What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

SPECIAL DASHCAM CARDS

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for dashcams...here's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

Proview HD Action Camera from Chinavasion - Review

Here is my somewhat delayed video review of the ProView Camera from Chinavasion. This is advertised as an action camera - but can also be used as a car camera. This video had to cover a lot of ground because of the camera's extensive feature set.  The camera comes with most of the accessories that people will need - and also sports a convenient tripod hole which enables it to be used with many other mounts.

I'm always on the look out for the cheapest decent-quality action camera and this is definitely one worth considering. It's smaller and cheaper than Chinavasion's Crocolis and Xdreme cameras that I reviewed previously from Chinavasion.  If you like the look of the Proview and want to buy one then please CLICK HERE.

I mentioned in the video that the clips from the camera look a bit jerky in the review - they don't look jerky if you play back the original clips from the camera, and I'd recommend you DOWNLOAD MY ORIGINAL CLIPS FROM HERE. (Note most of these have been trimmed for length - but not re-coded in any way).

I am still searching for the elusive sub £50 water-resistant HD action camera with a microphone-in socket (this isn't a feature included on this camera). A lot of people like the idea of a helmet side-mountable camera with a microphone socket that can also survive a rain shower.  This is something I receive a lot of emails requests for, so I should re-iterate here that I haven't found a camera that fits these requirements yet….but when I do, I'll be sure to review it.

Apologies that my voiceover is a bit blown-out at times at the beginning of this video…I accidentally nudged some settings and thanks to everyone who sent me messages during my enforced absence and I'm sorry that I couldn't respond to them all. Hopefully I can get back to my usual irregular update schedule now.

IMPORTANT UPDATE - Contrary to what I mention in the video, the lens does rotate. This allows it to be twisted either 90º or 180º. The reason that this is important is because it means the camera can be mounted on the side of a helmet using the clip on the base and then the lens rotated at 90º. This also resolves the upside-down timestamp issue.

Good to see you back with a nice review of another not-quite-good-enough camera! ;-)

One thought, does the mounting clip that you show screws on the bottom of the waterproof case not also fit on the camera itself? Looks like it will and if it does you would avoid your misting up on the bike (albeit needing to be a dry day!)

I'd probably buy that if it were £40, in the meantime thanks for reviewing!

Hi Techmoan.
I think a lot of people would like to know what, in your opinion, is the best value waterproof action camera that you have reviewed so far. I know this seems like a daunting question, but I imagine that you get asked it quite a lot, and since your opinion is so highly valued, I'm sure we would all appreciate knowing what you think.
Thanks for your help,

Hi Techmoan.

Another great review as per usual and glad to have you back, was starting to get worried LOL.

You did mention the jerkiness of the sample clips in the review and it was noticeable at times on my PC, did D/L a couple of the original clips and sure enough they played fine. The price is fairly reasonable but think a little more finessing is needed before I'd consider purchasing, a removable/replaceable battery would have been a nice feature too.

Your efforts are much appreciated, thanks.

Ari,

The only one that I really like (that I've used) is the Sony Action Cam. Below that its all about compromises. I not prepared to make those compromises, but others may, which is why I can't say which is best. I thought the RD32II was a good simple camera, but the mounting system is useless. I'm still looking for something under £60 that I could recommend.

Techmoan,

Thanks very much for your suggestion, it is inevitably going to be difficult to find a product where low price and high quality go hand in hand, but I hope that as new cameras are developed at an ever increasing rate we might see a loosening in the market for these cameras - I would certainly hope so.

Thanks for your help,

Ari

Nice to see u back Matt

This would make a great covert camera for PI work as it has the look of a cell phone. I want to ask about sound, can the sound be disabled in rec mode? So it won't rec sound?

I just bought one of these plus suction mount. And I can't put the suction mount while waterproof case is on. is there any way to put the suction mount and the waterproof case at the same time?

Welcome Back Matt! Glad to see you doing what you do so well. We all love to read and see your reviews and have missed them. Look forward to your continued work. Can't wait for the next one. Regards, John

Hi, First of all, let me say that I really love your reviews. I discover your site because I'm a road cyclist in need for an action camera. Yesterday, I finally decided to get a Xdreme 1080p Action Camera but when I was clicking the "buy" button, I saw this ProView HD review ! So, now I'm confused... Which camera you prefer ? Which is the best one to film long bicycle rides, in your opinion ? Thank you very much !

