What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

The Mini 0801 - Tiny 1080p GPS Car Camera with an LCD Screen

UPDATE 2014 - be sure to look at the New Improved 0803 Model HERE.

I finally have an answer for the people who ask me which Dashcam I use…. it's this one.

Up until this point whenever I finished reviewing a car camera, I removed it from my car and boxed it up again. This is the first camera that's earned a permanant place on my windscreen.

There are a couple of reasons for this - firstly one thing that shouldn't be underestimated is the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor). I may be perfectly happy to live with a big piece of electronics hanging from the windscreen - but it's not completely down to me. The truth is though that I'm just as unhappy with anything messing up the car, however another more important concern is theft. Leaving an expensive device like a BlackVue camera in the windscreen is just not a good idea. To the average drug addict looking in car windows for something  to fund his next fix, you may as well have just left £50 on the passenger seat. However I'll be damned if I'm going to install and remove a camera every time I go for a short drive to the shops, I know that after a while I would get fed up doing it and leave it under a seat, and of course that's when something would happen.

However all those concerns are behind me because I've finally got a small car camera that appears to perform as well as any of the large devices that I've tried but that can be discretely mounted in a car and forgotten about.

Just prior to this camera's arrival I was thinking about how to permanently install the Mobius camera in my car and I still think that this would be a good alternative option if you can find some way to mount it, but I find that the design of the Mini 0801 fits better with my requirements.

@JSJ About the firmware, you will find it on dashcamtalk, there are always somebody share the latest firmware. No necessary to contact the manufacturer to get the firmware.

See Fast forward to 23 minutes in and you can see the picture start flashing then it starts developing weird audio sounds. I'm guessing the internal battery is dieing at the end. When I get back in my car it doesn't record my trip which is why I bought a dashcam. Anybody have any clues as to what the problem is? The firmware is VER 20:40404 and the camera is about a week old.

Techmoan, in your video of the 0801 you said the "chip" was H264. you never mention which is in the 0803 but there are a lot of sellers , which chip should I make sure my new 0803 has.

June 19, 2014 | Unregistered Commentersport98

Can this record incidents while parked up at night, against acts of vandalism?

June 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCannockwolf

@Cannockwolf Yes it can be accomplished by hard wire the camera to a continuous power source.

June 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLarry

@sport98 The chip inside 0803 is A7L50D.

June 19, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCannockwolf

H264 is a video standard and not a chip
"H.264 is a new video codec standard which can achieve high quality video in relatively low bitrates."

Many video chips record in H264 - including those used in the 0801 and the later 0803.

It's more than likely a compatibility issue with the Class 10 card you are using (see the text on the right of this page next to my advert for the Sandisk cards). Use a Class 6 and your issue should be resolved. Not all class 10 cards cause a problem and the 0803 doesn't have this issue.

July 5, 2014 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

cheers techmoan..just ordered a class 6........will let you know how it goes..... spotty dod

July 7, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterspotty dog

I've had the same issue as spotty dog so I'll be interested to hear if a class 6 card works. One question I have, if I've 'locked' a clip with the down button how do I go about deleting that clip later? Is it even possible? Thanks in advance.

Thank you for a very useful insight into the 803 camera. So much so, that I bought one!

However, I have one question: -

Can you mute the speaker (apart from sticking tape over it)? So that it does not make the annoying chirp when switching on and off.

Thanks for all your reports - a great service.

July 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDavid

IMHO you don't want to mute the loudspeaker, those noises at least tell you that all is well.

My (second) 0803 sometimes locks up and goes into standby and gives a very short beep before doing so. I reckon it's best to have the sounds, so that you at least get a warning if the camera isn't recording during your journey and is a small price to pay for the start up and shut down beeps.

Others may disagree :-(

July 15, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNeil

Good review. Bought an 803, which is as you say a great size, but I cannot get the menu to come up. Press the "up" button for an extended period and nothing happens. Turned the unit on and off a few times, no change. It does work to turn the mike on and off though. Any thoughts? Thanks.

July 21, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDaniel

you need to stop any active recording to get into the menu, if the mic toggles on and off it suggests it's recording

July 21, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterjokiin

Bingo! Thanks. Daniel

My 0803 with GPS, no internal 8gb record the route well ( with all corners) but locate it in the middle of ocean (between Europe and USA). Which may be the problem? I'm from Romania. I use the latest firmware 2014.05.10.

Love the You tube review and love the dashcam (ojocam pro from California). Having trouble however connecting via usb port and running the registrator viewer.. I get the message "device driver software was not successfully installed" when connectiong the dashcam and although I get the GPS map on the viewer, there's no video. It tells me the .mov videos are broken, although they run fine on other players.

July 29, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGeorge Miller

copy the files to PC before playback is a better option

dashcams generally make poor card readers

Hi Techmoan, Just received my 801 with internal memory and GPS. How do you configure the settings so I can see the Date and Time, Latitude and Logitude and my Driver Name without the Speed. You have this setup in your video however I cannot get the GPS data without the speed displaying and with the driver name showing. I can get Time Only, Date Only, Date and Time Only, Date Time and GPS including speed, and Date/Time with Driver Name.. I want to get it set up like you have with Date Time, Lat/Long and Driver Name (no speed). Thanks and nice work.

I took your advice and bought the mini 803.I installed it in a ford f150 I had to hot wire the cigarette adaptor to the fuse box since the camera actually uses five volt power. The problem would be that an unuspecting person would cut off the adapter which is actually the voltage reducer.
the camera works fine but I cant get my computer to connect to it. The camera just says usb connecting and never actually connects. Can you advise?

August 15, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterrobert

Hi Techmoan.
I thought I would take the time to post a small word of warning to you and your followers.
I purchased an 801 Dashcam with internal memory and GPS on your advice from one of your fantastic reviews.
I was very happy with the camera and it all seemed to work well until just over 4 months from purchase date (April), I was driving to work and about 5 minuets into the journey I could smell a burning smell. I could not work out where it was coming from for a minute until I looked up and saw smoke coming from this camera. As I was in busy traffic I had to think quickly and all I could do was pull the camera out of its GPS cradle. In my opinion, if I had left it in there much longer, the camera might have caught fire as the whole car was filling with smoke. It is winter here in Australia so the camera has not been in any heat to make it fail so drastically. I had done nothing different to the previous 4 months of use.
Have you heard of any similar situations? I have sent a message to the *bay supplier but I don't expect any reply.
I am now a bit wary of this product.

@ Raphael

I had a similar situation with the 0803 about a week after buying it almost immediately upon release in the UK.

Didn't get as far as smoke, thank goodness, but strong smell of hot plastic.

My UK based seller (not via ebay) replaced the unit with another upon receipt of my faulty one.

The replacement was used briefly in the UK and is used daily now in Spain (temperatures often up to the high 30/low 40 degs C, and because of where I have to park my car, it is in sunlight from about 0800 to 2000 hours daily, with the camera initially facing sunrise in the east and the sun then moves around through the south to the west for sunset, so it gets pretty hot in the car when it is parked up.

The only issue I have had is occasionally it will go into standby, but a power off, wait a few seconds and power on again seems to fix that.

I don't know the cause of the overheat/burning plastic was, maybe a dodgy unit once in a while..????
