What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

SPECIAL DASHCAM CARDS

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for dashcams...here's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

The Mini 0801 - Tiny 1080p GPS Car Camera with an LCD Screen

UPDATE 2014 - be sure to look at the New Improved 0803 Model HERE.

I finally have an answer for the people who ask me which Dashcam I use…. it's this one.

Up until this point whenever I finished reviewing a car camera, I removed it from my car and boxed it up again. This is the first camera that's earned a permanant place on my windscreen.

There are a couple of reasons for this - firstly one thing that shouldn't be underestimated is the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor). I may be perfectly happy to live with a big piece of electronics hanging from the windscreen - but it's not completely down to me. The truth is though that I'm just as unhappy with anything messing up the car, however another more important concern is theft. Leaving an expensive device like a BlackVue camera in the windscreen is just not a good idea. To the average drug addict looking in car windows for something  to fund his next fix, you may as well have just left £50 on the passenger seat. However I'll be damned if I'm going to install and remove a camera every time I go for a short drive to the shops, I know that after a while I would get fed up doing it and leave it under a seat, and of course that's when something would happen.

However all those concerns are behind me because I've finally got a small car camera that appears to perform as well as any of the large devices that I've tried but that can be discretely mounted in a car and forgotten about.

Just prior to this camera's arrival I was thinking about how to permanently install the Mobius camera in my car and I still think that this would be a good alternative option if you can find some way to mount it, but I find that the design of the Mini 0801 fits better with my requirements.

Liam, you can wire directly into the car with a 12v to 5v mini USB cable (do a search for them on ebay - they are cheap). They come with 3m cables so you could wire into the fusebox using a fuse tap on an ignition live fuse or perhaps to an ignition live in the interior light as that tends to be near where you want to mount the camera.

I've been reading your review of the 0801 and it sounds ideal. The only query I have regards transferring the video saved on a computer into a video editing suite such as Adobe or Pinnacle Studio. Is this possible/easy? I live in Barbados and the standard of driving here can be very poor. Road fatalities are high for the driving population. Lack of education is a major problem and an instructional video would help save lives. An in car video camera would be ideal to illustrate common driving problems. David Jones

Great review, I've got the cheaper one without the screen in my daily driver, had it a couple of years now but it has a double din head unit so this one with the screen will be ideal for my other car which has not. They have come on a long way which is nice, especially with no one second delay between clips now. Only problem is there is always the minefield of Chinese suppliers to go through. Practically every small electronic device made in China is shared out between 4 or 5 factories who all put their own firmware on them and some are better than others.
I will deffo be getting one of these though as it looks ideal for my needs.

Dear Techmoan,

I found really useful your reviews on action cameras. Thank you very much.

After watching and comparing I bought the camera, but your link to amazon UK website goes to a camera that does not come with the GPS function. Oh no!! I hope I can replace the camera for the one that comes with the logger or something else I cannot quite understand. Or is there something else I can do?

I though you may want to know.

My kindest regards.

david jones --- Windows Live Movie Maker seems to be able to edit it, I think that's a free and common program. Also, you can just have a 1 minute loop, that way if anything happens you only have a minute worth of video to play and you don't have to edir out a whole video card worth of video. Anything that causes a collision will happen quickly, even skidding etc, 1 min loops are perfect.

January 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNeil M

Maria --- links will change etc. Just look for the name of the camera and the name of the manufacturer, if that's all the same as what Techmoan reviewed, you should be ok. You can also look at pictures and videos to compare it to Techmoan's review and make sure the functions and feature are the same too. It's annoying but you want decent quality.

January 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNeil M

NOTE! When hooking the camera up to a pc, don't disconnect the usb cable as it's connecting to the pc. I did this and a blue screen saying "connecting to usb" or something like that came on and stayed on for an hour! I just decided to pull the micro sd card out and that unstuck the screen and the camera works again. Yeesh, don't be too fast with the setting or buttons, take your time.

