What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

The Mini 0801 - Tiny 1080p GPS Car Camera with an LCD Screen

UPDATE 2014 - be sure to look at the New Improved 0803 Model HERE.

I finally have an answer for the people who ask me which Dashcam I use…. it's this one.

Up until this point whenever I finished reviewing a car camera, I removed it from my car and boxed it up again. This is the first camera that's earned a permanant place on my windscreen.

There are a couple of reasons for this - firstly one thing that shouldn't be underestimated is the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor). I may be perfectly happy to live with a big piece of electronics hanging from the windscreen - but it's not completely down to me. The truth is though that I'm just as unhappy with anything messing up the car, however another more important concern is theft. Leaving an expensive device like a BlackVue camera in the windscreen is just not a good idea. To the average drug addict looking in car windows for something  to fund his next fix, you may as well have just left £50 on the passenger seat. However I'll be damned if I'm going to install and remove a camera every time I go for a short drive to the shops, I know that after a while I would get fed up doing it and leave it under a seat, and of course that's when something would happen.

However all those concerns are behind me because I've finally got a small car camera that appears to perform as well as any of the large devices that I've tried but that can be discretely mounted in a car and forgotten about.

Just prior to this camera's arrival I was thinking about how to permanently install the Mobius camera in my car and I still think that this would be a good alternative option if you can find some way to mount it, but I find that the design of the Mini 0801 fits better with my requirements.

My apologies, you are correct, the GPS is (or is not) within the base stuck to the windscreen. The link that I provided does include GPS.

Just a quick question regarding the GPS. Can I use the GPS option to mark the video but remove it from burning the speed on the movie. In other words, I like the GPS part of it but dont want to use the speed which is associated with the GPS process? Thanks/

February 25, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLawrence

@Lawrence. That's easy, just disable ALL OSD in the 0801 setting menu. The GPS data is still captured in a seprate file. This data can be read by
You can then use RegistratorViewer options to turn on OSD and either embed the data into the resulting .mp4 or have it create a sub titles file that can be imported to youtube or turned on/off via VLC player etc.

This was you are not forced to hard code the OSD

Much obliged for the answer...
I'm in two minds whether to buy the unit now or wait for the new model coming out any day now .

February 25, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLawrence

Picked one of these up from amazon uk, it arrived today and was fairly straightforward to setup, the version that arrived allows MPH as well as KPH recording of the speed.
I've used the enclosed playback software, and also the player mentioned in the article (both in a windows VM as I run a Mac) and they are adequate.
A question though, is there any software available for the Mac that will allow playback like the windows variants, or does that just come with the expensive players (thinking blackview here)

I ordered a mini 0801 from ebay seller Combi-UK at 9pm Friday. Had an email confirming dispatch an hour later (10pm!) and it arrived mid-day Monday. £109 inc free delivery, GPS and 16gb card. Maybe not the cheapest but no waiting and latest firmware.

One question (sorry, newbie): the lcd has a protective film over it which I will remove, but the lens looks to be covered with something flexible too. I don't want to scrape at it, so can anyone remember if the lens should be like this, or should I attempt to remove the 'cover'?

Thanks, Bill

Thinking of buying the mini 0801, there have been references on here to the new version with A7 chip - also mentioned on other forums, but I can't find one on sale, has anyone found a vendor with the newest model.

Also, I get the impression that some people who have bought the 0801 a few months ago with 2013xxxx firmware have been able to download 2014xxxx firmware from an eprance website.

Is that correct? I haven't found any eprance listings on ebay uk or amazon uk that mentions the ability to download new/revised firmware.

Last question, those who have mentioned the option of MPH or KPH speed recordings in the GPS version, is that a set up option that can be changed easily? For instance driving to Dover, it wold be best to record with MPH, but once across the Channel, it would be best to change to KPH, so in the event of an accident or incident if one wanted to play the recording back to the Gendarme, it would show me driving legally in KPH - something that he would recognise.

Many thanks for anticipated answers.

@Neil, A7 version is not out yet, due to be released soon, you can see the details at

MPH or KPH is just a menu toggle and very easy to change

Thanks for the fast reply.

March 6, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNeil

Hi Folks,
I recently posed this question but have not received any workable replies. When downloading the 32g card to my computer the video jumps about every second. I was advised to download registrator viewer but my security software threw up a warning but I carried on and the computer crashed and I had to restore. It downloads and plays in Quick Time Movie. Any ideas?

