What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

The Mini 0801 - Tiny 1080p GPS Car Camera with an LCD Screen

UPDATE 2014 - be sure to look at the New Improved 0803 Model HERE.

I finally have an answer for the people who ask me which Dashcam I use…. it's this one.

Up until this point whenever I finished reviewing a car camera, I removed it from my car and boxed it up again. This is the first camera that's earned a permanant place on my windscreen.

There are a couple of reasons for this - firstly one thing that shouldn't be underestimated is the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor). I may be perfectly happy to live with a big piece of electronics hanging from the windscreen - but it's not completely down to me. The truth is though that I'm just as unhappy with anything messing up the car, however another more important concern is theft. Leaving an expensive device like a BlackVue camera in the windscreen is just not a good idea. To the average drug addict looking in car windows for something  to fund his next fix, you may as well have just left £50 on the passenger seat. However I'll be damned if I'm going to install and remove a camera every time I go for a short drive to the shops, I know that after a while I would get fed up doing it and leave it under a seat, and of course that's when something would happen.

However all those concerns are behind me because I've finally got a small car camera that appears to perform as well as any of the large devices that I've tried but that can be discretely mounted in a car and forgotten about.

Just prior to this camera's arrival I was thinking about how to permanently install the Mobius camera in my car and I still think that this would be a good alternative option if you can find some way to mount it, but I find that the design of the Mini 0801 fits better with my requirements.

A quote from the dashcamtalk summary:

Should I Purchase?

This camera is quite similar to a GS1000 in a smaller, more discreet package.  If you are looking for a 1080p discreet camera with a screen and GPS, this is one of the best options available.  Just be sure you are OK with the video quality at night.

If you don’t need the screen and GPS and are looking for slightly better video quality, consider the Mobius (assuming overheating issues are not commonplace).  Overall the Mini 0801 is a good value for the money.

I have a mobius and was considering this as I dont want to leave the Mobius in the car. but i have it on a sucker mount that is east to take on and off, its just if it overheated in the weather.

Im not sure if this 0801 would stand being left in a car in high temps or cold weather either though.

Also this from DASHCAMTALK in the SUMMARY of the 08014 worried me:
"Discreet, small, GPS and reasonably priced. Video quality is the biggest drawback. "

So it doesnt sound all that, maybe you trade off how discrete it is for worse picture then.

If I get the 8GB version, do I still need to buy a micro SD card? I'm a bit unsure because the memory is quoted as "8GB for backup", so I'm not sure if it can be used for regular recording.

@ David Frankland

According to the Aliexpress seller, the camera can record to the internal memory as well.

@Andras: It looks like the one with builtin 8GB and GPS is exactly what I want then. Thanks.

On the strength of your review, I've just ordered from the New Zealand seller. They're out of the GPS module, but that's no great loss. I had some difficulty making the order - their website kept erroring - but they fixed it and it's on its way.

Received mine from ebay seller e-prance. It was already updated to the firmware 09032013 (even if I ordered the cam on august 28). I think it's the best one I owned to date. (GS1000, V2000GS, DR32, Mobius).

The only strange thing is that I only have sound from the right speaker on my computer when playing back files. I would have love a left-right pivot adjustment cause I always used my cam close to the B-pillar instead of near the mirror and it's not possible with this mount. The V2000GS had a similar mount but allowed just enough adjustment for that.

Also, would be great if a dash cam come out with 64GB card support. 32 is a little short for someone like me who often make more than 1200km in a single drive and would like to keep the whole trip on the card.

Firmware 09032013 is stable
Don't try 09052013 (problems once card is full) I downgraded back to 0903 and I'm happy again.
