What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

SPECIAL DASHCAM CARDS

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for dashcams...here's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

SVC200 is the best £100 action camera I've found (So far).

***UPDATE - Now available for £25****

I think I've come out ahead in the great ebay crap-shoot this year. In amongst the usual dross, I've picked up some excellent cameras, the Mobius, SJ1000, Mini 0801 and I now can add the TCL SVC200 to that prestigious list.

This is the best action camera I've found in the £100 price bracket,UPDATE - now £25! and I don't believe I've tested another action camera at any price that can outperform it when it comes to video quality, and that's mostly down to the SVC200's unusually high 18Mbps data rate.

My full review is below - and below the embedded video you'll find the downloadable clips and buying links.

I've uploaded some clips to PCloud. You can access those here: SAMPLE CLIPS

Hi Matt,

Excellent site and I've really enjoyed watching a number of your action cam reviews. Regarding the SVC200, can you tell me if the unit is water-resistant when not in its case? I want a camera to use on my helmet/kit car and sound quality is important. Lots of the cameras you've reviewed seem a bit rubbish in this respect when in their cases, but the plug-in mic socket on the SVC200 appeals, even though it's only a 2.5mm. However, if the camera has no water resistance without its case, then perhaps I need to look elsewhere.

Look forward to your thoughts.

Kind regards,

Chris

Dear Techmoan, Im shocked that you would pick the svc200 video quality over the Mobius ??? I have downloaded sample clips for both and compared them vigoursly, especially at the indoor Arndale, both in 1080p, and after going back and forth on my Mac, and my 60" led tv via usb flash drive the mobius clearly has a brighter sharper better image, better lowlight recording and certainly better audio, to me it isnt even close ??? I usually agree with you but am mystified this time !!!

Hey guys, I've been trying out the camera and it's great!

However, I want to have a spare Helmet mount with the adhesive pads. Any idea where can I get them?
I looked for it in Ebay, and all they have is the ones with small base, not like the large base same as the
original from the box.

Thanks

Gary, back in November I picked this as the best £100 Action Camera I'd tested. If I had £100 to spend on an action camera then the SVC200 was the one I'd pick. It has a Mic-in and a waterproof case with tripod mount. Very suited for Moto Vlogging. The Mobius isn't really an action camera. It's an all purpose mini camera..but without any water resistance it's just not suitable for attaching to a Motorcycle helmet here in the UK. I know that Joovuu have designed a Mobius waterproof case that's due out next week which will make this a much more viable option. I too prefer the video quality of the Mobius to the SVC200 but there is a lot more to choosing a camera than just the video quality. If you have £50 to spend then it's much better getting a Mobius than half a SVC200.

Thanks for great reviews. This headcam seems to be what i want in terms of quality and ease of use, the latter being extremely well shown in your review and has given me great confidence to get one of these cameras, of which i have no personal experience, and your reviews are gold for someone like me.
My question is about the headmount. I fly model RC gliders on hills - slopesoaring it's called - and i would use the camera to shoot the model I'm flying etc. So, I need a headmount to fit on my head when wearing a baseball cap or similar, as opposed to a helmet.

Can it be done with this SVC200? Or must i go to the Sony AS15 with the headmount accessory ?

Thanks in anticipation

The mount shown at 1:50 into the video should get you about 90% of the way there to mounting it on your head...just a few straps and things and you should be sorted. Be prepared to experiment a bit though.

Hi, bought this camera the other day after seeing all your reviews, it's a great bit of kit and cost me £99.99 from Amazon, since gone up to £129.99.

just wondered if there is anywhere to update firmware in the future, do you have any ideas please?

Many thanks

Dave

Great review as always. Are there any action cams that you've reviewed that don't have terrible barrel distortion?
