What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

SVC200 is the best £100 action camera I've found (So far).

***UPDATE - Now available for £25****

I think I've come out ahead in the great ebay crap-shoot this year. In amongst the usual dross, I've picked up some excellent cameras, the Mobius, SJ1000, Mini 0801 and I now can add the TCL SVC200 to that prestigious list.

This is the best action camera I've found in the £100 price bracket,UPDATE - now £25! and I don't believe I've tested another action camera at any price that can outperform it when it comes to video quality, and that's mostly down to the SVC200's unusually high 18Mbps data rate.

My full review is below - and below the embedded video you'll find the downloadable clips and buying links.

I've uploaded some clips to PCloud. You can access those here: SAMPLE CLIPS

I, along with many other people on this forum, have just experienced the "only 9 min. of recording" issue present with the svc200. Everyone here has posted where to get the updates for the firmware, but I must be stupid, because I have no idea how to do anything with what I downloaded! No one has given any directions on how to install or update anything. I have a brand new MacBook Pro, so that's not the issue. Would someone PLEASE, either write it here or send me, give an itemized "how to" for updating the firmware for MAC? Straight from plugging in usb cords and when to turn on what, to what should be happening on screens. I'm about ready to toss this thing, and tcl is no help because everything is in Chinese!

Copy the file to the memory card. Put the card in the device and power it on. Follow any on screen instructions. Once the firmware is updated delete the file from the card. Hope that helps! Don't throw it, you may break it :)

Thanks Gaz Hunter for the tip. I - after seeing the file needed to be decompressed, and downloading the appropriate app - did what you mentioned. I actually decompressed it, copied the decompressed file onto my desktop (just in case I need it later), put my micro usb card in my laptop, copied it to there as the only file on the card, reinserted the card into the camera, and everything loaded up fine. It took all of about 1-2 minutes to install. I tested it last night and recorded to the 13 minute mark with no stoppage from the camera. I'll be going out later today with the camera to give it a true test.

Is not the best but by the price work fine.
I have tlc svc 200 for my first action-cam and I really happy with it. but I just have found 2 problem with it:
1. I buy a external microphone adapter that bend something in side the female plug and the camera won't go back to the internal microphone, lucky me, I repair it with a needel.
2. The waterproof case fall and break the yellow lock mechanism .
Someone knows where I can buy only the lock mechanism or buy the waterproof case?
not the camera.
Thanks to all.

So I went out on the motorcycle today, and was able to record 3 videos - one 17 mins,, one 18 mins., and one just over 10 mins. Quality is good! But, more importantly at this point, no stoppage with the filming! Thanks Gaz Hunter!

You are welcome! Glad to help:)

@Jose newvillage
I lost the yellow retaining ring of the waterproof case (WARNING it's not glued on) and tried everywhere to get a replacement waterproof case (or ring) at a reasonable cost.
Eventually the dealer where I purchased it from in the UK, JooVuu, sent me a spare case from a returned product.
Apparently TCL are not planning to make any more action cameras and so this isn't a priority item. Joovuu no longer stock it.
Like all the other "Waterproof" Cases for Action Cameras I have used (SJ, TCL, Drift) , the metals parts used in the hinges and catches of the waterproof covers are not made of marine grade stainless steel. So they soon start to corrode if you're using them in seawater, despite rinsing with fresh water after use. You are advised to try some silicon grease to protect them.

Here are the other contacts I tried:
The camera is made by TCL Digital Technologies
I tried phoning their service telephone line but since the person answering only spoke Chinese that didn't help.
You can try the feedback form on this page
TCL has operations in more than 80 cities across Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe, North America and South America. It has 18 R&D centers, 20 major manufacturing facilities and over 40 sales offices worldwide. See
The only response I received from TCL was from TCL Australia (where I am based) who told me that as they hadn't imported it they couldn't help. Your own local TCL branch office may be more helpful.
Here are the email addresses I tried (writing in English with a Chinese translation from Google Translate)<>;<>;<>;<>;
- Coleman (USA) who also sold the camera as the Coleman Conquest wanted $40 for the replacement case.;
- Aliexpress Customer Service (no response)
- Amazon
Product Q&A - no responses to my question about a replacement waterproof cover

Hope this helps

For anyone experiencing the 'invalid file' error, try using a Class 6 SD card.

