What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

ACMAXX X-CAP Auto Lens Cap

I don't want all my video reviews to be epics that take weeks to make and almost as long to with that in mind here is a very quick video about a lens cap.

CLICK HERE to buy the ACMAXX X-CAP via ebay.

I'm not convinced that I've made the right decision in buying the G6, although only time will tell. My shopping list of features for my new camera restricted the choice down to just a few models. Most importantly I wanted a Mic-in socket,  a fully articulated touch screen with touch-to-focus and a separate video record button (not just a mode on the dial). I like to be able to quickly alternate between taking photos and videos. It also needed to have MP4 or MOV recording, good low light and continuous focussing during video recording. The G6 offered all these features, but there are a couple of things that I've learnt since buying it that are making me unsure whether it's the right camera for me.

Firstly, I should have realised that a camera like this cannot do macro photography like my other cameras - it needs an adaptor lens (now on order). With the stock lens my demonstrations of things like the buttons on a keyring camera would be too far away. The focussing seems a bit odd - it seems to do a lot of hunting, but I still have to play with the settings for this, so maybe I can find a mode that works better. It cannot be powered and record at the same time out of the box without an expensive adaptor (which is difficult to obtain). I'm currently awaiting this from Germany. I also still have to experiment with my new condenser lavalier to see how well it performs with the camera.

So the jury is out on my G6, it looks great, but it might not be completely suited for my studio requirements. On the other hand the lens cap is a definite I suppose that's something.

Hi sir!

Love your site and your reviews! Regarding the camera: if you decide to return the G6, check out the GH3 instead. It should be able to do everything you require (although it may not come with a lens kit in your area). Granted, its not the smallest camera, but you will have Panny's top of the line, with every option you will ever need. You wanting something a lil cheaper, check out the previous model, the GH2. One small issue with the GH2 though is that the mic jack is 2.5mm; however, you can purchase a cheap adapter (2.5 to 3.5) and it's all good.

On topic: thanks for the lens cap demo & review. I'll definitely have to check that out

What ever camera you get there are *always* times when you wished you'd not got 'abc' model but 'xyz'. However had you got that one then there would have been times when you'd wished you had bought.... and so it goes on.

Anyway, the best camera is always the model that comes out just after you've bought yours.

I'm looking forward to when the Lumix ZS series finally has a mic-in port.
I love my new Lumix DMC-ZS30 (pocket "super zoom") It has an automatic lens cap though as most smaller cams do.

I would get a nice G6 but it's just too big to lug around on vacations.
