What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

The Mini 0801 - Tiny 1080p GPS Car Camera with an LCD Screen

UPDATE 2014 - be sure to look at the New Improved 0803 Model HERE.

I finally have an answer for the people who ask me which Dashcam I use…. it's this one.

Up until this point whenever I finished reviewing a car camera, I removed it from my car and boxed it up again. This is the first camera that's earned a permanant place on my windscreen.

There are a couple of reasons for this - firstly one thing that shouldn't be underestimated is the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor). I may be perfectly happy to live with a big piece of electronics hanging from the windscreen - but it's not completely down to me. The truth is though that I'm just as unhappy with anything messing up the car, however another more important concern is theft. Leaving an expensive device like a BlackVue camera in the windscreen is just not a good idea. To the average drug addict looking in car windows for something  to fund his next fix, you may as well have just left £50 on the passenger seat. However I'll be damned if I'm going to install and remove a camera every time I go for a short drive to the shops, I know that after a while I would get fed up doing it and leave it under a seat, and of course that's when something would happen.

However all those concerns are behind me because I've finally got a small car camera that appears to perform as well as any of the large devices that I've tried but that can be discretely mounted in a car and forgotten about.

Just prior to this camera's arrival I was thinking about how to permanently install the Mobius camera in my car and I still think that this would be a good alternative option if you can find some way to mount it, but I find that the design of the Mini 0801 fits better with my requirements.

@ Russ331

Yeah, bit pricey and only 720p but reliability is why i still have it. To be honest, when i got it, it kept crashing and falling off my dash, so i kept on searching for another camera...

...turns out it was the memory card that kept making it crash. Unfortunately the falling off the windscreen is a common occurrence i have found not matter what cam it is (the 300 isnt that heavy). Though a good wipe with a cloth helps, but im dreading winter and moist windscreens. :-( Ive become a sort of ninja as without having to look I can catch a car cam in one hand as it falls off the screen like a sixth sense.

I have had about 5 in my time, so am quite well up on the subject. But I first came here and watched Matt's videos before making any choices. Thats the rule. lol

@Russ331, Thanks for the info, I'll give Aliexpress a try.

First close call filmed with my new mini 0801 tonight. Quality is prette good I think.

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPhilippe

@Philippe, What firmware are you running? I'm glad you missed that near chain of events. I find myself driving safer knowing I'm constantly filming. Not a bad video especial with zero street lights in the mix. P.S. baba booey, Howard Stern rules too! :-)

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJazJon

I'm on 03092013, yes I'm happy with the night shot, even with a car facing me in the dark, the contrast stay fine and the lens has no blur at all

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPhilippe

That video footage in the dark confirms to me the quality of the 0801 at night. Its about half as good as the Mobius at night with WDR on.

Good enough, but the question I was looking to be answered.

Glad you missed the incident.

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKeith

I have two mobius and they are not as good at night, to me the cashcam right now is the DR32, but too big. The mini is second and the mobius is third, mostly because of it's confusing operation and multiple drivers problems that I have with my win8 Laptop, the camera always refuse to connect to the same port twice.

Tonight, I'm going on a drive with all 3 camera to compare and will post a video tomorow to show the difference, might also include some keychain camera if I find them.

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPhlippe

Thanks very much for doing this 3 cam test. I look forward to seeing the results.

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterruss331

Tell me the settings you guys would me to set all 3 cams at and I will do a day and a night drive with all 3 cams on at the same time. I will post the video tomorow, if I figure out how to work with iMovie fast enough as I never did anything more than cropping and stitching vides with it. Or if someone can suggest a video software to me under 200$$ I would maybe buy it, I want to start playing with that this year.

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPhlippe

Thats windows 8 not the mobius. The 0801 has had just as many firmware updates and has a fatal lock up with a full memory card in one of the latest firware updates. Poor JazJon has a video on youtube showing this.

When you do the testing, can you put the WDR on for the Mobius please.

Ive seen a report of a DR42, anyone know if this is a fake or the next generation version?

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKeith

@Philippe, is it possible to try the cameras in a very dark area (no street lighting) at some point? I find its a good test to see how the cameras work with just the headlights.

Have fun! Dont use a sat nav as well or you may not have anywhere to see where you are going! lol

Standard settings with wdr on if possible.

That DR42 is out now, search on youtube for it. I dont know if its by the same people though. Look pretty much the same as the 32.

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMike Newton

I just set one mobius with WDR on and the other one with WDR off, as I have two, might as well test both mode. The setting are as follow for both, except for the WDR. BTW it's the first time I use the .txt to configure the cam and it's better than the msetup.exe by far.

No absolutely no point testing the Mobi with WDR off, its common knowledge that its not a s good and should be used at night.
Its like testing you car in the dark without headlights. SO I wouldn't bother.

Thanks for your efforts though.

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKeith

What firmware are you using?

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKeith

I am on firmware 0.35 on both, I can't change this since they are refusing to connect to my windows laptop anymore, no matter what I do, they keep going into charging mode as soon as I plug them and windows tell me that an un-recognize device is attach.

The dr32 I don't know the firmware, it's not showing in the menu, and the mini is on 09032013

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPhilippe

@Philippe, If you have a card reader you can pop that onto your computer and update that way. The RC forum tell you how.

I think we are on firmware 0.47 now, there has been lots of updates including the white balance that will probably favor night driving and its performance compared to the quite old firmware you have. Thats the firmware I got mine with when i bought it.

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMike Newton

Trying that right now, no point on doing a side-by side test with outdated firmware I guess.

