What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

G1W - The cheapest Dash-Cam that’s worth buying.

When I recently tried to find a good cheap dash-cam, quite a few people suggested that I should take a look at the G1W camera, so I picked one up. Delivery from China took a while, but the wait was worth it. This camera is capable of recording good quality video day and night, better than many more expensive cameras, more than adequate for the majority of people and at a price that can’t be beaten.

To put it simply, if you have any intention at all of picking up a dash-cam but up until this point have been put-off by the price, then this is the camera for you. You will need to obtain your own MicroSD card – (Class 6 or 4, but not Class 10)  from a reputable retailer.

The following paragraph is only for people who are thinking about buying this as their first dash-cam and who may not realise what they are getting themselves into…

Do not buy this camera and expect to get superior levels of build quality and customer service. If you choose to have your camera sent from the Chinese ebay supplier I used, it will take some time to arrive (mine took over 3 weeks to the UK).  If you break the mounts you will not get spares. If it arrives DOA your best option might be to bin it, as the alternative would be to send it back to China. I have no idea how reliable this camera will prove to be over time – but like all electronic devices, it will not work forever. Dash-cams have to work for hours on end, often in extreme temperatures, the kind of thing that puts a strain on even the best made cameras. I have no connection with the manufacturer or retailers. I bought mine off ebay.

Now that’s said, if you do want to buy what I think is the best performing dash-cam currently available for £32/$55 – this is it and you can get one from one of the links below.

To: K1S; Using a comments section or a discussion forum to try to promote a commercial item is considered rude and a very unwelcome practice. If you are trying to build some brand identity this way, the identity being created is very going to be unfavorable.

Regarding my query about radio interference and Mat's reply: I bought a battery with USB outlets and it works fine with no radio interference. Thanks Mat!

Techmoan, I want to thank your excellent reviews of dash-cams in helping me decide which dash-cam best suits my needs.

I've been dithering for months but finally purchased the G1W through one of your eBay links. Wonderful little device, works flawlessly just as you described. Very much a fit-and-forget camera. Video quality is surprisingly good too and the camera I have generally copes with changing light levels rather well. It's not phased by oncoming headlights, setting sun etc Low light performance is equally impressive. Amazing what £30 can buy.

I like the many reviews you have done over the years and you make me laugh with your anecdotal comments.

That said i need to say you do get some stupid questions in relation to dash cams, it is like people do not think for themselves or stop just for a moment to evaluate what is in front of them as one person asked if the device even needs to be plugged in !.

Your reviews are honest and you are not connected to the product in any review and give a review as it is without the tinsel and hard sell

You are one of my main sources for products simply because your an honest bloke ( for anyone who does not have a northern accent a Bloke is a Man )

Keep up the good work as what you are doing cant be cheap to do as with everything they is a cost....

The blame game almost always follows any accident, with sometimes both parties claiming innocence. You rarely hear of any driver admitting that the accident resulted from an error on their part. A dash cam can provide real proof of what actually took place and who was at fault. Makes it easier to report irresponsible driving

There's a good reason for that. If you read your motor insurance booklet, in the section regarding what to do in the event of an incident, it states that you should never admit liability for the accident. There's a lot of legal stuff behind this - but it is a condition of everyone's policy never to admit blame.

my G1W was delivered in February 2014 (52 USD). Bought on ebay from estore009.
In January 2016 I have replaced the battery as camera was working only when plugged in. After that it worked well again.
But not so long...
Camera most probably died now in April 2016. Some days it works, other days not... Turning on/off, display is just white etc.

In November 2015 I bought another one to my other car - G1W-CB (from estore009 again). It works OK so far.
But I hate the fact, that the capacitator can not even keep the time/clock right after few days unplugged. I'm not keeping the camera in the car when I know I won't drive it next day.

Just bought via your linkG1W dash cam. Having some problems. Looked at your videos. Battery light on bottom right keeps flashing whether on usb cable or car charger cable. Does this mean it's not charging? Second problem: after 3 minutes on the road the screen goes blank and the top left red light seems to flash blue and pink. Cannot see what is on the road after 3 mins as screen is blank. We are going on holiday soon and I wanted to use this while driving so I am disappointed I can't work this camera. Please help me before hubby chucks it out of the window!!!

Dashcams don't really charge...they need a constant supply of electricity to power them. The screen is supposed to go blank so as not to detract you when driving. To see if it is working, try playing back some video it has recorded.

All my G1's are set to have the screen on constantly. It is in the settings of the camera. I do that because mine are hardwired and sometimes they don't come on...