March 7, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterkit

Hi Folks,
I managed to smooth out my video playback just by updating the Quicktime software. Its now smoooooth.

March 7, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterkit

Hi Mat, A long time ago, on your review for the Mni 0801, you had originally did a link to the New Zealand site. That's where I purchased it, and I wanted to go back and see if they had a firmware update but can't remember what the URL was. Do you happen to still have it? Your blog has different links now.

It's frustrating because I can't get any of the firmware updates from DashCam Talk to work (the camera just doesn't recognize the file names, and I've tried 7 different variations)

I remember e-mailing them asking for a firmware update but never received a response. Sounds like I may have to re-buy the darn thing from E-Prance just to get a decent model so I can upgrade to MOV and have MPH instead of KPH. Sigh...

PS: Love your non car camera videos and always look forward to watching a new one. Thanks for spending time on these...

PSS: Only the first page of comments are visible here... clicking on any of the other pages gives me an error "The page /process/CreateJournalEntryComment could not be located on this website."... of course, I'm trying to navigate while entering this comment, so that may be the problem...

Apart from the fact that you review all the product reviews that I have seen of yours so far I must say they are excellent, well spoken and detailed so well that after watching your review of The Mini 0801 DashCam including GPS I raced out and purchased it including a Samsung Micro SD 32gig card here in Australia for an affordable price of $174.00 including freight.

I have since fitted the unit, tested it and I am very pleased that I viewed your review and agree wholeheartedly with all your comments Re the Mini 080.

By the way here in Australia the Mini 0801 comes standard with GPS mount and the file format is .mov.

However I found it necessary to enable me to operate the "DVRPlayer.exe" I had to download and install "QuickTime" (latest free version 7.7.5). The captured movie and related GPS data works just as shown in your review.

Thank you once again Techmoan...................keep up your excellent revies.

March 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTasgandy

Ken, I can't recall the name of the NZ based reseller, but they won't have any special firmware, they just bought a crate of cameras from China and sold them on. I seem to recall that they stopped selling them.

March 9, 2014 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Techmoan what SW are you using to "edit" your captured images?

I am using TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works 5.0 at this stage, simply wondering if the SW you are using may be better (always on the lookout for better SW).

Ken as I have only just purchased my unit from "DashCams Australia" 5 days ago I looked up the firmware version as shipped.
Firmware version:20 | 40 | 16
Also I have noticed that I can choose either MPH or KPH
Hope this info assists.

March 10, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTasgandy

Thanks Mat, I've spent way to long on trying to upgrade the firmware without success, so I'll stick with what I have until the next great thing comes along ;-)

@ jokiin on 6 March

Hi jokiin

You directed me to where they show an expected delivery in Feb or early March 2014 of an A7 chip, WDR, glass lens Mini 080; I also wrote to e-prance who as is clear from this forum also sell the Mini 0801 and asked them via ebay uk about a new release

"I'm looking to buy my first dashcam, and the mini 0801 gets good reviews, but some forums say there is now:
a) a model with an improved chip the A7
b) WDR
c) glass lens
d) 20140116 firmware
I don't see any models with the A7 chip and 2014 firmware etc from you on ebay uk.
Will you be listing this model and at what price please (with GPS) no extra internal memory."

and they replied:

"Sorry for reply to you so late
There must be some misunderstandings, we have many kinds of cameras
but the mini 0801 has no A7 chipset, only Ambarella A2S60 "

So now I'm totally confused if the Mini 0801 is or is not having a new version with glass lens, WDR and A7 chip.

Anyone got any confirmation either way?

March 13, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNeil

@Neil the A7 version (official designation is 0803) hasn't been released as yet, there's a technical bug that needs to be resolved prior to release (that firmware version you quoted is for an 0801), appearance wise it looks the same although the USB has been changed to Micro USB rather Mini USB

Joovuu will likely have it prior to any of the Chinese resellers on Aliexpress, eBay etc as those Chinese resellers buy the 0801 off 3rd party factories that don't have access to the product as yet, the Joovuu version is from the original manufacturer of the product

there's some further discussion about the A7 version on the dashcamtalk forums

March 13, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterjokiin

Thanks for another fast reply, the Joovuu website lists the dash cam as "Mini 0801 A7 & WDR"; I realise that it's a minefield out there with similar products having similar but not quite the same names and then possible clones as well.

