What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

G1W - The cheapest Dash-Cam that’s worth buying.

When I recently tried to find a good cheap dash-cam, quite a few people suggested that I should take a look at the G1W camera, so I picked one up. Delivery from China took a while, but the wait was worth it. This camera is capable of recording good quality video day and night, better than many more expensive cameras, more than adequate for the majority of people and at a price that can’t be beaten.

To put it simply, if you have any intention at all of picking up a dash-cam but up until this point have been put-off by the price, then this is the camera for you. You will need to obtain your own MicroSD card – (Class 6 or 4, but not Class 10)  from a reputable retailer.

The following paragraph is only for people who are thinking about buying this as their first dash-cam and who may not realise what they are getting themselves into…

Do not buy this camera and expect to get superior levels of build quality and customer service. If you choose to have your camera sent from the Chinese ebay supplier I used, it will take some time to arrive (mine took over 3 weeks to the UK).  If you break the mounts you will not get spares. If it arrives DOA your best option might be to bin it, as the alternative would be to send it back to China. I have no idea how reliable this camera will prove to be over time – but like all electronic devices, it will not work forever. Dash-cams have to work for hours on end, often in extreme temperatures, the kind of thing that puts a strain on even the best made cameras. I have no connection with the manufacturer or retailers. I bought mine off ebay.

Now that’s said, if you do want to buy what I think is the best performing dash-cam currently available for £32/$55 – this is it and you can get one from one of the links below.

I've just brought this camera and purchased a card for it. I had watched the video on here a couple of times before choosing this camera. Shame I forgot about the bit regarding the class 10 card. I will keep it for my phone and use the one in my phone in the camera. If that doesn't work still then I have another class 6 card coming. Will let you know how it all works in the end!

I bought a G1W DVR from Aliex. I used it with Samsung 32 GB10 Class microsd card. It worked very well for a week, but today I traveled some time, the DVR seemed to record, when I put the card my laptop it says "Can not render the file". I have tried it with different players but same result. File manager shows the file but does not read it. Any help...Thank you

Hi there.

Out of curiosity can this be hard wired into a car so it' auto turns on when the car is turned on and what is the maximum SD card size It can handle???

May 6, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSam

Yeah its an auto-on device you just leave it plugged into the cigarette charger and it comes on when you turn on the ignition you never have to go near it!

I would like to purchase one but is afraid to mount it on my car. Scared that someone will break into the car to steal it. My car is park outside my house and I would like to mount this in my house on the window sill instead. The distance between my car and window is about 15 feet. Does anyone know if the quality of the image and sound will be different?

Thank you.

After this compelling review, I bought one of these from the estore009 on ebay. The sound seems to be a fine level to me when I play back the videos, must be luck of the draw on the mainboard. However, the power plug that comes with this is very noisy (both audibly and in the power wave) and interferes with my radio reception. I am so glad that I installed this when I did because the very first day I had it installed, I got pulled over and the cop was making all sorts of false accusations about my driving. He really had it out for me because I am a volunteer firefighter and have emergency lights in my car. His lies got back to my fire chief and I had to use the video from this camera to save myself from undue disciplinary action. Protect yourself now! Get at least 2 for the front and back of your cars. It is worth the money.

Hi Mat,

Thanks for another very helpful review. I ordered the dashcam and as I was setting it up I got into the MENU option PLATE NUMBER and accidently entered some letters. For the life of me, I can't find a way to erase them or turn off the PLATE NUMBER option. I can write over the numbers and letters, but there doesn't seem to be a way to erase them, or turn them off.

I even tried pressing the RESET button for default settings and the erroneous plate numbers are still present. Do you have any ideas?

Hi Mat,

I'll express my thanks for this review. I bought one of these as a gadget (to replace a poor 720p unit) and for the price I'm amazed at the quality. On a recent trip to a certain public toll road in Germany (that has red and white striped kerbs), we did a comparison with the output from a £350 GoPro and it was identical (some said the G1W was better). On the way back from Germany, it recorded the five hour trip from the channel with space to spare on the 32Gb card.