I had this issue after buying the camera for £25 on Amazon and tried firmware updates which only made things worse! I then remember reading on Techmoan about Class 6 and Class 10 cards. Had a look and my card was a 32GB class 10. I put in an 8GB Class 6, and for the past two days, it has been working fine without any issues, although I might upgrade to a 16GB.

On a side note, this is the recording time available on the two cards I have:

32GB - 291mins (4hrs 51min)
8GB - 70 mins (1hr 10min)

16GB - ~145mins (2hr 25mins)

I only use mine in case of an accident so don't want it recording too much in case I inadvertently incriminate myself!

Any idea where buy mounts for camera

August 10, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSteve

To be honest I use GoPro mounts. Any of the mounts with a camera mount thread works fine.

August 10, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterGaz Hunter

I bought one of these cameras a few months ago for £25 and have been very happy with it. Unfortunately I tried to flash it to the newer 1.0.2 firmware and now it just boots to a black screen, and seems to have no camera input. I then flashed it to the 0.8.7 version available on TCL's site and while I can now get my files off it through the USB connection it is still essentially bricked, as a few people have found.

Does anyone have any other firmware versions? Can anyone rip the original firmware off their camera? I'd love to give instructions how to do it but can't for the life of me figure out how to use DirectUSB, it never finds the camera. I have contacted TCL through their feedback form but no response yet after a few days.. Does anyone have the Coleman firmware? I have even tried the Russian Ginzzu version but it's just the same - black screen, freezes completely if I press the menu button. It can be found here if anyone wants a look, it is different to the other two as the file size is much smaller:

Please help, someone! Is the 1.0.2 firmware on the Chinese site the same as all the others, too? I can't figure out how to download it..

SVC200 Firmware Upgrade Instruction:
1, check the firmware version: 9 ignore this shit ; really vague method that doesn't matter cause you'll overwrite anyways)

2, copy the firmware file to TF root folder; (TF means your SD card)
3, insert the TF to SVC200 and power on;
4, choose YES in the firmware upgrade screen and press OK button

5, the screen will display PROCESSING when upgrading;
6, SVC200 will power off automatically after firmware upgraded.
7, delete the BIN firmware file in the TF (
8, enjoy!

email me if you need any help , I got this through trawling through countless forums etc , I have 2 sv200's and theis has fixed at least one if not both of them
###BRICK WARNING! DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK ## I took the gamble and it worked for me you might not be so lucky!!

I have noticed that this camera only sells with the go pro bracket and no accessories now. . My one from Amazon came in a smaller box and no other bits other than camera , water proof case , leads and battery . Does anyone know where I can get the accessories for the SVC200 ? otherwise I will return it . such a pity as I had seen some other Amazon links to the camera and noticed they came with all the accessories but it now says unavailable So I unwittingly ended up buying the one with no bits. I wonder if it is a copy as it does not have the logos on the box or on the camera

Check it works ok an then I'd suggest just buying one of these Action Camera attachment kits

October 7, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterFunkster

i recently born this camera but i am having a problem where it will record for 9 minutes then crash and stop recording. shame because it is such a nice camera.can anyone help with this

October 8, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterharvey

I had the same problem of the camera only recording for 11-11 mins & seconds used the firmware update from the Chinese site update and it works great. Thanks so much to Ritche I used this and it fixed everything. Here is the v1.0.2 firmware.. Its very difficult to find so maybe somebody wants to upload it somewhere secure Password = 1t5r site is in Chinese but pretty simple to follow.

My camera was bricked as I couldn't access any menu or record or take photo. this fixed everything for me,
All in all this is a great little camera, just needs updating to this firmware

And 0.8.7 here

I have a fault with my SVC 200 where after i finish recording it endlessly shows the spinning icon indicating it is processing the film then keeps doing this until i open the battery compartment or do a force power off.
does anyone know of a place i can try a firmware update . so disappointed as this camera seemed perfect .

I have google firmware for SVC 200 and nothing so far but i bet there is a method somewhere

December 29, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRoss

There seems to be two kinds of SVC200, the earlier ones that came with all the accessories which have the serial that starts with SVC200ST and the later ones that came with just the GoPro mount which have the serial SVC200XT. The SVC200 firmware updates seem to be for the ST version only. If you have an XT then try the SVC300 firmware off TCL's site (rename it to SVC200SD.bin), this brought my XT back to life. Sadly I didn't bother to test it in any other way because I got greedy and flashed the SVC400 firmware straight after, this bricked my camera good and proper. Don't do that.

