What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

UK & US LINKS & PRICES BELOW

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

SPECIAL DASHCAM CARDS

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for dashcams...here's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

The Mini 0801 - Tiny 1080p GPS Car Camera with an LCD Screen

UPDATE 2014 - be sure to look at the New Improved 0803 Model HERE.

I finally have an answer for the people who ask me which Dashcam I use…. it's this one.

Up until this point whenever I finished reviewing a car camera, I removed it from my car and boxed it up again. This is the first camera that's earned a permanant place on my windscreen.

There are a couple of reasons for this - firstly one thing that shouldn't be underestimated is the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor). I may be perfectly happy to live with a big piece of electronics hanging from the windscreen - but it's not completely down to me. The truth is though that I'm just as unhappy with anything messing up the car, however another more important concern is theft. Leaving an expensive device like a BlackVue camera in the windscreen is just not a good idea. To the average drug addict looking in car windows for something  to fund his next fix, you may as well have just left £50 on the passenger seat. However I'll be damned if I'm going to install and remove a camera every time I go for a short drive to the shops, I know that after a while I would get fed up doing it and leave it under a seat, and of course that's when something would happen.

However all those concerns are behind me because I've finally got a small car camera that appears to perform as well as any of the large devices that I've tried but that can be discretely mounted in a car and forgotten about.

Just prior to this camera's arrival I was thinking about how to permanently install the Mobius camera in my car and I still think that this would be a good alternative option if you can find some way to mount it, but I find that the design of the Mini 0801 fits better with my requirements.

@Wim,

Try googling 3M Dual Lock. This might be a suitable alternative to the supplied adhesive tape.

September 21, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterruss331

@Wim
If you peal off the 3M double stick tape that comes on the base, you will have a smooth plastic surface.
You could try a double suction cup like one of these. ($1.70 USD, free shipping)
http://dx.com/p/mini-double-sided-suction-cup-silicone-pad-for-mobile-phone-black-114639
http://dx.com/p/dual-head-silicone-suction-cup-stand-for-iphone-ipad-more-black-222111
http://dx.com/s/double+suction+cup
Also search eBay for Double Suction Cup (and sort by lowest price first)

Like russ331 said you can also use Dual Lock (which is like Velcro 2.0) but than you'll still have to remove the windows part.
(maybe a combination of the two?)

September 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJazJon

@Wim, here's another option Niko proposed.
http://dashcamtalk.com/forum/index.php?threads/smallest-ambarella-car-dvr-a-k-a-mini-0801.1001/page-33#post-26537

"Suction mount should be with quick and easy mount / dismount.
I would use dod ls300w type suction mount. File down tip from mount that goes into dash camera body to have flat surface on which 0801 bracket could mounted with 3M double sided tape."

My V1000GS died a few months ago and have been waiting for a fitting replacement, thanks Techmoan, just placed my order for this one and eagerly awaiting its arrival. Sadly they appear to be out of stock of the GPS device. Thanks for a great review as always and keep up the good unbiased no punches reviews, love it.

I am hoping that someone can help me here with the Mini 0801. After I set up setting the mini 0801 Friday I did some video test in the house and the video play back was playing smooth with out any jerking and the sound was also smooth. I install it in the car today Sunday morning and drive for about 15 or so minutes. After getting back home, I remove it from the car and play the clips on the PC and I was very disappointed with the play back jerkiness in the video and also the audio I was also disappointed after doing again a test in the house, and changing some of the video quality settings along with try it with out the audio, but the same jerkiness. I

I have an 32GB class 10 card in it. it was recording in1080 and 720p and the firmware is 2013090 and the last digit seem to be a 5 or a 3 if it not S. Also how do you get into the settings to display your seed when you want (on and off) and how do you show the GPS read out on the screen. Thank for nay help anyone can offer.

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAsborn

Sorry for the few typo error. I was asking how to get into the settings to display your speed when you want (on and off). for some reason I can not find the that setting and the GPS settings.

