What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

SPECIAL DASHCAM CARDS

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for dashcams...here's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

The Mini 0801 - Tiny 1080p GPS Car Camera with an LCD Screen

UPDATE 2014 - be sure to look at the New Improved 0803 Model HERE.

I finally have an answer for the people who ask me which Dashcam I use…. it's this one.

Up until this point whenever I finished reviewing a car camera, I removed it from my car and boxed it up again. This is the first camera that's earned a permanant place on my windscreen.

There are a couple of reasons for this - firstly one thing that shouldn't be underestimated is the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor). I may be perfectly happy to live with a big piece of electronics hanging from the windscreen - but it's not completely down to me. The truth is though that I'm just as unhappy with anything messing up the car, however another more important concern is theft. Leaving an expensive device like a BlackVue camera in the windscreen is just not a good idea. To the average drug addict looking in car windows for something  to fund his next fix, you may as well have just left £50 on the passenger seat. However I'll be damned if I'm going to install and remove a camera every time I go for a short drive to the shops, I know that after a while I would get fed up doing it and leave it under a seat, and of course that's when something would happen.

However all those concerns are behind me because I've finally got a small car camera that appears to perform as well as any of the large devices that I've tried but that can be discretely mounted in a car and forgotten about.

Just prior to this camera's arrival I was thinking about how to permanently install the Mobius camera in my car and I still think that this would be a good alternative option if you can find some way to mount it, but I find that the design of the Mini 0801 fits better with my requirements.

It's not a scenario I'm familiar with....however your solution should cost £1. Pop into Poundland, get a USB Memory card reader and then instead of plugging the camera into your PC, take the SD card out of the camera, insert it into your £1 USB SD Card reader and plug this into your PC. Wait until the SD card shows up on your computer, then load the playback software.

Good news for all you Apple OSX users. There is a new viewer available for the 'mini 0801, its currently a beta release and will require further development, but its a start.

https://www.ojocam.com/content/ojocam_player_0318_beta.zip

It supports OSX 10.7, 10.8 and 10.9. Any feedback, please let me know.

Mr. Techmoan -- love your reviews; followed you for years. Wonderful stuff. Thank you.

BUYING: (March 2014) Finally bought the 0801 from your EPrance link on Amazon for about $110; it came in about three days despite the (almost) three week stated delivery. I was delighted!

FITTING: All good -- with a minor gripe: the camera can rotate only 90 degrees in it's mount. This is certainly enough for windscreen/ windshield facing out, either front or rear -- but it means the camera cannot be used as a 'taxi cam' where it records what is going on inside the vehicle.

@ CXRider

I've downloaded and tried the ojocam player, on a macbook pro (mid 2010) running 10.9.
It works brilliantly (somewhat smoother than the windows players I've used)
I've noticed no issues to speak of (that weren't self inflicted)

Many thanks for posting this

0801 A2 version with GPS only cost $79.9 on foxoffer, also will sell the A7 version for a good price soon.

Excellent review, in the strength of it I bought my 0801 off amazon,. The first one had to go back! The fault seemed to be with the mount. When I had the lead plugged into the GPS mount the red 'charging' lamp always seemed to flicker even after a considerable amount of time powered up. After a while this was not only annoying but became obvious something wasn't right. I bypassed the GPS mount and plugged direct into the camera body. This sorted it straight away so it was the connection between the mount and camera. BTW I thought I'd loose the GPS function but I didn't, so the power & data connection are bi directional. My view was because of the poor connection between the mount and the camera the power kept dropping out and it would run on battery then as the power restored it would start to charge again. So to recap the blue lamp flash slowly ' recording ' with a red flashing lamp behind it. The replacement from Amazon was fine.
Only comment I have is nice camera pity about the mount. It's sloppy, when engaged it always looks like it needs to go in another 4 mm as the shoulder in the mount never looks fully home, perhaps if it did go in that extra 4 mm where the guides double up ( I.e. Both sides top and bottom of the hot shoe) it wouldn't suffer the issue.
My question! I prefer to leave the camera mounted all the time and hard wire it, bringing a USB cable right back under the dash to a point where I can unplug it from the power supply and plug it into a laptop to pull off the data from the card. Somewhere I read that you cannot connect to the camera with a PC with the GPS mount in situ ..... Is that correct??
Once again great review tech moan! Thank you
Hope you don't mind my 2d
Steve

If I remember correctly, the mounts only have power connections in the USB socket rather than a full data connection. Easiest workaround for your issue is to take the SD card out of your camera and insert it into a USB card reader on your PC. It's unlikely you'd need to do this more than a handful of times in a year.

Hello,

Is there a way to set the recording loop to more than 5 mins?

April 2, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermark

@mark I do not believe there is a way to set to more than 5 mins. In another words, the biggest file size is 5 mins of recording.

what's the reason you need to set it to a longer time? Thanks.

I placed an order with joovuu.com for the new 0801 Mini 2014 edition expected by late March at theaters.
It's now April and still no new release. Sigh!

April 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJim

I just ordered the 0801 off ebay and cannot wait to try it out. It will be replacing an inexpensive F198 car DVR that worked fine, but was too cumbersome to attach & remove constantly. Plus I wanted a smaller dvr that still had a viewscreen. My only concern is, in the the video, in the scene showing the outside view of your windshield, the white mounting tape for the base still seemed quite visible. So I also ordered (off ebay) a roll of 1 inch wide 3M VHB 5952 tape in a dark grey, that should hopefully make the mount less visible from the outside. I enjoy your blogs & videos!

April 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTonyD

@Jim, the manufacturer only produced limited quantity for the new 0801 A7 version for testing, I think you need wait for more days.

April 3, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterbill

I see that JouVuu have updated their website to indicate a delay in shipping the new 0801 until late April/early May. Better be worth it... I'm back ordered until it ships.

