What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

SPECIAL DASHCAM CARDS

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for dashcams...here's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

The Mini 0801 - Tiny 1080p GPS Car Camera with an LCD Screen

UPDATE 2014 - be sure to look at the New Improved 0803 Model HERE.

I finally have an answer for the people who ask me which Dashcam I use…. it's this one.

Up until this point whenever I finished reviewing a car camera, I removed it from my car and boxed it up again. This is the first camera that's earned a permanant place on my windscreen.

There are a couple of reasons for this - firstly one thing that shouldn't be underestimated is the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor). I may be perfectly happy to live with a big piece of electronics hanging from the windscreen - but it's not completely down to me. The truth is though that I'm just as unhappy with anything messing up the car, however another more important concern is theft. Leaving an expensive device like a BlackVue camera in the windscreen is just not a good idea. To the average drug addict looking in car windows for something  to fund his next fix, you may as well have just left £50 on the passenger seat. However I'll be damned if I'm going to install and remove a camera every time I go for a short drive to the shops, I know that after a while I would get fed up doing it and leave it under a seat, and of course that's when something would happen.

However all those concerns are behind me because I've finally got a small car camera that appears to perform as well as any of the large devices that I've tried but that can be discretely mounted in a car and forgotten about.

Just prior to this camera's arrival I was thinking about how to permanently install the Mobius camera in my car and I still think that this would be a good alternative option if you can find some way to mount it, but I find that the design of the Mini 0801 fits better with my requirements.

Nice little camera, but there are some problems ( at least with mine)
It just keeps recording and deleting older files even if they are protected .
Tried many times , but always finding latest file from last journey and nothing i have saved a day or two ago.
has anyone noticed something similar?

New MAC version in development
http://forum.dashcamtalk.com/threads/dashcam-viewer-software-for-mac-beta-testers-wanted.3883/

January 21, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJazJon

I have just purchased the latest Samoon GS6000 (3H2F) Car camera DVR with the latest A7 Ambarella chip. So far I have only tested in the daylight and I must say that I'm not overly impressed with the video considering this is meant to be the pinnacle of current technology.
I think the video reminds me of my old spy cameras that were barely 640x480 video. I have test video in the whopping resolution of 2304*1296P 30FPS and also 1080P 30FPS, neither of which was any better that some of the footage of Techmoans from a lot lesser cameras.
Perhaps this is because for some reason the sensor is only 3 megapixel. I don't fully understand the implications of having less pixels, but I thought that going to a lesser megapixel would mean lesser quality in the video. Perhaps I'm mistaken, but it seems that cheaper and older cameras were up round the 5 megapixel range. Weird!
The menu layout and options are very basic to say the least and my camera has the latest firmware installed being version 131028V1. There are no options for picture adjustment, other than the 3 resolutions to choose from and turning WDR on or off.
Forget the instruction manual, that's a load of crap! There is an option to turn on LDWS which I understand is Lane departure warning system. But there's no clue as to how it works and my attempts to activate it so far do not appear to be successful. I know because i just about run myself off the road trying to test if it did anything or not.
Would like to find a forum with others discussing this camera if anyone knows of one?
Thanks. Mat.

Great reviews by Techmoan - thank you so much. Have bought the Mini 0801 with GPS, and on the basis of a few days experience, have ordered another for her indoors.

I notice recommendations by posters to download the viewer software from registratorviewer.com, but my virus protection software reports this as a potentially dangerous download, so I have blocked it. Did anyone else get the warning?

JazJon:

Thanks for your interest, but if the program writer is confident the download is safe, surely he should be persuading the antivirus sellers to remove the block from his program? I bought the McAfee software to protect my computer, and cannot challenge warnings. By the way, this is the first time in 12 months that I see a McAfee warning of a potentially dangerous download, so I am reluctant to override it.

@JazJon

Based on the screenshots and user comments, I'd love to be able to use the program, but the integrity of my computer and data is not something I am prepared to risk. Try convincing McAfee that all is OK, and I'd be very happy if they agree, because it looks like a great program.

January 25, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterChrisE

@ChrisE

You could set up a virtual machine using virtualbox and test =) completely safe

January 25, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJacob

Can the camara be rotated 180 degrees (record correctly the other way up )so that you can clip it into the window sticker from left to right? That way it would not interfere with the rear view mirror. Or is it only made for left hand drives and this is the best fitting we can get?

January 25, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJep

It can only be rotated approx 90° so can't face forward if the mount is on the right.