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAsborn

another question:

has anyone already seen any reliable review on new devices based upon the Ambarella A7LA chipset? And the same question for a device called HD-22 apparently made by Transfluent?

Has our Technical Conscience something in planning?

Look forward to any news.

Regards,

Wim

@asborn
Set the stamp to "car" and that displays speed. I prefer to leave all stamps off though and use RegistratorViewer (Windows only) to see GPS info and add as subtitle if it's something I upload to youtube. (let's you choose font, location, size and MPH too then.
When you said "t was recording in1080 and 720p" It can't record both an once. Set it to 1080P and leave it there. 720P is useless. If you're in the USA pick 60Htz, NTSC. It might not be jerky either it could be your PC. Try using VLC Player (free app) Also try using RegistratorViewer
http://www.registratorviewer.com/index_en.html

@Win All the experts are on DashCamTalk.com talking about the A7LA. Keep an eye out for user Jokiin. He's coming out with new camrea's soon.

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJazJon

Hi, can anyone post the electronic specs for this camera please? Thanks

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterThomas Gatt

Thank Jazjon. for helping with those setting for the Mini 0801. I had in on 50 hertz and the word car, I did not know that was the setting to turn speed on and off. and you are also right it was the PC. At the time of the actual viewing of the test drive footage the PC was was using a lot of memory for some back ground programs. My 30 minutes commute to work, and my 30 minutes commute back home from work, the videos play back smooth. I was very surprise by the audio quality I could here the radio very clearly. One more surprise I received is that at the 3g sitting for the G force sensors did not record none of the bumps in my commute as event. I must say I am very please and very satisfied with this unit for such a low prize. I will keep it until I find a unite that you hide in the trunk or under the seat and work with two came, but must have a great review. Thank again for the help.

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAsborn

@Jazjon, I forgot to ask, is there a web site you that you can find firmware update for the Mini 0801? and if so, how do you update the firmware if there is a firmware update?

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAsborn

Is there an option to turn off the LCD display or is it always on?

Thanks.

September 25, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCowmissing

The screen auto shut off by itself, but the blue led is very bright and keep flashing while recording, you might have to mask it with a sharpie

September 25, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterYoseph

Yoseph, Thank you for the information. I'm looking at purchasing the one with the GPS option. I'm lost with all the options, can someone explain the run down and purchase options? Are there just two models one with a GPS and one with out? I was looking around and I see a few more option that some websites are selling. Thank you.

September 25, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCowmissing

@Cowmissing

If you're in the UK then think carefully about where you buy from.

The feedback to Techmoan's 0801 video on the YouTube site indicates that 4 people in the UK have been hit with >£20 import duty fees ... a nasty surprise for the unwary.

September 25, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterruss331

Yes, I saw a 15% GST fee. What is that? No, I'm in the USA. Any suggestions on where I can purchase this from? Even on eBay they are all coming from "China".

September 25, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCowmissing

If I were in the USA, I'd probably buy through Amazon, in which case the seller is E-Prance.

September 25, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterruss331

I have to warn people who want to buy through the "Off the Net" shop. I ordered my mini 0801 on 08.09.2013 and paid full. Until this days nothing arrived. Send many emails to them, leave messages on phone and no one replied to me. My status shows shipped, but the tracking No. is a fake. The New Zealand Post claimed the tracking No. as invalid. I opened criminal complaint for credit card fraud against "Off the Net". So be warned and do not orderyour cam through this terrible shop. NO CUSTOMER SERVICE IS ALSO A CUSTOMER SERVICE - The law with catch you.

September 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterWiliam

I don't know this shop (and can't find it on google) but any international order can take up to 6 weeks to arrive and it's not the seller fault. I think you are a little quick on the gun.

September 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterYoseph

I ordered my on ebay. It take 12 days to from China to NY. It is working very well.