Hi Norman who posted on 24th March 2014. I had the same problem with the usb cable, so I got an SD micro card adapter, this worked fine. This goes into the SD card reader slot on the computer if you have one of course. Like you I am a grandfather and find the techno speak a little difficult. I have been using the camera now for three weeks and all playbacks with the SD card system is fine. I am also using windows 7. Hope this has been of some help.

Anyone know what the differences are between the various versions? The Mini 0801 Ambarella A2S60 from Foxoffer at $80 with GPS logger looks like a great deal compared to the original price/version ?

Also can you record GPS at all times in the background and video only when you want to? I'd need that for a cross-country trip in the US and don't want to record everything but still like to have the whole GPS track. Thanks!

April 11, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterwebvan

Foxoffer version is the same, video is always recorded, can't do just GPS

April 11, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterjokiin

Hi
Just got this from Amazon yesterday & installed in the car. When I first connected it to my pc (Win 8) via usb it showed as an empty drive. I always eject usb devices to avoid corruption but, having done this the pc doesn't see it when I reconnect (it does see other devices). Any ideas?

April 12, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJ

@J

Mine did the same thing, and others have reported the same in earlier posts I think, I gave up trying to solve it as I can't think of any reason to connect the camera to the PC again. If I need the footage off the camera I just pull out the card which works fine.

April 12, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGordon

Thanks Gordon. I'll just pick up a usb card reader & see if that works.

April 12, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJ

Has anyone bought one from FoxOffer and received it yet??

Apart from the lower light capability and the MPH is there anything else about the new A7 which will justify the 40% extra cost??

April 14, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPeter West

hi looking for advice please. have just bought 0801 with gps. have gps switched on but did not want gps speed showing on video playback via computer. however it is showing on video playback. if i were to switch gps off on camera set up would that stop the gps speed being imprinted on the video footage via computer but also mean i would lose the gps logger when viewing it via registrator viewer?

I got my cam today. Have it working but when I play the video through the supplied player I see the GPS coords on the video but it tells me the GPS route file is unavailable. The file manager built in to the player says Unavailable and Not Exist. In Explorer I can see the GPS/gpsXXXX files. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Techmoan,
I have a problem with that particular camera. Is your camera always worked without a problem?

When the memory card is empty recording works properly.
When the memory card is full the camera should delete the oldest file and record a new video. Unfortunately, when the memory card is full, the camera will record 1-2 minutes and stops recording and displays the message "Low Speed Card!"
I tested the camera on a memory card samsung 32 GB (Class 6 and Class 10 also)

I have firmware version FW VER: 20140308. Username e-prance from ebay sent it to me a week ago with the hope that the problem will cease. It did not help.

Previously, I had firmware version FW VER: 20130913. Same problem happened, but with another message "Storage Error"

April 15, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterelbandito

@elbandito.

Did you buy it from Eprance on ebay?
If so, did they just send you the firmware or did they offer to replace it?

I was going to buy one of these, but need to be sure they work as described with regard to the over writing - else it defeats the object in having one for car recording?
Techmoan mentions the feature, but did not say he had tested it - so maybe its a common problem with these and it maybe doesn't work.

I also cannot find any reference to motion detection - is that not available on this unit?

April 15, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPeter West

@Peter West

I bought the camera from e-prance on eBay. I told him the problem and asked if firmware update will help. He sent me a new firmware and instructions for its installation. Upload new software is very simple, but unfortunately it did not help.
I wrote again today to e-prance and wait for a response.

I was going to buy even two of the same camera. One for my brother and one for my dad. However, I pause with the decision until the problem with the loop will be removed.

The motion sensor only works when the power is connected. Leaving the camera in a closed car without power is pointless, because the camera does not turn on. Techmoan mentioned this in his review at the time of 14:10.
Also, I do not recommend the use of the motion sensor, because when I'm driving on the highway, the camera will interrupt the recording, thinking that the car is at a standstill. Probably uniform background landscape fool the sensor.

Sorry for my poor English, but this is not my native language.

April 15, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterelbandito

Thanks @elbandito

Your English is fine - better than my Spanish (or any other language).

I too will hold off until I am confident that the looping is not going to be a general problem.

I commented about the motion sensor because, in addition to using it in the car, I was hoping that with a USB battery pack it would be possible to use it elsewhere and the motion detection would have been useful. Assuming that a USB battery pack would last for a reasonable period to make it useful.

If you have the time - I'd be interested what you discover about the looping problem.

Thanks

I posted yesterday that my GPS didn't seem to be working with the player. That started working.

I am having a hard time with the unit still. I started out to work this morning and the unit seemed to be working but when I got home this evening I found out that the unit is not switching off when I park the car. I had many clips of the car just sitting there waiting for me like a puppy. I know that some cars don't have power to the cigarette lighter when the ignition is off but mine does. Do I have to unplug the power from the cigarette lighter or should the unit be powering off when the key is off???

I also did not see my clip from the drive to work but assume that is because the unit looped around and started overwriting them while it was parked.

I'll test again tomorrow.

April 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHoward Taylor

If your lighter socket is permanently live when the ignition is off then the camera will not switch off.
Pull the socket when you stop - and investigate if its possible to change the lighter socket to ignition off. I believe some cars have the facility to change it by changing the fuse to a different socket in the fuse box.

April 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPeter West

I just tested it again and when I unplug the device from the cig lighter it shuts down as expected. That is ok but the time keeps changing. I had it set properly when I just left the house and when I got back the time went from 8:30pm to 7am. Don't understand that.

If any one is interested I was driving on some neighborhood streets that aren't lit well and as you might expect the video wasn't very good - just barely acceptable but when I got on the main streets it was very good.

Overall I am happy with this unit.
