What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

SPECIAL DASHCAM CARDS

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for dashcams...here's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

The A118 / B40 Wedge Dashcam Review

This camera has been on the market for quite a few months however I've only recently installed one in my car and I now plan to keep it there until either it stops working or something better comes along.

I must reiterate that this is a budget model and I really have have no idea how long it will continue to work for. I've received feedback that some cameras I've reviewed and rated highly like the 0803 can have short life spans especially in hot environments.

Given that I'm always testing a different model and I don't live in a hot part of the world, I just can't test a camera's long term relibility in a sunbaked car.  No one should expect a budget camera ito last as long as a premium model (with a two year warranty) but if your budget is limited and you want to know more about a particular device from people who have first hand experience of using it, I'd recommend looking through the forum on Dashcamtalk.

DOWNLOADABLE CLIPS

I have uploaded the sample clips here. Do not stream these as this downgrades the quality - you need to download the clips and then play them back from your computer to see their true original quality.

I will probably hard-wire it in. The car has a roof console above the rearview mirror and I can probably obtain current from the reading lamps or wires to the light/rain sensors. Of course I must not forget to use a 12v to 5v stepdown converter or I will fry the camera as others have done for not using an adapter.

Going to buy the updated capacitor version of A118. Mainly due to its size and capability of mounting it behind the black dots on the top of the windscreen leaving just the lens visible.
A couple of questions a) will the mount damage the dots on windscreen and b) will it be easy to remove using your dental tape method, again without removing the dots.

LIke a couple of people on your Youtube comments, I'm having problems with the emergency/save file button. Those people were having trouble with it only saving a file after the event of interest. In my case it doesn't appear to do anything.

Can anyone comment on whether this button is meant to put a file in a different folder or just put a read-only flag. Mine's doing neither but I wonder whether there's a hidden folder or something.

Thanks
Stuart

any marked files will be moved to the RO folder (read only) if the screen is off at the time you'd need to press it twice, once to wake the screen up, again to save the file, or once only if the screen is on at the time, you'll see the lock icon on screen when you do this

Hi Matt
I finally found a Uk agent who is selling the Blackvue 650 at a realistic price but they say the cam is not suitable for cars with DAB radio. Reading forums on this subject it would appear many cams cause RFI/ EMI interference which in a modern high tech car could have consequences way above DAB. I have DAB but could live FM but I also have sensors in the windscreen close to where a cam would be mounted. On my motorhome my wireless reversing camera knocks out the FM ( not a problem for me ) but I I never managed to cure it despite trying very hard.
have you found any problems with the cameras you have tested or come to any answers about such interference?

March 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterIan

@jokin

Thanks for that. I didn't realise I needed to press twice. I'll give it a go.

Hey Techmoan, in the video you mentioned getting some polarization film for this dash cam. I was wondering what your results were and where you bought your stuff if it did alright. I'm looking at getting some polarization film to cover the lense as I'm getting HORRIBLE reflections due to the angle my windshield and dash are at to each other.

March 17, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterDreadJak

I got a lens but it was too big so I gave up on the idea.

Hi Matt, thanks again for your Testing & comments etc on various cam's, I have just bought a A118.B40 the capacitor model and a Gps module off foxoffer have tested the cam on its own in the car hard wired, off Foxoffer ,works great but playback picture isnt as good as my Sjcam sj4000, perhaps I have not set the resolution correct , ? not used the gps yet will will nip out now and connect.

March 21, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterscaniaman

Back again, well I coupled the GPS into my A118 dash cam and have been on a drive, on return managed to get it to playback via the registratorviewer App (great) records the speed on the graff, and the car shows on the map like a satnav, the only fault I have is I have no speedometer as it shows on the viewer only on the graff ,The main fault i have it shows the wrong date and 1 hr out, cant fathom out how to correct this anybody know a fix .

March 23, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterscaniaman

Speed will show in Registrator Viewer but not in the video, this is normal, if its summertime where you are and daylight savings time is used you need to set the timezone forward one hour from your normal zone

If the date is showing as 2014 rather than 2015 you need a firmware update to correct this

If you go to www.streetguardian.info and go to the support page you can download the user manual from the branded version of this camera (SG9665GM) and profile setting for Registrator Viewer, won't exactly match your model but will get you most of the way there

March 23, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterjokiin

thanks jokiin, Have just downloaded the manual off street guardion most the same as the one supplied from foxoffer with the A118 apart from a couple of things like press for 5 minutes instead of 5 seconds ,and press the down button which is the mic button i think on my A118 regarding the date it was just a month out saying 24/02/2015 when playing back on the laptop using the sd adapter instead of 24/03/2015 which is the date today ps when i played back this time the speedo part worked on registratorviewer so ok that way, when checked on the A118 the gps was in the off position so will see if ok next time out. cheers TB

March 24, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterscaniaman

Back again with results of my A118 capacitor model / hardwired /and now with GPS all from foxoffer, everything works OK , good video on 1080, the GPS is brilliant (bit like a satnav) seeing where you have been and the speedo works fine, the only fault when a playback on the laptop one or 2 files go missing, say playback 001- 002 then goes to 005 (where did 003 and 4 go and not in the file list? sometimes it dosnt switch on record till you get some distance down the road the video comes on, but on playback but no gps speed of mileage etc recorded, anybody else had problems ? apart from that great.

