What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

The Mini 0801 - Tiny 1080p GPS Car Camera with an LCD Screen

UPDATE 2014 - be sure to look at the New Improved 0803 Model HERE.

I finally have an answer for the people who ask me which Dashcam I use…. it's this one.

Up until this point whenever I finished reviewing a car camera, I removed it from my car and boxed it up again. This is the first camera that's earned a permanant place on my windscreen.

There are a couple of reasons for this - firstly one thing that shouldn't be underestimated is the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor). I may be perfectly happy to live with a big piece of electronics hanging from the windscreen - but it's not completely down to me. The truth is though that I'm just as unhappy with anything messing up the car, however another more important concern is theft. Leaving an expensive device like a BlackVue camera in the windscreen is just not a good idea. To the average drug addict looking in car windows for something  to fund his next fix, you may as well have just left £50 on the passenger seat. However I'll be damned if I'm going to install and remove a camera every time I go for a short drive to the shops, I know that after a while I would get fed up doing it and leave it under a seat, and of course that's when something would happen.

However all those concerns are behind me because I've finally got a small car camera that appears to perform as well as any of the large devices that I've tried but that can be discretely mounted in a car and forgotten about.

Just prior to this camera's arrival I was thinking about how to permanently install the Mobius camera in my car and I still think that this would be a good alternative option if you can find some way to mount it, but I find that the design of the Mini 0801 fits better with my requirements.

Hey guys,

I just received my camera today, and on the CD there were two applications: SPEED_UNIT_KM and SPEED_UNIT_MP. Probably the second one shows the speed in MPH. The problem is that I can't read the discs, the optical drives just sound like a passing by train.

You can download both apps here on the FAQ page.

You're better off using Registrator Viewer though. (way more options)

Thanks for the links. I contacted givoe for the issue and they sent me the files in like 3 minutes. So great experience with them and I can only recommend them if anybody wants to buy the camera without a headache.

October 15, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAndras

I use Registrator Viewer as Jazjon recommended, but the disk that come with my mini 1801 do not work on my windows 7 PC, the version download from the link also do not work on my PC. I tray compatibility mode, but still do not work. So I will take to Registrator Viewer it work well.

Anybody know any long term issues with this unit? Overheating, system failure, ect..?

October 16, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJacob

There is too much history to reply in one paragraph. You can read all about it here:

@Matt: Thanks for your efforts and reviews - much appreciated! Like many here at Techmoan, I want a fit-and-forget "flight recorder" that's as inconspicuous as possible, ideally invisible, behind the RVM. Based on your sensible review, the Mini 0801 seems to fit my needs best (mainly stealth and with quality video), and I've pretty much settled on getting two or three.

@Mike Newton: Did you find a supplier that'll ship to SA? Any suggestions?

@People In Hot Places (eg TX/AZ): Summers here in the Karoo are very hot, so I need something that will survive high temps. Is the Mini 0801 up to the job?

October 17, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterArthur Williamson

Where can I find a Mini-B 5 pin male to female cable? The power cable is not long enough and I'm having a hard time running it to my camera. Also, I purchased a Class 10 Micro SD card, but the manual says to use a Class 4 or higher, but not a Class 10. Has any one had any problems with using a Class 10? Thank you.

October 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCowmissing

Read through the comments here, I'll post again though. Avoid class 10 cards or your camera will shut down after the card is full and recycle begins. The best card is the Samsung Class 6 card. (perfect middle ground)

More info on 0801 here:

October 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJazJon

Thank you for the information. This is my first car camera and I'm excited to make this work.

October 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCowmissing

MPH? I'm still looking to see how I can change the KMH to MPH. Was this ever resolved? Thanks!

October 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCowmissing

The 0801 was built to a price point so they used the absolute lowest cost parts on certain things. I asked and was told the firmware has limited space and the factory said they didn't have room to add MPH.

It's better to leave ALL stamps off, and then add the parts you want via RegistratorViewer. It has MPH as an option.
(even creates a subtitle file you can upload to youtube etc)

October 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJazJon

Thank you for that. Also, I noticed that the audio on my 0801 records on only one channel (left) and in the recording there's a constant "beeping and/or ringing" sound. Do you guys have this on yours? It gets annoying and I'm trying to figure out if that's normal or I have a bad unit. Thank you.

You will need to turn up the volume as it's low.

Ordered a Mini 0801 from JooVuu and have now had to open a Paypal dispute to try and get my money back. This company claims that I didn't place an order yet took my payment! They told me through their support system that it was their fault and promised my order would be dispatched yesterday 19/10/2013 with a message telling me so on their ticket system plus an email. Needless to say neither has happened and my tickets are now being ignored.

I really didn't think companies as bad as this existed any more. Hopefully they won't last much longer. Order from somewhere else or be prepared to lose your money!

Their emails are directed straight to spam on gmail...I wonder why!

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJerry

@Jerry, That doesn't sound at all like JooVuu. They are very active and responsive on DashCamTalk.

Here is their Vendor thread.

Try sending them a PM.

I ordered my mini DVR on 16th September on ebay (eprance). To date I am still waiting for the item!! They replied and said that it is on the way without any issues but don't you think this is taking too much now? I live in Malta.

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterThomas Gatt

@Thomas Gatt

eBay "eprance" and "e-prance" are two different stores.

e-prance is the better one of the two. (very quick communication)
One other guy complained about eprance (with out the hyphen) on dashcamtalk

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJazJon

Communication was always great... The waiting time is not. Anyone got screwed by eprance yet?