Well done, keep up the reviews, I watch them all

does any one have a uk dealer of parts for this camera i need some spare mounts to mount this on the side windows.. currently standard mount broke:(

May 30, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterwhitepawz security

Is there a way in can make the camera save footage and stop it being overwritten when I'm driving ??

May 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLee

Hi Mat

I read a number of reviews on the G1W then bought from estore900. I thought I went for the model with the capacitor but would appear I was sent a battery one instead. Instructions talk of recharging the battery. Have been happy with the quality of the video but the battery will not hold a charge so camera has to have cord hanging down all of the time which is most annoying.

Would paying to have a battery change be worth the extra $$$$s.

I’ve been glued to this site since buying a rubbish DashCam back last year but having seen Techmoan’s review of the JR4000 I bought one and very good it was too until after a month the USB connector snapped off and fell inside the camera. Good news is buying from an Amazon fulfilled seller it was easy getting a refund.

This week I’m giving a G1W from E-Prance, Amazon fulfilled a go and it seems fine but I’ve only had it a couple of days so early days. One strange thing about this model as it’s a ‘in car camera’ is when I turn the car ignition on, the camera does not start recording but just throws up the menu to connect as a Mass Storage Device or a PC camera however in the instruction manual it has a note in pigeon English that says and I quote “Note : Due to start the vehicle, the current will suddenly increase, although the machine has the function of immediate start while the ignition is on, but cannot guarantee that the strong vehicle current will damage the DVR, we suggest you first start the vehicle, then link car charger, using manual boot mode” un-quote.

If I disconnect the power from the accessories socket and plug it in after the car was started it works fine but to me this is not how it’s supposed to work but I can live with it.

June 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterChrisK

It sounds as if a 'spike' or power surge is being delivered to the camera, rather odd. I bought mine from Amazon in January and it does just what it says on the box. It is always plugged into the cigarette lighter socket, which is 'live' with the ignition on. I literally do nothing. When I drive, it records, turn off the ignition and after a few seconds when the capacitor has discharged, it turns off. I never need to touch it, it is there for me, not me for it.

If you're looking for a good place to buy a G1W I bought mine from a seller called E-Prance on Aliexpress. Was delievered in two weeks, well packaged, all working ok, good quality vids. Here's a little unboxing:

Need Help!

I loved this camera purchased through Amazon by BLACK BOX, and also purchased Amazon's SanDisk Ultra 32GB MicroSDHC Class 10 UHS Memory Card Speed Up To 30MB/s With Adapter, - SDSDQU-032G-AFFP-A

Everything was working properly until I purchased this item below (dual socket) so that I could run my camera and run my cell charger at the same time. After a few hours of driving, the camera started to turn itself off and then turn on again only to turn off and continue this behavior on and on.

Listed below is the dual socket adapter which I think may have caused my problem.

100% Brand New high Quality.
New generic 2-Way Car Cigarette Lighter Socket Splitter + USB Port.
Color: Black
Net Weight: About 80g.
Simply plug into car's cigarette lighter socket.
Run multiple accessories at one time.
Has 2 USB port as well.
Double socket with 12V / 24V output.
LED charging indicator.
Suitable for Cellphone(iPhone3G 3S,4G,4S,5G...), GPS, Ipod and PDA etc.
Very convenient and easy to use.

A friend said that perhaps the adapter was not working properly and ran down the battery on the camera so I shut off the camera but kept it plugged into the car's cigarette lighter (not the new adapter). It seemed to help by allowing the camera to run longer. but after a bit, it started to turn itself off again, go on and immediately go off. Finally I unplugged it in frustration. I would appreciate any suggestions. Should I open it up and change the internal battery or is there a setting I should make on the camera. Seriously, it ran perfectly for two months. Also, this exact thing happened in both cars as I purchased two cameras and both class 10 cards at the same time and then 6 weeks later, I purchased both adapters for both cars and the camera stopped working within a few days of one another.

Almost certainly a poor connection in the dual unit. I get the same with TomTom from time to time. The old Cigar lighter fittings are not up to the job.