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPhlippe

@Philippe I think you're behind in my posts on dashcamtalk. I said 20130905 was unstable days ago, 20130903 is rock solid and is confirmed the shipping version from several other people. It's rock solid in 20130903. (I'm happy) The 0905 firmware didn't even come from eprance or givoe so not surprised it had issues. The 0801 is made at two different factories. But yeah I'm very satisfied with the 0801! It's the best bang for the back. It blends in perfectly behind my mirror. You can't see it at all while driving of if someone was talking to me through the window. It doesn't stand out at all from the outside. I trust leaving mine there full time. This will hold me over until the stealthy dual camera Jokiin system comes out at some point.

P.S. if you want the latest Beta that works with Registrator .MOV firmwares you can get it here.
(until the real 5.3 is released)

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJazJon

If anobody has special request for the test, it's now or never, I was thinking of doing a couple of small clips showing the following;

-Day city low speed driving
-Night city low speed driving with light posts

-Day 60MPH driving
-Night 60 MPH driving, no lamp post, high beam and low-beam test

-Day entering my dark indoor garage, parking the car to see still footage (to test ambiant light adjustment)
-Night entering the garage with incadescent ligth and parking the car for still footage

-Day unpaved bumpy road with parked footage
-Night unpaved bumpy road with parked footage, low beam-high beam and light off test

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPhlippe

Phlippe is using the 20130903 according to his post. So im sure he is aware the 20130905 is a write off.

Can you give us all the heads up when jokiin shows us the goods? lol

Thanks Phlippe for your efforts. Much appreciated.

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMike Newton

I just came back from filming and I have major problems with the mobius. They are now saving only the last clip. I spent 1 hour driving and I lost everything except the last 3 minutes. I updated to the latest firmware just before going, look like it broke something.

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPhilippe

@ Philippe

Oh dear, is that on both of them?

I think they mention on the RC forums that you can revive them quite easily. See my earlier link.

Most people use the GUI interface and its quite easy. Obviously I know you cant connect to your PC because you have windows 8.

Sorry to hear that you wasted an hour. Hopefully an easy fix.

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMike Newton

I think it's power related, one mobius that was plug by itself did ok and the other one that was sharing a dual usb power cable with the dr32 did not work, and I now realize that the dr32 made choppy video. So tonight I will shot my night clips with 3 cams (only have 3 separate usb power cable). I will have The dr32, the mobius with wdr and the mini 0801. And I will do another run for the day videos tomorrow, too bad, the conditions were perfect today and got some great fall scene with multi-colors threes. BTW, be warn that people look at you like you are a weirdo when you drive around with 4 cameras in the windshield!

Here's the picture of the setup in my suv

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPhilippe

Good news if its power rather than firmware.

The mobius needs at least 1amp to run, just to its self. Thats how my first one went out (possibly or heat, cant be sure).

I ran a dual USB port car lighter charger, but didnt realise that each socket stating it was 1amp each was actually shared over each port. So I only was giving it half that it required. Something about micro discharges by the battery if it is any lower than that and it fires the battery's life span.

Great picture. If you have an accident, it will be well documented. On the bad side, it may be that you cant see where you are going.

I just got my new Aliexpress-Givoe Mini 0801+GPS+8GB Internal today.

No more dead/stuck pixals. (100% clean CMOS censor)

Firmware came with 20130903 (same 12.5Mbps 102MB per 1 minute)

Audio is BETTER/Cleaner (no more rattle/static when driving over bumping roads) I think they improved the mic slightly.

It came set to the wrong language so be prepared to hunt up down in the menu blindly until you figure it out lol.

I used floss to remove my old base, and a razor blade + Goo-Gone to remove the residue.
I also removed the GRAY double stick tape that comes on the new base and used m own BLACK doublestick tape instead.
(looks much better from the outside, total black profile)

The internal 8GB is cool, if I eject my 32GB microSD card it automatically starts recording on the internal 8GB card.
In the playback section you can copy a file from one card to the other card.
You can pick which card is recorded to by default on the main menu. They use the words "inner card" and "outer card"

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJazJon

I've got my mini 0801 yesterday, but I am left wondering if I received a copy of the real one or if it the real one. The one I got yesterday only have 2 cables. one with the mini to standard USB cable and the power cable that pug into the car. then there is no way to tell if the unit that the camera must be pug into is the GPS or not. There should have been a way to tell them apart by looking at them. Will I just will have to wait until l I get it set up then I know.

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAsborn

If the base has a slight (very slight) weight to it, it's GPS.
If it feels hallow and super light it's the non GPS.

If it's GPS, when you plug it in you'll see the icon of a GPS Satellite in the upper right.

You'll see .LOG files generated in the GPS folder of the microSD card

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJazJon

@ Jazjon, thank you I will check for those thing. I just need to get the micro SD card now and get it set up.

September 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAsborn

I have a first video of the mobius vs mini 0801 test up on youtube. The first video is daytime and it will be clickable and will link to full screen untouched 1080p sample of each camera soon, but my internet is very slow and it took 6 hours to upload this 1gb video, so check back on this channel later this week for night test and more, I will not post update here cause I don't want to hijack or spam this comment section. This is not as good as I wanted to do first but my macbook is slower to render video than I was expecting, so no crazy montage.

September 21, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterphilippe

Hallo fellow readers,
A have a question: did anyone of you come across another mounting system for this camera. The thing is I would like to use it for recording while travelling in a rented car abroad. Using the 3M adhesive would not work in such situation.

I hope someone has a solution!