Hope you understand my caution at not wanting to buy an almost obsolete product when apparently the next model is just around the corner.

Thanks for the pointer to dashcamtalk forum - plenty of discussion and anticipation, but you are the only one telling us on here and dashcamtalk about possible/delayed/pending delivery dates, which is helpful, but are you in fact Mr Mini 0801/0803? :-)

March 13, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNeil

@Neil sorry, I'm not Mr 0801 (I'm Mr GuardTrak), we are quite close though, just helping to sort this firmware glitch with them now

Joovuu listed the new version before the model designation was finalised but for reference sake it was listed under the 0801 banner as there are so many copies these days it's hard to know what's what, I'm sure the model details will get updated on their website once the product is ready to ship

March 13, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterjokiin

Thanks for your further clarification.
Hope you didn't mind my tongue in cheek reference to Mr Mini 0801....!

March 14, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNeil

I sent a faulty 0801 back to e-prance via e-bay 2 months ago- They confirmed as received- Still to date- NO REFUND.!!!
Emailed ebay- No response from them either. Very Unhappy with e-prance customer service.

March 14, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHarry

@Neil no problem at all :)

March 14, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterjokiin

Can anyone confirm if the old 801 will fit into the new 803 bracket?

I don't want to have to remove my old bracket from the front of the car just to run another cable through and then buy more sticky pads to fit the old 801 into the rear window. Otherwise I might just have to buy another 801 instead of the 803.

March 14, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGordon

the mount is backward compatible, the 0803 will be using Micro USB connectors but other than that they are the same, comes with the cable so no real concern to stick the new mount and cable on the rear and use the old camera in that and use the new camera up front on your old mount, spare sticky pad included should you want to move the mount anyway

March 14, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterjokiin

@ Gordon

yes it fits into the mount perfectly. I personally tested the new camera and it uses the same camera housing besides the micro usb connector on the camera body.

March 14, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLawrence

@jokiin and @Lawrence

Thanks for the prompt replies.
If you are involved in selling these I would make a point of including this information on the site. I expect there are a lot of users that would be willing to upgrade to the new version if they knew they can just pass on the old one to onto their second car or the other halfs car without having to rewire the whole thing again (twice).

March 14, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGordon

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to let you know that is having a sale this weekend. You can get 5% off all products (even the ones out of stock like the new Mini 0801 A7). All you have to do is use the code: 5%offyay!

March 22, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJooVuu

Hi, I have just installed a mini dascam I ordered the e-prance but was told it was out of stock, they offered me the generic one called Jado. It is as people say small and cannot be seen. I am glad I checked techmoan he gave a good insight into the workings and instructions of how to use it. The booklet with instructions is shall I say not that informative. The seller of the item was very helpful though. Played back on the PC has been very good. So far the results of the recordings day and night are excellent for what is a cheap camera.

March 24, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermichael

Ok this may take a little time, just sit back and imagine that you are trying to explain something technical to your Grandad,(now that can be difficult), I am in all probability older than your actual Grandad and I need some help. Can I at this point just say that anything more complicated than a bicycle pump causes me to break out in a cold sweat so please omit all the tech speak and abbreviations oh and please keep it simple. Having seen that expert Techmoan and his excellent presentation of the 1080P in car camera I purchased one on the internet " well that's not strictly true" I got my twenty five year old Granddaughter to purchase it for me as I am not up to speed for that sort of thing yet ( but i'm getting close) It appears to work just fine in the car and if I remember where I put my spectacles can follow my progress on the camera screen. Right I have now got to the problem........Windows started to play back on my desktop via a normal USB connector ( Windows 7 ) but after a few timed segments went into one of it's sulks and refused to recognise the camera, I got a message saying that Windows has stopped this device due to a CODE 43 problem. I have tried everything I have found on this forum most of which is too technical for me, without success, oh and I did download the link that Techmoan gave for windows alas to no avail. This is now my third day slaving over a hot desk computer with nothing to show for it except a sore bottom" must get myself a better chair. Have you had the same problem and more importantly have you managed to solve it ?. and even more importantly have you got the patience to try and help this old codger. Thank you for taking the time to read my tale of woe. Microsoft as usual have been as helpful as a hole in the head.
