, TIME LIMIT, BATTERY LIFE

In case anyone's interested, yesterday I did a test of the Ego, running 3.3.1.0 software. I had fully charged the Ego the day before that, put it on my motorcycle, left it running, and went for a ride. With a stop for lunch in the middle, here's what happened:

SIZE (GB) / MINUTES:SECONDS

2.6 / 28:58
1.6 / 18:59
[Ego turned off, stopped for lunch, Ego turned on]
2.3 / 28:58
2.5 / 28:59
0.1 / 00:40
[Ego turned off, stopped for petrol, Ego turned on]
0.2 / 02:02

...at which point the battery ran out of charge, and the recording stopped.

So, the VIDEOS TOTALED c. 9.2 GB (the thumbnail total was c. 0.3 GB) and the BATTERY LIFE was 1 hour, 48 minutes, 36 seconds.

And you'll notice that the videos stopped and started anew, without human intervention, after each 30-minute chunk. This seems reasonable enough to me, because working with 2+GB videos -- editing them, uploading them, etc. -- will, IMHO, tax most PCs and servers.

Incidentally, the videos came out very nice, except when the road was very bumpy during speeds of greater than, say, 60MPH.

I have version 2.1.4.0, I installed version 2.2.2.2 and 3.3.1.0
Thereafter, I had a lot of problems, the image is choppy 60 fps.
I went back to version 2.2.2.2 and 3.2.1.0 and everything seems back to normal.
Can you give me the proper handling to update to version 3.3.1.0?

Good day! I followed the directions. Please try to upgrade to 2222 but UP is lit on the screen continuously. I tried to use several different MemoryCards, but updates do not work. What to do?

April 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKorvett

Hi. I just bought a Liquid Image Ego today with firmware 2.1.4.0 and now have problem updating firmware. I have followed the instructions on Weltins page, but no luck. I come to the Point were the camera says UP in the display and then nothing more happens. I have tried using both version 2.2.2.2 and later, same problem... Does anyone have this problem now? I am greatful for any advise on this. Thanks.

July 6, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDaniel

The problem with the inability to upgrade solved!! I contacted tech support and they sent me a patch. 2 files in the archive, and instructions. After applying the patch, I am asking for 2222 and then to 3310. Everything works fine!

I am getting really frustrated with this camera. I tried the patch above and had no problem getting the files on and restart the camera. The patch was installed and it powered off after about one minute. Then connected it to the computer again and the display only showed 000, nothing more and the camera never shows up on the computer. Had to do a reset on the camera to restart it. Now it gets 000, battery and 720 in the display, but still not visible on the computer and it won't respond to any buttons pressed. Only thing I can do is reset it again. Does not matter if I start it with or without the memory card. I will try to put the firmware directly on the memorycard now and upgrade to see if that works...

July 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDaniel

No, I am really stuck now. I cannot get it to start normally and I cannot connect it to the computer. Is there any way to do a firmware reset or factory reset on it? I would really need some help here. I have to return it to where I bought it if I can't get it running again. Thanks in advance!

July 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDaniel

Hmm. That sucks, Daniel.
Did you try upgrading to 2.2.2.2 from there?
The files suggested by Korvett are way too small to be a full firmware. I think the instructions were suggesting that those files were only going to get you to a stage which would allow you to update the firmware properly afterwards.

It would appear that the patch is from;

July 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSimonF

Thanks Simon for your reply. I did try to put the 2.2.2.2 firmware directly on the memory card and then put it in the camera, but no change. I can't get it in to UP mode as I was able to before installing the patch.

What I did not mention is that there is a constant blue light on the camera as well when it's started. The light next to the lens. I will try to Contact John if he does not reply here. Thanks again for yoru reply.

July 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDaniel

I got an e-mail from John today with the same fix I tried earlier. I have just sent him an e-mail back about the problem after trying the fix. I will let you know how it goes when I get any response.

July 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDaniel

I had emailed John about the fix after seeing Korvett's post, and he sent me the same files. (I checked, they are the exact same (md5sum) as the dropbox link above.)

For me, an Ego that was originally on 2.2.1.2, then downgraded to 2.2.1.0, the patch worked perfectly. I upgraded to 2.2.2.2 then to 3.3.1.0.

Make sure you follow the instructions closely. You need to turn the ego on normally, not hold both buttons like you are trying to upgrade the firmware. I don't know what doing that would do, don't really want to find out.

July 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSimonF

I also got the same files, no difference. I followed instructions and Everything also worked fine until it was time to connect the camera to the computer again and remove the files. I guess something Went wrong during the installation? It took about one minute Before it powered off, was yours as fast? I only powered it on using on/off button, never pressed both of them when I added the "fix". Could have been my version on the camera maybe...

One thing I come to think about is that when I tried to upgrade my camera the very first time I used the version 3.3.1.0 directly instead of 2.2.2.2 and something did actually happened then because I could see some other options in the app Action Connect for a short while, but then they dissapeard. One option was the 0 - 180 degrees I beleive. But after a restart of the camera and app it was gone again and it promted about the old firmware as it did from the beginning.

I am waiting for John to answer. I hope he have some more ideas and a way to factory reset it. Otherwise I have to return it and have it fixed or replaced.

July 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDaniel

Hey. Yeah, it was pretty quick, about a minute. That doesn't really help with telling whether it worked or not.
I don't think there is anything I can do to help. Good luck.