Hey Matt,

great review, as usual. And good to have you back.

One thing I've always been wondering is, do you actually use a camera in the car to record your driving? I don't get the impression that you do. If not, why not?

Georg

I don't use one regularly. Just when I'm testing one. I'm still looking for the perfect camera for me.

May 4, 2013 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Hello, and thank you for all these reviews.

Whenever I try to download any of your clips from dumptruck, a password is required. I also tried registering, but without success. I cannot figure out what to do. Any suggestions?

Christos.

May 9, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterChristos Manassis

Christos,

I don't know why that is - no one else has reported any problems and plenty of people have downloaded the clips.

Another great review. I noticed that the videos have a magenta cast, giving you that weird purple sky. Is that a white balance issue or did you somehow mangle the color during the encoding process? Thanks again for a comprehensive review.

May 11, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNorman

I think its more to do with the IR filter on the lens. I noticed a tendency to turn black to purple as well..which is an indicator that the IR filter is not perfect.

Hi, I've recently purchased this camera and I'd like to know if I can use it as a webcam. When I connect it to the PC, a screen appears in the camera display showing a USB logo and I can't do nothing with the camera.
Is it normal?
Thx Techmoan

May 28, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterfel

I never use a webcam, but I I did there's one built into my laptop. Does the manual mention that this camera will function as one? I don't remember seeing anything.

May 28, 2013 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Hi, I think it's impossible to use it as a webcam. By the way, which is the difference between 4g and 8g in Gsensor settings? Did you notice that if you record a video with the gsensor activated the recording stops at one minute more or less an the begins to record again?

June 5, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterfel

I haven't done any testing with the G-sensor so I can't answer. I dislike G-sensors.

June 5, 2013 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Thx Techmoan, but what is G-sensor exactly for?

June 5, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterfel

Have a look at my Beginners Guide To Car Cameras video where this feature is explained in detail.

June 5, 2013 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Hello Techmoan,
I ordered the Action camera HD after I saw your Review.
I got it today and after trying a few recordings I found, that all recordings with the camera hanging upside down from a
windscreen Mount where upside down.
I tried various different settings, -no change.
When I watch the small Screen of the camera during a recording it works fine, the Scenes are allways in the correct positions,
no matter what the angle of the camera is. The very same recording shown on the Computer is upside down.
Do you have any idea what the cause of this might be?
I would be very gratefull if you could answer to my email.
Regards; Peter

Did you change the setting to inverted in the menus?

June 12, 2013 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Hi Peter
did you notice this?
IMPORTANT UPDATE - Contrary to what I mention in the video, the lens does rotate. This allows it to be twisted either 90º or 180º. The reason that this is important is because it means the camera can be mounted on the side of a helmet using the clip on the base and then the lens rotated at 90º. This also resolves the upside-down timestamp issue.
Hope it helps...

Hi,

I stumbled upon your review and this product looks like a good value for money, given that I don't need an external microphone.
I understand it lacks a helmet mount, but it has a tripod hole and I belive I could build a mount myself.

You did not mention the battery life. How long can you record at 1080p with a fully charged battery pack?

Thanks
Giamma.

August 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGiamma

Great review as always.

Quick question as someone already mentioned - how can you attach unverisal mounts such as suction cups when the waterproof case is attached? Also it seems the handlebar mount can only be fitted without the case. Is this correct? Doesn't seem they have thought this through.

Anyway to modify the screw base of the waterproof case to attach a universal screw mount? Thanks. Chris

Hi
Which one is the best car dash board camera please?
Thank You

Great review. Do you plan to review the newer model - the ProView HD II ? I just bought one from Amaz0n but would like your opinion of it too.

December 28, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMatt

I don't plan on looking at the ProView II, this video wasn't all that popular...I never made back the cost of the camera.

December 28, 2013 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

I noticed that the Proview HD had a much clearer and sharper video than the Xdreme HD
Even though the Proview doesn't have a pull out battery I like it better,,when I get one it
wont go on a helmet or car,,it'll be a carry around camera and for close ups on a monpol
it should be very sharp,,seeing the lenses are some what close to the same a new lesser
wide would make a great time laps,,the narrower Xreme HD lens they put it should fit the Proview,,
don't like fisheye,

Chas
