What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

HD Car DVR Rear-view Mirror Camera

Integrating a dashcam into a rear-view mirror is a very sensible idea but it also comes with some unexpected issues, and these unfortunately mean that this particular camera is not suitable for me.

This isn't a bad camera though and may actually be exactly what some people are looking for. It's simple to use, forgoes the complications of G-Sensors and GPS but incorporates the essential car DVR features such as looping video and auto-start/stop (providing your 12V socket powers down when the engine does).

Perhaps the best feature about this camera though is it's price. When I bought mine I paid just £36 including delivery. Unfortunately if you are in the UK, then you'll find that this isn't suitable for your car (watch the video to see the reasons why). For readers in other countries (who greatly outnumber my UK viewers) the current price at the time of writing is $60 USD, $57 AUD, or €45

You can CLICK HERE if you want to buy one (this is where I bought mine). Note that this camera seems to be named the X888B.

P.S. If you really want to download some files taken with this camera I've uploaded some here, two have been converted into MP4s (so I could edit them) and one is untouched - but if I were you I wouldn't bother because the youtube video is a very accurate representation of the video quality produced by this camera.

I have received a Ebay message from the seller(Mastation365) of my Rearview Mirror Dash Cam after only about 10 minutes!
The message was:

"Very sorry for all, seems something wrong with the item, would you mind return the package, we would like to make a replacement or refund to you, please check our address:"

Good response time.
Of course it will take time for it to get back to China.

I had to send the Rearview Mirror Dash Cam back to China fro repair, replacement, or a refund.
USPS was $37.00 US Dollars from California.
The box and packaging materials was $12.00 (new box so it could be insured.)

So the Rearview Mirror Dash Cam cost $52.00
But to send it back to China cost $49.00

Think hard about that.

Hi Techmoan,

I have a similar Car Rearview Mirror Camera. The brand seems to be 'Chronovski', although I can't really find it on the Internet save for a few reviews.

Anyway, it's been working fine for 2 weeks but now I can't get it to work because it simply displays "Please Insert MicroSD Card" on start-up, even though the MicroSD card is properly inserted.

I've not made any changes to the settings and the MicroSD card is working just fine when connected to my computer.

Would you have any idea what's wrong with it?

I purchased the product from a petrol station and it didn't come with any manufacturer's warranty unfortunately, so I'm unable to go to the manufacturer to troubleshoot.

The card is a Kingston microSDHC Card – Class 4.

Appreciate if you could help!

I have this camera which I have bought on ebay as 2.7" TFT HD 720P Car Dash DVR Camera Cam Video Recorder Rear View Mirror and I put a 32 GB Class 10 card into it. I was very happy that it has an "eye socket" which makes it possible to offset the angle of the mirror, so that the lens would be in line with the car's long axis. The picture quality is excellent (I set the resolution to 1280 x 720). Unfortunately, while I set the cycle to 5 minutes, it never provided such a duration. It kept generating very short files (the shortest one was just 1 sec long) and the average was around 2 minutes long. I then set it to continuous recording. The result was that the shortest recording increased to 17 sec. the average length was around 3 minutes while the longest ever, 9 minutes. The time gap between particular recordings looked to me like random and it varied between 4 and 15 sec, which does NOT make me happy as a lot can happen on the road in 15 seconds. Sadly, after some 3 weeks, the camera, while being reliably plugged into the lighter socket and with the plug's control light being "on" without any interruptions, began switching itself off and this deteriorated in two days to such degree that it now switches itself off every 2-3 minutes or so. I find it infuriating as switching it on requires fumbling with the tiny buttons on the bottom edge, which is very distracting while driving. Would anyone have any idea, what this is caused by and can it be fixed? I did some searching and it looks that it is an issue not unheard of.

Regarding Ed's problem - try formatting the card. It should start working again.

January 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterScotfan

I wrote a long post and it was confirmed as gone through but it disappeared while the issue is of vital importance to me, bearing in mind that I had a nasty crash on the M25 (for the LHD drivers, it's the London ring road), where I was unable to prove I was cut in on by another driver who escaped among the commotion. I have bought afterwards, for £30, a very similar RHD camera, fixed to the mirror with straps. It can be found on ebay as 2.7" TFT HD 720P Car Dash DVR Camera Cam Video Recorder Rear View Mirror. I use with it a 32 GB C10 card, as recommended and provided by the seller (the camera refused to work with my own 8 GB C6 card). The quality of the images is excellent. Unfortunately, however, when I set the cycle to 5 minutes, I have never obtained a recording of that duration. The shortest lasted just 1 second, the average duration was around 2 minutes. When I set it for continuous recording, I obtained files lasting from 17 sec to 9 minutes, on the average around 3 minutes and the gap between them lasted from 4 to 15 sec, which made me rather unhappy, because a lot can happen on the road in 15 seconds. After some 3 weeks, the camera began switching itself off, despite being firmly plugged in and the plug's control light not signalling any interruption in power supply. In 2 days, this deteriorated to such degree that it switches itself off every 2-3 minutes, which drives me mad, because I find fumbling with these small buttons on the bottom edge very distracting. I would appreciate very much an advice as to the possible cause of this malfuction and can it be fixed other than sending it back to China.