March 28, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterscaniaman

I hard wired everything in, sometimes when I switch the ignition on the system doesn't fire up so I switch it off and on again and no problem. GPS is brilliant, actually I am going to turn the sound recording off, language not always as flattering as it might be. So, no complaints for the price of peanuts here is a system that works brilliantly.

March 28, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterchris b

@scaniaman check the RO folder on the card for your missing files, for the not switching on contact Foxoffer and they'll send you out a replacement power adapter, there were some faulty ones in the initial batch

@chris b there's a firmware update that should sort your intermittent starting issue, if it's not starting during cold weather hit your seller up for the replacement adapter

March 30, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterjokiin

Hi Joklin, Thanks for reply, regarding power adapter I am using a hard wire system (from foxoffer) ps what is the ro files ? is it just the files which you click on to watch, regarding the cam , when i set off it records as the red light flashes on/off and all seems to be ok but sometimes when i stop and go into shops come out again it seems to only come on halfway through journey when I get back take card out thats when i can tell, Also are they supposed to mix up the files when playing back as on the list of files say the file is 001 the next is 007 then 003 etc, I may be doing something wrong eh, also when i start off (you only know when playing back file at home) the Gps only comes on again halfway up the road ? missing the tracking/speed etc. sorry to be a pest but you may have had problems yourself, cheers T

Please enlighten me - am considering buying the A118 but am no 'techie' - all I want to do is install this behind my mirror and 'forget' it until there has been an incident. I dont want to touch it after installation or play anything back - just install initially and forget its there until its required - hoping in unlikely event of an acident the resultant 'bump' will automatically be recorded for extraction after the event. Is this feasible with this unit or am I being an optimist ?

April 2, 2015 | Unregistered Commentersignum

Yes that's how I use the cameras. Once set up I don't touch the settings or camera again. Every couple of weeks I check to see that the video still looks ok (e.g. The lens hasn't fogged up or something).

Hi, how about running the dashcam from a solar powered power bank ? Something like this.....

https://shop.technabob.com/sales/solarjuice-10000mah-battery-pack?utm_source=theawesomer&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=zerolemon10000mAh

April 3, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJim

Well I suppose that would do it if there's absolutely no other way of getting a 5v feed to it.
But lets say it takes 1 amp (1000mA) when recording, then that power unit would only have enough charge for a max of 10hours - and you'd have to keep manually switching it on & off

April 3, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterrestyler

... forgot to add that the solar unit specs do not give its rate of charge but taken from an Amazon review :-
'. The solar panel is to small to be useful. It would take a solid 2-3 weeks of full sun to charge this thing all the way'

April 3, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterrestyler

First of all I'd like to say I really enjoyed your videos. Well presented, informative, light -hearted and entertaining. Frankly I think you are wasted on You Tube and need your own spot on the Gadget Show or something like that. I hear Top Gear are a man down...

Having watched all your videos I purchased a B40 A118 Wedge on your recommendation. I was going to fork out £90 for a Mio from Halfords but this works just as well at half the price. So far I have only done a test run with it jammed under the passenger headrest but the results were excellent. I'm now thinking of getting a second one at the rear and wiring them both to the cigerette lighter with a 12V to 5V USB converter with two USB outs which I've seen on ebay

April 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMark Jackson

Thanks for the compliment. A couple of tips, if you are getting another for the rear, double check you've got somewhere to stick it that won't damage the heated wires on the glass. Also you'll need a splitter that has two 1 amp outputs. Also double check you can get the angle you want on the glass, rear windows. For more on car power USB splitters here's an article I wrote a while ago. http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2014/7/19/batteries-cables-and-confusion.html

Hi Mat,

I am about to buy an A118 but I want to mount it on the dashboard, is it possible to flip the video or does it automatically record the video the right way up which ever way the camera is.

Thanks,

Minataur.

April 16, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterminataur

it won't flip the video, there's no option for that, the video would be upside down

April 16, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterjokiin

Hi Matt, Thanks for all your advise on these dash cams, I bought a A118 the capacitor model with GPS I also purchased and fitted a hard wire system both from Foxoffer, I just have a small problem which I find and that is when I switch the ign on it switches on but when i turn the key further to start the car it goes off and sometimes dosn't come back on ?unless you remember and switch the record button but as its hidden behind the mirror with the gps module i cant really tell if its on or off, any thoughts on the matter or could i have a faulty cam or lead , apart from that its fine , one other thing when you take the micro sd card out to play back on laptop, it seems to have missed a couple of video tracks possably not switching on, but the gps /speed /date and time is great, we are heading up to scotland with the caravan in a couple of months and doing some island hopping and along some beautiful roads, (for a month) great eh, cheers Tony

April 17, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterscaniaman

@scaniaman there's a firmware update that addresses this problem, contact Foxoffer and they'll send it to you

April 17, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterjokiin

Thanks jokiin will do just that. cheers

Hi all, I'm hoping you can help me.

I ordered the capicitor version from Amazon, it worked fine the first day then day two I noticed that it kept getting stuck on the "welcome" screen.

The rest button just does that, power off/ on rather than a data reset and this does not fix the issue, I've used the camera power button, does not fix it, pulled the power lead, card etc, does not fix it...

The next day it worked fine?! Weird.

Then after I filled up that day it went back to the welcome screen. I cannot find any reason why this happened. I'm using the supplied card, formatted it etc and have had no response from the seller as to a fix.

Any ideas?

One day I was fed up pressed all buttons in various combinations when stuck on the welcome menu and when it worked the next day the image was inverted.... When I returned back to my car later that day it was normal...

Something isn't right here at all.