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJazJon

@ Jazjon

I received an email from Joovuu a few minutes after I posted the Paypal dispute. Still no answer in their support ticket system. According to this email there is a problem with my payment and so they cannot post my order until I have reviewed and fixed the order! The order reference number supplied in the email is not recognised on their site and when I log into my account it shows no orders, which is exactly what I was told by their support person.

So obviously I can't review an order that doesn't exist! The email seems to be an attempt to take the dispute out of Paypal and into email. Bit silly as I simply copy and paste whatever they send me into the dispute box on Paypal.

This does seem to be a ridiculous situation for a company to get itself into, either send me my order or refund my money! Simple!

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJerry

Jerry, if they have not received payment form Paypal you should be able to cancel the order. Is there a reason you can't you do that from your Paypal account?

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVoyager03

Thanks - looks like they're still one store - just different people. I don't really mind. All I need is the order to arrive in time. Will have to wait a bit more and then react accordingly. Thanks!

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterThomas Gatt

OK....refund received from Joovuu so I'm happy. Response on Paypal on a Sunday morning too.....pity it had to come to that and hopefully an isolated example. Just wanted to set the record straight.

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJerry

Jerry, you seem very quick to blame others for a problem that you (probably) created for yourself (for whatever reason).

What actually happened? Why did you not start with Paypal and work forward from there?

IME problems are pretty rare when buying (or selling) stuff through ebay, business sellers generally are professional, courteous and helpful. Problems come from buyers with unrealistic expectations - of 'free' international postage, a hiccup with a faulty individual item (usually a very cheap one) or a childish stamping of feet because they think they are the most important people in the world (this is often Americans, but there are Europeans who behave like that too).

If you start out with the expectation that things will work out and don't get shouty and bothered the moment you imagine the sky is falling on your head you tend to find they do work out! ;-)

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVoyager03

I've been following this on DashCam Talk for a while and as a result of all the different firmware versions and problems associated with them (including video-loop when card full), I sent Matt a msg on his original review video of this mini 0801. He stated that he hasn't had any problems with his since he's installed it when it was reviewed and it's still running fine. If I remember correctly his is a .TS format with the 20130617 firmware version and he uses a class 10 TF card. Maybe @Techmoan can chime in and confirm for you guys.

Seems to me like these mini0801 started acting up right after manufacturers/sellers started upgrading firmware to include .MOV format, among other things. I'm not aware of anybody running a .TS format one that has any problems with theirs, "video loop cycling" in particular.

I bought my Mobius from JooVuu. Credit card transaction. No problems at all. JooVuu don't deserve the criticism you're levelling against them.

I suggest you order again tomorrow. If you place an order on a Monday, they send you a 'freebie' ... In my case a suction mount.

Email them about tomorrow's offer. The offer code is probably still cheerupmonday, but check with them to be sure.

Shouty? Stamp my feet? I'm not quite sure why you would think that. As to what happened? Quite simple. I placed an order 10 days ago on Joovuu's site using Paypal to pay. I didn't receive any emails apart from the Paypal receipt. Due to not receiving anything from Joovuu regarding my order or shipping details etc I raised a ticket about this through their support system. I then discovered an email from them in my spam box. Gmail automatically classes emails from Joovuu as spam.

No matter I thought, the person I spoke to through the ticket system explained what had happened, was extremely helpful and promised shipping by Saturday 19/10/2013 plus an email and response through the ticket system. That person also suggested I raise a dispute with Paypal if it made me feel better about the order. The suggestion of raising of a dispute with Paypal was made first by Joovuu and not by me. I told this person that I was quite happy to wait for my order now it had been sorted out and would not raise a dispute with Paypal provided I received the confirmation email about shipping. The 19th came and went, no email and no responses through their ticket system so now I raised a dispute with Paypal. I have screenshots of the ticket.

A few minutes after raising the dispute I got an email from Joovuu claiming that I had ordered the camera but hadn't paid for it. Completely opposite to what I had been told through their ticket system. Then through the Paypal dispute system Joovuu agreed to a full refund.

Something went badly wrong with Joovuu's order system and while I now think this was a one off it was the total lack of follow up to the promises made to me through their ticket system that caused me to raise a dispute with Paypal. No other reason.

I also posted that I had received a full refund as soon as I got it. As I stated earlier I wanted to set the record straight and after posting about my problem I also made sure to post that it had been resolved.

So no stamping of feet and no shouty either!

Time to eat humble pie; I would like to apologize to Off The Net and Techmoan for my outburst yesterday which stemmed originally from the lack of support by Off The Net. Seems all is now resolved now and looking forward to testing my new cam, thank you.

Hi, when this is fitted to the car on a switched live, does the screen always come on when you switch on the ignition? Is the screen always on whilst recording?

October 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJack

Hi Techmoan,
Can I ask you from your experience with all these dash cams where they have ball jointed mount that attaches to suction cups or flat surface mounted one where you use double sided tapes? Do they all the same size ball joint so that it can be interchangeable?

I'm trying to figure out if let say I use this mount:

Dismatle it so the ball joints part come off and than grab the ball joint from this Dash Cam and put it together and thus you have a non suction cup mounted version which is shorter.

This is the Dash Cam I was referring to:

Thanks in advance for any advice or help you can provide
