What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

The Mobius Camera - The do-it-all mount-anywhere 1080p Micro Cam

Here's my review of the Mobius Camera. This camera has been in development for some time and clearly the manufacturer has listened to user feedback from the buyers of the #16 808 cameras and incorporated many of their requested features into this model.

There isn't too much to add here - this is a pretty comprehensive video that covers most features of the camera. I suppose the only thing I didn't go into was the webcam function. I'm not interested in this myself since all my laptops have had a built in webcam since 2009, but a webcam function can come in useful if you need to refocus the lens and view live video on your PC screen at the same time. As I mentioned at the beginning of the video the manufacturer included a tool to enable you to refocus the (unglued) lens. I know of people who use the keyring cameras mounted on their model trains who will find this very useful.

I also never tried the time-lapse function, which automatically takes photos at your specified interval. You can see these options on screen during the configuration section of the review.

The only negatives I can think of are the narrow FOV in the 720p60 mode (720p30 has the same FOV as 1080p30) and a lack of water resistance, although there may well be accessories released in the future that address the latter issue.

Due to the constant revisions the manufacturer makes to the camera, the features I have shown here could be updated in the future, but even if there are no more changes, I'm very happy wth the camera as it stands today. It never gave me a moment of trouble during the weeks I was testing it. Never once locking up or shutting down on it's own, so for me this has been a totally reliable little camera.

I'm trying to guess what crazy questions I'll get asked, so I can answer them first.

Motion detection? - Latest Firmware has this option (Info added Jan 2014)

Looped/Recycled Video? YES

Can this be switched off? YES

What is looped/recycled video? - See My Beginners Guide To Car Cams Video HERE

Can the Timestamp be turned off? YES

Finally to answer a common question from people who didn't watch the video. - No the silver arrows on the camera are not buttons, they are a heat sink and being aluminium are also not magnetic. Press Play on the video to learn more.

If you have any more questions, you should get all the answers you need from the links below.

The Mobius is 6cm front to back, 3.5cm wide and 1.7cm thick.

@Rami. I have no plans, I don't thing there is enough in it to warrant a review. It's a Mobius with a wider angle lens, I think that's all anyone would need to know about it to determine if its suitable for them.

September 17, 2013 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

@Techmoan, since they are (apparently) going to be selling the lens separately for a whole $13 you could do a 'How to change the lens' video? ;-)

September 17, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVoyager03

That might be an idea...

I'm impressed with the camera and review however I'm not with the seller. To get a base camera kit let alone what you call a deluxe kit, once you add in all the pieces and shipping for every single part, you might as well get a GoPro.

There should be a base camera kit which includes the camera, the slide on mount, the usb cable, one mount, the tv cable. At one price. It's currently sold by " typical" ebay seller tactics. Which is a total turn off imo.
Which halts me in my tracks from buying. Especially since I wanted more than one. Several in fact. ..

Put together a base and deluxe package I'd take the next step and purchase. If shipping is actual not a pumped up price.....

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterchsse

@chsse, I bought the basic camera wich comes with the basic mount, USB cable (and mine came with the TV cable too!) along with a couple of mounts from Eletoponline they didn't charge for postage and it arrives in the UK pretty quickly from China.

It was MUCH cheaper than a Gopro.

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVoyager03

@chsse: I didn't buy my Mobius from ebay, so I can't tell you how they're represented there. I got mine from a retailer in NYC called Spy Tec,and their site made it clear what came with the standard kit and what was optional. I have the camera, two mounts, a USB cable, and the car adapter. The cost for all of this was roughly $120. I've never seen a Go Pro anywhere near that price, and frankly, I think it really depends upon what you're buying this kind of camera for. Honestly a comparison between the Go Pro and the Mobius is irrelevant, unless you're planning to use it as a sport cam mounted on a helmet or handlebars. The Go Pro has a water resistant plastic enclosure, the Mobius does not. The Mobius is fine in fair weather if used this way, but I think it isn't water friendly if subjected to rain or snow. I bought mine for strict usage as a car camera, so water resistance isn't important for my application. The picture quality of the Mobius is pretty much incomparable, thus the statement that it's "The best discreet camera for $85. Great video quality, size and support." which was related by TonyM earlier is, in fact, quite accurate.

Where/how do you give feedback to the manufacturers of the mobius? Asking as I've got a feature I'd love to see implemented, similar in a way to your requested extra LED on the back, that pretty much no actioncams have, that would make this an easy choice for me.

Feature I'd like is for people that use it as a helmet cam. I skydive, and to be ready to jump out the plane, I want to have my helmet on ready to go generally a few minutes before I jump. Currently, to KNOW that it is recording and I've pressed the button correctly, I have to start it before I put the helmet on, then I've got 2 mins or more of footage before the actual jump. What I'd like is to be able to just start it recording, but with some external visual indicator to know that it is recording. For my Sony CX cameras, there are things like CamEye II and HypEye, which include visual LED indicators. But no actioncam has them. So if there was a way for a future model to have an optional external LED via a removable cable, that would be one colour on recording another on standby, that would be amazing. I wouldn't have to take the helmet off to know that I've started/stopped the recordings.