June 22, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAlan Greenwood

Having reported the problem I was having with auto start and stop with me also having a double socket USB connection. The socket is rated at 2A, 3 -5V however I tried today using a single socket standard one that came with my Tom-Tom satnav and the auto start and stop works with no problems at all so I’m looking out for a double with 1.5A output as I think this is where the trouble arises.

I have 2 G1W's and both are out of focus. I can't find any way to adjust them and wanted to know if anyone has had the same poblem and if so how did you get it solved?

June 27, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterUber Roadie

I contacted the seller on Amazon BAIKLOV and this is what he wrote regarding my issue of a dead battery. I am not sure what he means by hie means by the G-sensor, but I will look at the directions to see if I better understand. I did plug the camera into a wall USB and charged if for 4 hours.I changed my USB card to a Class 6. Now it is working as before, but I have not driven more than 8 miles to see if it stays on. So frustrated. NOTE: his English is understandable at best.

Hi, Friend,
Thanks for your mail
My friend, I am so sorry for the product issue,
there is no any problem for retuning.
but before that could you give us the chance to resolve for you?
Normally, there are some reasons as below to make the camera can not power on.
1, your memory card is not Compatible with our camera--- we can do the simple test, please take out the memory card, then check if it can be powered on or not. (Amazon recommended ScanDisk class 10 cards, please kindly be noted that the other buyers no only buy this camera but also this kind of memory card, as the seller, we suggest to use the low speed memory card like class 4 or 6...)
2, setting issue, please kindly be noted that it is better to set it as loop recording, and close the g-sensor.
3, the battery is dead
4, the camera is burned
---for 3 and 4, could you do the test as below:we do not suggest to use the car charger to charge the power, as for this way, the camera is not only charging but also depleting.
So please try to use the usb cable ( which included in the package), and find the suitable adapter to charge the camera, normally it takes 3~4 hours.
after this, the camera still can not be powered on, OK?
Looking forward to your comments.
Please do not worry, and be promised that we can offer the new and workable product exchanging or full amount refunding as you prefer to in case that the product issue can not be resolved, oK?
Thanks for your patience.
Best Regards,

Hi Crystal Wells,

The problem you’re having is very similar to mine and I’m sure the problem I have is the 2A output on the double USB sockets as when I use a single 1A USB socket the camera works just as it should. I have done a few searches for 1 to 1.5 A output double USB’s but they are few and far between and the ones I have found have been very expensive.

My original double was a 12 and 24 input jobbies so I bought another one yesterday that’s 12V only input but I still get the same results with the camera not starting unless I remove and reconnect the USB after the engine has started. I’ve also noted that a lot of the doubles are rated at 2A but it’s actually 1A per USB socket so in theory it should be the same as a single socket 1A and the 1A single USB’s one works for me.

It’s strange what your seller has said about using the car to recharge the battery in that the camera is charging and discharging at the same time. It’s odd that it should be a problem but I have noticed on mine that the time and date zero’s after a week of use and I assume this is because the battery has exhausted so maybe while it’s in use it takes so much of the available power (hard to believe with a 2A supply) that only a small amount is left to charge the battery so although the battery last a week or so when used with the cars power eventually it goes flat or as my camera is set at an interval of 5 minutes the camera runs on internal battery up to 5 minutes after the cars juice is turned off so maybe this is flatting the battery after a week or so of use.

I’m using a SanDisk 32GB class 10 card with mine as recommend here and I’ve had no problems with it with my only problem being the double USB sockets and the very slow rundown of the battery while using it in the car unless of course the time and date settings loss is due to something else.

I would be grateful if someone here is using a double USB socket with no problems and can give us a link to the model.

I recently bought a Griffin 12V> Dual USB (1Amp each - as per the specs) adaptor. TK Maxx had them on sale - but they seem to be pretty common.

June 28, 2014 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Chris K and Tech,

Well, for now I am going back to the car single socket. My friends and I received both cameras at the same time and both double sockets at the same time as well and within days, both cameras went out. I am going to do some driving today and I will see what happens. I hate to keep chasing my tail by purchasing one thing after another that does not work, but if either of you can think of a solution, I would be most appreciative.