January 25, 2014 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

@ChrisE if you submit to McAfee it means they check it before adding it to their whitelist, they won't do that without making sure the program is actually safe, you don't need to convince them of anything, they check it themselves, those requests need to come from customers not vendors

January 26, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterjokiin

@jokiin Thanks for the advice. I went to the download site to obtain a repeat warning to refer to McAfee, and guess what? There was NO warning, and the program (v5.6.0.3) downloaded fine! So, I don't know whether it became whitelisted in the meantime or what?

Anyway, I'm very happy with my first look at the program - so much nicer than the version supplied with the camera. Thanks Vadim!

I have watched your review several times and made notes. You give the impression that it is simple to use but when I look t the question that people have posted it is like I am reading a different lauguage!

I do not know what TS or MOV are? Or if I need to know?
If you have problems with the transport stream files in importing them into things , I do not stand a chance ,if this is something I need to do!
When connected to the computer you say load all the files if you want to, but you just did a few to show us what to do. Do I have to load any or is it only if you want to see them?

I was hoping to just set it up and not have to do anything with it unless I was in an accident .I do not intend to play it back to see where I have been. How often do you have to update the firmware? Does the company that you bought it from just send you updates? Do you pay for firmware?

On the Mobius camera I see that you just drag and drop to update the firmware onto the memory card, is it as simple with this camera?

I do not want to buy a fake camera so I am thinking of getting it from Aliexpress from Givoe. (Mainly because of the firmware as Jezjon says they are good with updating it and it comes with MOV) But they have two cameras and I can not see the difference except in price and on one they say Super Night time vision. Also concerned that the come from China, where there have been posts that there are many factories , I think somebody said that some do not produce the firmware to go with them.

Am I right in thinking that if you choose the one with the GPS you can not get rid of the speed indicator unless you turn off the GPS? If so I will buy one without GPS.

The new Ambarella A7 is coming into JooVuu soon, around £95. I do not know whether to wait and get this on? But if it is very different they may have not ironed out the bugs that seem to come with new products. So for a complete novice I might be best sticking with the tried and tested.

If you can give me any different advice on where to buy this camera (that is not a fake) with MOV and a company that will keep me up to date sending firmware (if that is what they do?) and the best after sales service please guide me. I am in the UK.

Thanks for reading this.I have to remind myself that they say, "The only daft question is the one not asked" So I have asked.

January 28, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJep

I've read about the fakes. Can someone advise whether this is a fake??????

An upgrade to the Mini 0801. The Mini 0801 with Ambarella A7 chip and WDR makes this one of the best cameras going. It's increased performance in the dark due to the chip and WDR means you catch your journeys in crystal clear quality in the same discreet body. Check out the specifications below.

...and should I buy it?

Thanks in advance.

January 29, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterChris

Hi Mat, I've just bought one of these Mini 0801 with GPS and used your Review as the persuader to purchase, and I have to say, it appears to be an excellent piece of Kit.
During the menu setup I noticed slight variations within the menu sections compared with your review. It would seem that the Firmware has been updated to 20/40/16 (whereas your review camera was 20/30/617)
One of the main points that had changed was the speed showing on the film - now you can change it to MPH / or leave as Km/h
Now to install it into my car this weekend
Regards - Roger

January 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRoger Appleyard

@ChrisE likely someone else had already submitted the file and it was cleared before you came back to it

@Chris no not a fake, this is an update version being released after Chinese New Year, officially titled an 0803

January 31, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterjokiin

@jokiin Yes, that's what I thought. Now I am trying to download registratorviewer to my laptop, and Norton (as opposed to McAfee) doesn't just warn, it flatly refuses to install the program, and deletes the download. Bah!

sorry, the previous post (re Norton) was from ChrisE, not Chris

February 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterChrisE

I ended up buying my camera from Joovuu they have provided exceptional service. I contacted them by email late one evening and got an instant reply. I was concerned that they did not give an address or phone number to contact them but this concern proved unfounded. I received my camera within a couple of days with the latest firmware. I would recomend them to others.

I am hoping you might be able to tell me, if I was involved in an accident would I manually have to press the lower button to padlock that loop, so it would not be overwritten or is it possible to set it to padlock it automatically? Has this anything to do with the g-sensor ? (I have this set to close) Should I change the G-sensor calibration which is also on no?

Also is it correct that I can see a padlock on the file in the camera but not marked as such on the computer?

Thanks for any help.

Sorry please ignore the second paragraph of the previous message. I have re-watched the tape for beginners and have found the answer.