September 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAsborn

@Yoseph

If a seller writes shipped than I must be able to track my order!
Within 14 days no reply to 10 emails, 2 phone calls, 2 opened cases - Normal? - No way
Shown tracking number is a fake, verified by NZ Post

I think I shoot to slow with this bastards

I have tint a UV tint I installed on my front window which greatly reduces heat. I can't put an adhesive on it. You think it's okay to put on my mirror? I currently have the mirror mounted DVR and I have to put silly putty to stop my mirror from drooping down because the DVR mirror is too heavy. It's one of the ones you first reviewed.

Wondering if this is also heavy that it'd maky my mirror droop down.

September 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPenelli

@Wiliam

Your post of 26 September refers. Please see comment of 27 September by Richard Radon on the YouTube site under the Techmoan video for the Mini 0801.

Looks like people should be wary of this 'Off The Net' site.

September 27, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterruss331

Hi all. I really need some technical help, I and am hoping them someone here will be able to help me. I have my Mini 0801 for a week know, but for the pass two days I notice it started to give problem. when I start the car it will start recording, but after a few seconds or a few minutes it will stop recording and the LED will be solid red or blue. I try unplugging it from the car turn it off and restart it , but this don't always work. Do anyone have any idea what is the problem and how to fix it?

September 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAsborn

@Asborn

I have the same problem and just posted a few troubleshooting ideas. It seems to be a common issue and we need to figure out the pattern/solution

http://forum.dashcamtalk.com/index.php?threads/smallest-ambarella-car-dvr-a-k-a-mini-0801.1001/page-36#post-27070

September 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJazJon

Ok thank I am checking it out. I also did the same thing you did, I format the card in the Mini 0801, when the traffic light was read and in work after that up to my 50 mini drive. On returning from my destination it work for part of the way. I unplug it then turn it off and plug it back up and it work again. So there is some issues that really is going on with it. Next week Friday I will buy a new card of a lower class and see how that work.

September 28, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAsborn

I noticed several people posting complaints about slow delivery and inability to track shipment. The China Post Air Mail tracking is worthless. For my order, tracking showed "No Result" although the Ali Express web site said tracking would be available in 2-3 days. At 8-9 days, still no China Post Air Mail tracking result.

Suddenly on day 9, Alibaba "My AliExpress" page (without going to outside tracking site) showed "Arrival Scan" and "Out for Delivery". The US Postal Service made the delivery; certified mail, signature was required. There was also 7 days delay between order placement and emailed shipping notification. I imagine most of these sellers shipping from China are using the same China Post Air Mail service. The lack of visibility is frustrating, but outside the control of the seller.

My camera from Givoe worked for less than a day. It worked fine after I unpacked it and charged the battery the first evening. I tried recording and the various menus. Worked fine. Today, the LCD is screwed up. Image is shifted to right side of LCD and left side shows bars. The shifted visible image fragment is wrong resolution, as if zoomed in.. No apparent reset button.

Contacting Givoe about getting a replacement. Gary

September 28, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGary C

Gary -- take a look at the user manual -- its right at the bottom of the box, you may have missed it.
A long press on the big button on the end is reset - hopefully that will fix your problem!

Mine has FW version 20130903 -- there is no "Beep" menu entry.
Anyone know how to get rid of the annoying sound effects?

September 28, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip

@Philip
The Beep Control was removed when they added .MOV recording capability. I was told it's being re-introduced in a future firmware. They have a limited amount of memory in which to fit GUI options. For more details read through the last several weeks worth of this thread:

http://forum.dashcamtalk.com/index.php?threads/smallest-ambarella-car-dvr-a-k-a-mini-0801.1001/

Firmware 20130924 is being tested at this time, but no released yet.

P.S. My delivery took awhile too but I expected as much. If you need the camera right away upgrade your shipping to anything other than the free China Post. You get what you pay for basically even with shipping.