January 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterScotfan

This is my third attempt to submit my problem, a very vital to me. I have a similar camera, fixed to the mirror with straps. It's described on ebay as "2.7" TFT HD 720P Car Dash DVR Camera Cam Video Recorder Rear View Mirror". When set to a 5-minute cycle, it has never provided that duration of recording, the shortest lasted just 1 second and 2 minutes on the average. When I set it to continuous recording, the shortest one lasted 17 sec, the longest around 9 minutes but the average was still quite low, around 3 minutes and the gaps lasted from 4 to 14 seconds, which is unacceptably long, as a lot can happen on the road in 4 seconds, not to mention 15 (I watch the recordings in Irfanview or in VCL). After some 3 weeks, the camera began switching itself off at random. it does this now every 2-3 minutes or so. The card is 32 GB C10. Please advise, can this be fixed?

January 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterScotfan

To start with, I would like to apologise for submitting my post in triplicate, I was genuinely confused by the lag with which it appeared on the webside, nNever again! In the meantime, I have found some answers to my questions. When I took the camera out of the car, plugged the card into my computer and revieved the camera's settings, it turned out that I switched the cycle recording off and the card has been full. It saw also that the camera had been generating empty folders somewhat randomly. I have now formatted the card and set the recording cycle to 5 minutes. I'm highly interested whether it would, indeed, generate recordings of that duration.
I would like also to thank Techmoan for the "Beginners Guide", which I saw before returning to this website. I should have watched it before I began experimenting by trial and mostly error.

I think these rear view mirror cams are best option for least viewable device from outside of cars.
I hope matt @ Techmoan might review the ABEO HDVR-180A because t is designed for RHD cars and he only reviews new different equipment, which this is for uk cars and more portable

Cant you turn the thing upside down and rotate the little screen so it works for British Cars??????????

May 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMike Hunt

what about batteries, anything with battry back up like this?

June 1, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMike Hunt

If your Review Mirror Dash Cam just quits and will not turn on hare is how to fix it.
(Not in the book.)

Look at the back of the camera.
In the very center bottom of the back, is a very small hole just big enough for a paper clip.
Push a paper clip in until it touches and press down for a couple seconds. You will hear the speaker squak and the camera
will start working again.

Sometime the camera will just shut off like this and I think it has happened when I forgot and left it on..
My 12 v socket does not go on and off with the ignition. It is on all the time.

June 1, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLucky

Did you try mounting it upside down?
Have viewed many of your reviews. Not at all bad.
Cam on looking for the best sports cam at lowest cost if that is out there. Viewed some of your reviews.

Hi I am from Singapore and have been using a similar product from chronovski in my car. No major issue so far except I can't set the camera to switch recoding from the rear view to front view. (I bought a dual cam version)

For those who experienced "auto off" issues could it be the settings ? You may also want to check if the red recording light continues to blink while it was "turn off"? It is actually a safety function to allow full view of the rear view mirror.

Lastly, the product can be quite sensitive to the speed/class and brand of the micro sd cards. You may want to try with different class and brands.

Take a look at DOD RX7W rearview mirror cam.

It seems that it has better resolution and has anti-reflection mirror.

Perhaps you could make a review of this model.

Hi I am from Singapore and my rear view mirror car cam is from Chronovski. I bought it from a store in Takashimaya for $199 , which is a lot more than the 60 used you stated. Works fine. But I feel sore having to fork out so much for a unit bought from Takashimaya when I can get one at 60 used. Mine is a single lense unit.

If the camera just stops working for no apparent reason and will not work.
Here is how you fix it.

On the back side at the bottom middle you will see a small hole just big enough for a paper clip.
Just push a paper clip in the hole and press it down lightly and hold for about 3 seconds. Your camera will start working again.

This is very valuable information.

Hi Anthony, (from Singapore)

I rarely shop at retail stores nowadays. If I find something that I fancy at the stores, my first instinct is to whip out my iPad and Google it on online stores. If I can find it online, chances are it will be 20-40% cheaper. Even online shopping nowadays require comparison as some sites have prices that are 10-20% different. Be a smart consumer !

August 10, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAlan

@Alan – I agree on the advantages of online shopping, but it would be nice to be able to try out if it even fits..

frisk2k wrote this camera looks like a ABEO HDVR-150 knockoff. I watched some footage of both and the ABEO looks worse, so if it's a knock-off, it's more value for your money.

November 21, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLeon Buijs

Hi Anthony, good to be able to handle the product before buying. Can check out at retail stores and search for it online. I rely a lot on reviews by previous buyers and they are pretty accurate so far. For those without reviews, they are usually cheaper and more affordable products that I don't mind trying out . Cheers

Got the 180 unit only 3 weeks ago got one fitted in another car no problems
This unit cuts the dab radio reception out when you plug it in the 12 v socket
So must interfere with areal reception
What can be done

Hi techmoan,

thanks for your info on this and other devices, however I actually need an lhd version for my vette.

The model shown is no longer available from what I can tell.

I have been searching in the usual places, but so far have had not much luck.

Can you help?