Great review.

I found it much easier to edit/save the .bin firmware file directly in BBEdit on the Mac, rather than jumping thru all the hoops necessary just to see a bunch o'buttons in the Windows-only configuration utility. A bit more straightforward, too. For example, "Sound Recorder" button in the Windows utility disables camera altogether when turned on; in the actual firmware it is listed as "voicemode" which makes more sense.

The 808 #18 cam I bought has two .bin files available, one = AVI and the other produces .MOV files. Either may be edited in BBEdit and uploaded to camera card directly with no problems.

@ Voyager03 and Will - thanks for the response. I did find Electoponline after posting and saw as you stated they add no shipping like the other Ebay seller. Is he the "official" seller / Manufacturer I wonder?

I'll look into Spy Tec as well.

I really hate when something is sold in pieces from the get go. I'm not saying I would not like the ability to buy parts if needed but prefer a "kit" to get me started.

I learned a lesson buying a KK2 board... Nothing mentioned you needed a cable to hook it to the comp or to be able to update firmware that had to be bought separately. You have to have the cable! Went back to order it , pay additional shipping and wait another few weeks to find out... they are out it. Back ordered for months. So... the KK2 is useless till I get a cable that imo should have been included with not sold separately unless you need additional ones.

GoPro's are around 2 bills for the white ones and used 2's Silver or Black are cheap enough.

I do like the promise the review showed me.

A water proof case I can make easy enough. That was the first thought I had was how to make the water proof . lol

Eletoponline365 is the manufacturer & seller of the Mobius.

September 25, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterruss331

Might be of interest to a few people.

I've made an adhesive mount for the Mobius (or any other tripod mounted camera) using cheap and readily available GoPro parts off ebay.

Ignore the screw, I don't have any GoPro style screws.

Video of the Mobius mounted to the bumper of my car with the adhesive mounts.

I would go so far as to say that the GoPro adhesive mounts (or at least the generic ones) are disposable since they're so cheap.

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnthony

looks good. did you make or buy the 1/4 screw mount that slots in to the go pro mounting system?
regards john

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterjohngr

I bought this mount here from ebay

I originally bought the standard tripod female GoPro part that I was going to put a 1/4 screw into to convert it, then a week later that one popped up on ebay which is basically what I was going to make and it is much smaller that what I would've ended up making and is the exact part for the job.

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnthony

thanks anthony i was looking for one of these. it should make for some good mointing options.
you video looks very steady with this mount.

September 29, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterjohngr

Hi Matt.
Excellent reviews.
I was wondering if this möbius can be set so that it records in the correct orientation when it is mounted "on edge". I'm thinking along the lines of sticking it to the side of the helmet, not the top, for mountain biking, where it could get hit by branches etc. the contour does this but has a fair bit of bulk that results in the helmet being pulled down on the side it is mounted on.
If not this, then I am erring on the liquid image ego as I have a chest mount harness that I got cheap with a veho muvi.
Your thoughts would be welcomed.

Does the Mobius have enough frame rate ? when watching the movies on youtube when camera is recording moving items , people / cars etc I see shocking images ( low frame rate or memery card can not hold the speed?? )

Can you explain this ?

I do like the action cams , searching for a camera for RC planes.

October 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterArjan

By the time you see a clip on youtube it's been re-encoded three times. Download a sample to see the real quality of the original clips which have no frame-rate issues.

Hi mate! thanks to this review and previous in depth ones about the cams.I have bought 4 so far and am very happy with the video quality and the auto power switch on.Fantastic value for the price.
I use el cheapo knock off gopro mounts for the car.
Boy don't the heat sink buttons get hot! lol

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterScotty

Hi, I was thinking about getting this to mount on the side of a helmet rather than the top. Anyone tried it? I guess the aspect is off as it looks like you can only rotate the lens 180 degrees and not 90?

October 6, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterstu

@stu - Have a look at the helmet mount.

Just a bit curios what are the corresponding megapixel count of the mobius and sj 1000, I might have missed the specs in he blog and videos thanks. Great reviews as always thinking on which to buy

I went to your link "sample clips" for the Mobius camera and the files listed are from 2007, so I don't think those are correct for this recent camera.

P.S: Dose this come with "H.264 MPEG-4/AVC"?

Thank You

This review seriously has to be one of the finest most in-depth reviews I have ever come across... My Mobius should arrive in 2 days and I plan on using it for FPV but I'm searching for a wiring harness or a schematic to wire my own so as to be able to tie the Mobius and my Video Tx together.. My Cam didn't come with a cable... Lots to read and review of this super little Cam...

Again thanks you for all the effort which went into making this superb review...