Much thanks go to Techmoan for his excellent reviews. I chose the Mini 0801 (without GPS) on the strength of these.
Not knowing anything about sellers Givoe, Aliexpress or Joovoo I ordered on Amazon (UK) on 27th December 2013 for £59.98 including standard delivery. The order stated it was an E-Prance sold and shipped by Eprance (note the hyphen discrepancy!) so I presumed the manufacturer to be E-Prance and the sales/shipping dept. to be Eprance. The following day Amazon notified me that my order had been dispatched and estimated delivery to be 8th January. This was duly accomplished. No complaints there. In fact there was even a nice little note in the box from MarieAnne who gave me her e-mail address in case I should experience any problems.
I have purchased a Samsung (most trustworthy in my estimation!) 32GB Class 6 SD card as Jazjon recommends (thank you for your time and efforts in working out contributors' problems, Jazjon, that photographer chappie who tried to slag you off turned out to be a complete Krass Ass).
I've now charged up my pride and joy through the usb link to my laptop and put in my settings. I've wired up the Jaguar hiding the wires as recommended with just enough of the cable supplied and it looks neat and unobtrusive.
Next to take the Big Cat with the "all-seeing eye" out for a spin and hope I don't encounter the need for the firmware updates when I try to put the results onto the computer, because I really haven't a clue what your talking about!

Hi Lawrence,

Thanks for that; i've just downloaded and is workig great.

:)

January 14, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn

@Glenn the bundled GPS player that comes with the 0801 is quite limited. I recommend using the full featured registratorviewer DATAKAM player instead.

Does anyone know where I can purchase the AV cable for this camera?
Will it play a live feed to an external screen?
Also, is there a suction mount available?
Seen it on some site, but can't remember where.
Thanks

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterfergiesfolly

@fergiesfolly
It uses a standard miniHDMI connection. You can buy a cheap miniHDMI to HDMI cable or adapter from monoprice. I'm pretty sure it does a live feed yes.

The suction cup option is only available from the FAKE 0801's out there. Check out this thread:

I bought this unit and am having difficulty getting the time to be accurate. It seems to change itself periodically.
What setting should I use for Eastern Standard time for Toronto Canada. You used 9 in your demo video..what should I use?

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commentergr8tlaker

Sorry it's taken me a week to get back but I've been in communication with Maryanne at Shenjen. The problem being that although I've taken some fine footage with the 0801 I can only see it through it's own screen. My laptop running Windows XP does not recognise the new hardware when I connect via the usb provided but it will charge the camera. Mayanne tells me there is nothing in the camera for the Installation Wizard to read on a non GPS camera and no installation disc is required.
According to the menu this camera is using firmware 20131026.
What do I have to do to get it to play back through my laptop???
Regards Odin's Raven.

Use a USB memory card reader and put the SD card in that... also install the K-lite codec pack on your PC.

OK thanks, On way to PC world now.

January 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterOdin's Raven

The ones they sell at poundland work fine for me.

January 17, 2014 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

I received mine from Amazon today, It's the GPS version without internal memory. I'm disappointed that there is no option in the menu to turn off the 'beep' sounds.

Has anyone else encountered this?

The firmware is 20131202

January 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterZed

In the video the beep sound volume option is onscreen at 15:02...I'd be surprised if this option has been removed.

January 19, 2014 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

I noticed it in your video prior to placing the order with Amazon, hence my suprise that the option is no longer there in firmware version 20131202.

Nice little camera other than that niggle. I would be willing to pay extra however if this camera had better build quality. I suspect it's asking too much for main-brand quality i.e. Sony, Panasonic etc. for a device at this price point. I am impressed with these smaller manufacturers willingness to quickly improve production/features when they get feedback from a community of users.

January 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterZed

Just bought a mini 0801 dvr and it has worked for a couple of days but now I find that the screen is off all the time, the blue light is on all the time even when power has been switched off and I cannot swith the camera on by pressing the on/off button.

Any one with any ideas as to what I can do to get the camera working once more.

Cheers Joe.

January 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJoe M

I purchased this and found a major flaw and I want to know if your camera have the same flaw. The protect function does not work. Once protected, it shows the lock symbol but it will just overwrite it when the card gets full. Let me know please if you have the same issue with this camera.

Just found all this information about which dash cam to buy and have been persuaded this is the gadget for me . However I am confused about the YouTube clip where you state the software isn't compatible with Mac , but it appears you were loading the sd card into an apple laptop ? Am I missing something in the explanation ? I only have mac machines and don't have access to any windows PCs so this would be a stumbling block . Thanks , Nick .

I'm running Windows on my Mac via bootcamp. The camera works fine on its own without software....it's only the GPS version that needs software to view the map data.
