What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

SPECIAL DASHCAM CARDS

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for dashcams...here's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

The A118 / B40 Wedge Dashcam Review

This camera has been on the market for quite a few months however I've only recently installed one in my car and I now plan to keep it there until either it stops working or something better comes along.

I must reiterate that this is a budget model and I really have have no idea how long it will continue to work for. I've received feedback that some cameras I've reviewed and rated highly like the 0803 can have short life spans especially in hot environments.

Given that I'm always testing a different model and I don't live in a hot part of the world, I just can't test a camera's long term relibility in a sunbaked car.  No one should expect a budget camera ito last as long as a premium model (with a two year warranty) but if your budget is limited and you want to know more about a particular device from people who have first hand experience of using it, I'd recommend looking through the forum on Dashcamtalk.

DOWNLOADABLE CLIPS

I have uploaded the sample clips here. Do not stream these as this downgrades the quality - you need to download the clips and then play them back from your computer to see their true original quality.

I will probably hard-wire it in. The car has a roof console above the rearview mirror and I can probably obtain current from the reading lamps or wires to the light/rain sensors. Of course I must not forget to use a 12v to 5v stepdown converter or I will fry the camera as others have done for not using an adapter.

Going to buy the updated capacitor version of A118. Mainly due to its size and capability of mounting it behind the black dots on the top of the windscreen leaving just the lens visible.
A couple of questions a) will the mount damage the dots on windscreen and b) will it be easy to remove using your dental tape method, again without removing the dots.

LIke a couple of people on your Youtube comments, I'm having problems with the emergency/save file button. Those people were having trouble with it only saving a file after the event of interest. In my case it doesn't appear to do anything.

Can anyone comment on whether this button is meant to put a file in a different folder or just put a read-only flag. Mine's doing neither but I wonder whether there's a hidden folder or something.

Thanks
Stuart

any marked files will be moved to the RO folder (read only) if the screen is off at the time you'd need to press it twice, once to wake the screen up, again to save the file, or once only if the screen is on at the time, you'll see the lock icon on screen when you do this

Hi Matt
I finally found a Uk agent who is selling the Blackvue 650 at a realistic price but they say the cam is not suitable for cars with DAB radio. Reading forums on this subject it would appear many cams cause RFI/ EMI interference which in a modern high tech car could have consequences way above DAB. I have DAB but could live FM but I also have sensors in the windscreen close to where a cam would be mounted. On my motorhome my wireless reversing camera knocks out the FM ( not a problem for me ) but I I never managed to cure it despite trying very hard.
have you found any problems with the cameras you have tested or come to any answers about such interference?

@jokin

Thanks for that. I didn't realise I needed to press twice. I'll give it a go.

Hey Techmoan, in the video you mentioned getting some polarization film for this dash cam. I was wondering what your results were and where you bought your stuff if it did alright. I'm looking at getting some polarization film to cover the lense as I'm getting HORRIBLE reflections due to the angle my windshield and dash are at to each other.

I got a lens but it was too big so I gave up on the idea.

Back again, well I coupled the GPS into my A118 dash cam and have been on a drive, on return managed to get it to playback via the registratorviewer App (great) records the speed on the graff, and the car shows on the map like a satnav, the only fault I have is I have no speedometer as it shows on the viewer only on the graff ,The main fault i have it shows the wrong date and 1 hr out, cant fathom out how to correct this anybody know a fix .
