What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

Recommended Cameras

"What is the best car or action camera?" is a question that I get asked every few days. The truth is that I really have no idea. I've only really tested a handful of models and many of these were pretty poor. Statistically I've probably only looked at a fraction of a percent of the models available on the market today. In the time it took to me type this paragraph, another ten new cameras have probably been listed on Alibaba.

Therefore I've done the next best thing - I've compiled a list of all the cameras I've tested that I think are still worth a closer look. I've put this list on a new page called Recommended Cameras you can find this at the top of the page below the 'n' on Techmoan. You'll find a variety of cameras listed here including Action Cams and Dash-Cams amongst others. Each entry has a link-back to my old review and a buying link.

A number of cameras that I initially thought were OK have been omitted as a result of reader/viewer feedback from unhappy owners who have experienced relibility problems.

UPDATE 2014 - The list of favorites is now shown in the right-hand column.

Hi Matt,

This is quite a good idea you have to list some of the better ones you have reviewed, nice quick reference page.
Just a thought, but have you ever thought about putting up some information about what's in the pipeline of up and coming reviews
so followers like me can look forward to what you have planned. What about things you have thought about reviewing but think no one
might like that for instance,so you stick it on the up and coming list and ask for feed back to see if its worth your time doing it.

Take care

Willie, while a list of upcoming projects sounds like a good idea...but the way I do things means that it doesn't fit well with my situation. My schedule is a bit haphazard at best. Some projects get abandoned when I can't get the item to work...some are on a long hiatus until I get a spark of inspiration, and the occasionally something comes along that I can shoot and upload within a day.

If I was more organised then it would be a good idea, but then again if I had a structured plan and a big to-do list, this would get old pretty fast. I like the ability to be spontaneous, it keeps things fun and interesting for me.

What do you think of the DR 32

August 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJustin

Hey Matt, you say the Möbius is the best spy camera as it is easy to hide. Can you tell me if the sound can be deactivated as in does not record sound, and does it have a time and date stamp on playback.

I would give it a try as a spy cam if these options were available on this.

@Paul - My Mobius review is pretty comprehensive... - you can see the setup screens at 12:55 which show the ability to turn the sound off (if you want)...the ability to turn the timestamp on or off is also an option.

@Justin - The DR32 falls into the category of cameras that I thought were OK, but others had problems with.

Thanks Matt

Maybe I should have watched the review on my laptop instead of in my car on an iPhone :@( I would have seen that.