Please can someone try this and report back. You've got nothing to lose! I can only imagine the XTs are actually rebadged SVC300s, this may explain how they managed to cut the price so low.

Superb post.. Thanks for sharing.. Video review is interesting.. Does this camera have a internal storage. ?

March 21, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterDigitalCameraHQstore

Hi, The SVC200 camera does't have internal storage (can only record to removable micro SD storage cards).

The SVC200 camera I have works great and records incredibly clear and smooth videos even when trail riding on my dirtbike (my SVC200 seems to have video recording stablization built in). I have done the firmware upgrade of which help improve recording in the low light conditions with my camera. The only minor problem I have with my SVC200 camera is that it will only record continuously for 70 minutes and then everything recorded after that time says the rest of the files are invalid (also sometimes the camera screen will say that the storage card is a non-optimal card for some reason). I'm currently using a class 10 32Gb card (and have tried a class 4 card and it also works the same way). I am planning on trying a class 6 16Gb card soon to see if that will make my SVC200 keep recording valid file videos until the battery runs out (on my camera the battery power lasts for about 2 hours 10 minutes of recording time). Other than that minor issue my SVC200 camera really works great. I was really hoping that maybe TCL company would start making and selling them again.

Below is an Update (to my post just above) on what worked to fix the Invalid files issue on my TCL SVC200 video camera.

Over the past year I have tried various sizes of micro-SD cards (including three 32GB micro-SD cards that are class 10 cards; two of the cards are unknown eBay generic types and one card is a Samsung EVO 32GB SDHC card) and my SVC200 camera still would only record about 60 minutes of videos and then all recordings after that time would simply display as invalid files.
The invalid files issue was naturally a little frustrating due to the fact that the stock battery that came with my TCL SVC200 camera has the power to run my SVC200 camera for over 2+ hours when recording a nonstop video.
The Invalid files issue also made it a little inconvenient since I always had to try to keep track of the recording time and change out the micro-SD card just before reaching the 60 minute recording limit, otherwise no videos would be recorded after that time.
Also a while back I had installed the newest software update on to my SVC200 camera, but the Invalid file issue still occurred.

The Invalid files issue that I had mention in my post above has now been fixed by using a SanDisk 16GB Ultra Plus microSDHC UHS-1 Card (a Class 10 card with speed up to 80 MB/s 533x). My SVC200 camera now records and saves 100 percent all recorded videos onto the camera’s file system until the battery power runs out. (The stock 1050 Mah battery runs my camera about 2hrs. 10 minutes when doing nonstop video recordings). The SanDisk card also has eliminated the occasional false recording such as when the camera is turned on for recording a video and no video gets saved to the camera’s files on the micro-SD card.
The SanDisk 16GB Ultra Plus card works great in my SVC200 camera and provides 144 minutes of video record time with it set on the highest quality HD video settings (my camera is set on Sports mode using the NTSC setting (30 fps) 1080p HD setting and the highest bit rate setting). Also since the SanDisk card is making my SVC200 camera work perfectly now, I went and bought another SanDisk 16GB Ultra Plus microSDHC UHS-1 Card (Class 10 card, with 80 MB/s 533x) and have found that both SanDisk cards work the same, they work perfectly and the Invalid files issue no longer occurs.
(If only the SVC200 camera had come from the factory supplied with a factory recommended card to begin with).

Now about batteries for the SVC200. I have bought and tried a couple different higher capacity BL-5C batteries (including a 2450 Mah high capacity gold battery), but so far none of the batteries I bought will run my SVC200 camera no where near the 2+ hrs that the original stock TCL battery can do. Currently I’m looking for a good low cost BL-5C battery that can at least equal the 2+ hour run time of the original TCL SVC200 battery.

//How to change the battery in waterproof remote control?//

Hi, Still happy with the SVC200 after almost 4 years ! However the remote control is not working anymore (I assume the battery is weak, the led on remote is dimmed). Anyone knows how to open the remote control and change the battery? As it is waterproof I prefer to find instructions - but a search on the net gave me nothing... Cheers, Laurent

There are screws underneath the label.

Shame they stop making these cameras.

Thank you Stavrich.
Yes in the meantime I've found the small screws behind the 4 small pads. There is a CR2025 coin battery inside.