Today I am going to hit the reset button and with a charged camera and a class 6 card, I am going to hit the road. I think that they will refund my money, but not sure if I have to send back first. I think the problem may be on my end but who knows. Might have just done something wrong to it when I changed the power option to dual. Otherwise, I never had any problems. Please keep me updated and I will as well.

Thank you both.

I purchased this 3 months ago of Ebay: 1080P HD CAR DVR Vehicle Video Camera Recorder Dash Cam G-sensor HDMI GS8000L108.

It's stopped working!!

I had the item hard wired by my local garage, if I buy the G1W, will that require hard wiring again?

Basically, I'm after another dash cam that I can just plug into the hard wiring that I've had fitted.

Apologies in advance, but I'm neither teckie, or mechanically minded.

June 29, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNovice

You should be able to unplug the USB cable from your broken camera and plug it in to the G1W. They both use a mini-USB power connector at standard USB power levels. Though you may want to make sure the wiring job is not the cause of your current camera failing.

Cheers for the rely, the dash cam menu buttons no longer work, also, the screen no longer shows the view, it's all megapixels, I'm sure it's the cam and not the wiring.

July 1, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNovice

Have had one of these for just over a month. Works great as a camera, if you can figure out the menu which is a little odd. Takes great quality video during the day (not tried at night). Unfortunately I can confirm like some others that this puts out a lot of electrical noise to the point I can't listen to some radio stations. Disappointing as it is actually a good little camera. I bought mine from EPrance via Amazon as "fulfilled by Amazon" and they have agreed to accept it as a return.

I've tried it in two cars one with a rear antenna and one with the antenna built into the windscreen. It didn't make much difference. Rerouting the wire didn't help either.

Please give firmware Version # and supplier of your dashcam.. This is wonderfully helpful comment board.

From estore009 got DVR027, G1W and just today G1W-C. No issues w 1st 2 after several months. G1W-C "set-up" easily but not yet installed, in S California.

G1W-C has Version 20131126.16. In older Chrysler Caravan using "lighter" accessory port, there is abt 40 sec delay when switch key to OFF. Thus power stays on and capacitor is maintaining full charge during that time [ relay provides the delay to "accessory" ports, radio, pwr windows etc.]. Then when 12V power clicks OFF, the red power LED on cam takes abt 10 sec to go OFF. This hopefully will avoid any capacitor stored-charge problem. This suggest to install a delay-relay in autos where is was not built-in,.if problem with last-file storage.

I have a question: What is latest version for the G1W? Fromestore007? Am I getting a too-old Version? estore009 had it on sale 1st week of July-only for abt $52, so I leaped for it like any fine woman would. But I'm a man so that leaves me excuseless.

The G1W included a helpful booklet in Chinglish instead of the earlier reverse-mangled Chinglish. If anyone needs a typed layout of the "set-up" procedure with its Menus and Modes let me know and I'll do it here. Can't guarantee exactness, but better than even the booklet. I don type 2 good n I tawt a "commputer" was a guy standin up holdin on to a subway-strap.

Hi, do you know whether the new G1WH sold by JOOVU ( is the same camera?

July 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMB

The G1W and G1W-C FIRMWARE settings tree has been elaborated at these liks [Part 1 and 2]:
These should clarify how to do the "settings" steps if the supplier's instructions are too confusing.

[Part 2]

I have been playing with my G1W (great Cam) since I purchased after viewing your review. And one thing I found is that after cracking open with my iPhone tool. I noticed it too had a lens that can be easily removed. This opening of the camera was inspired by your mobious Extension Kit installation. So I had purshased the Kit you had in your mobious link, as this to was a 24 wire ribbon cable. But much to my chagrin (as I thought it wouldn't, but tried anyways) it did not work. Now with your powers of having some manufactures change a few things for you I thought you might want to revisit the cheapest best dash cam and open it up and try this yourself and end with a disappointed (it wold be nice if this extension cable managed to do the same as for the mobious, type deally) or if you are aware of other Kits out there for this particular Cam. Bye the way in my experiments I had a 64G Class 10 lying around and installed it and it recognized and recorded and recorded on it and after it filling up I check the properties of the card it was full up to the 64G.
Any who just a thought.
Great reviews and I send them to many friends. Keep it up.
thanks muchly
