What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

Mini 0803 - Probably The Best Mini Dashcam with a Screen

Here is my review of the Mini 0803 Car DVR, in the video you'll also see a brief low-light comparison with the old Mini 0801. Low light is the area where the biggest advancement can be seen over the older model - but there are other improvements too.

As I've already made a full review of the Mini 0801, I decided to keep this video as brief as possible, and didn't test every option fully. I have a feeling that the video quality might be improved still further if the settings were tweaked a bit - perhaps the 'Super Fine' mode adds grain to the image. These are all things you could experiment with yourself if you buy one from one of the links below.

As the Mini 0803 is a good camera for people looking to get their first dashcam, I've included a brief dash-cam overview in this video - for a more detailed newcomers guide to dashcams - Click Here.

I ordered mine from Amazon as I've been having a few issues recently with Chinese dash-cam orders getting returned back to the seller by Chinese customs. Perhaps it's an issue with the exportation of devices with built-in lithium batteries...but whatever the reason, you may find that Amazon is your best bet for a quick and hassle-free delivery with buyer protection as well as the possiblilty of returning the camera if it's faulty.

Additional info:

It is possible to manually lock files by pressing the down arrow when the camera is recording. The G-Sensor will do this automatically when it's triggered.

I bought mine via Amazon Prime UK. It arrived the next day. Not all the camera configurations are available with have a browse around Amazon or ebay for a configuration and delivery option that is most suitable for you.

IMPORTANT UPDATE (Overheating issues) - OCTOBER 2014

I've received a number of reports from people who live in hotter countries that have experienced overheating issues and failures with the 0803. Due to the short time that I use any one camera for and the lower temperature where I live, I haven't had any issues myself but I would now recommend you avoid the 0803 if you live in a hot country.

Final Update - April 2015

I've heard so many negative stories about the reliability of this camera - I no longer recommend it at all.

Some models of mini 0803 and 0805 have the radiator against overheating.

Hi, I have had an Eprance mini 0803 since November and have been really pleased with it. Now it will not automatically record on start up with the ignition on. It used to! I just get the blue led light on continuously and after 1 minute, the unit powers down, (I have it set to power off at 1 minute). Any advice? Also, When connected to my PC, it just says "USB connecting". Is that normal? Any advice welcome.

January 24, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterTrevor Dean

dear Techmoan,
Thank you for your great reviews and videos. It helped me decide to buy an 0803 with new A70 chipset and I had it wired into my car. I drought the DVR in June 2015 and had it fitted when the new car arrived in September and have been using it since then.
When on long trips, I noticed that it locks up and it emits a fast audible beeping noise. Which only goes away if I hold the OFF button and then restart it.
Have you seen this before? It behaves like a software bug.
It has a mini-USB cable and connector so I would like to rev the software in case it is simply needs an update. I have written to the Supplier via the Amazon link in the meantime.

Once again, thanks for being interested and so focussed on this area - you are my default tech bench-tester by far :-)

If you can suggest anything or recognise the issue I would welcome the input.

after seening the video of the mini 0803 I purchased the latest 0805. Excellent bit of kit but the instructions were so small a print I had to use a magnifying glass to read them, They must have been written for the 0801 as they bore no resemblance to the 0805,
Easy to download to my PC and good quality so am pleased so far

my trucks outlet doesnt shut off when i turn off my car, i just purchased this camera and was wondering if my trucks battery would be dead with the camera plugged in?

January 29, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterStan10

Besides the known problem like making continous loud noise etc, the 803 is recording intermittently. The gap can be between 15 seconds to one minute which renders the unit useless. Does anyone have this problem? Can you advise how to fix it?

January 30, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterKN Lim

Lim ... i have had similar problems with intermittent recording and files or segments that won't play .. i believe the problem is in the quality and speed of your 32 gb mem card. i have tried 3 differnt mem cards and only one has worked todate... ric

Hi Ric

Thanks for the info. I use a Samsung 32 EVO. It does not show the class. Which particular card worked for ? I should try it out

January 30, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterkN Lim

hi Lim; i gotta whine a bit first and tell you that i tried the samsung class 10-read 24mbwith write 7mb; then the sandisc extreme with 45 mb read and 45 mb write-- all whith the same results.. i got files to record onto the cards but the playback would not be consistent after the first 30 to 40 minutes; althought the files were there, they would not play back; so then i tried the "expensive" san disk extreme plus with read and write at 80 mb; note all the cards above were 32gb and class 10... good luck; i thik this card info should have been in the specs for the 803...regards...ric

January 31, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterricardo

Thanks again Ric. I will give the "expensive" Sandisc a try.

No doubt this query is blindingly obvious to many of you but, as a new owner of the 0803, I can't work out why the normally blue light, bottom right, sometimes flashes red or alternate red/blue. Also, does it come with GPS built into the mount, or is that an add-on?

February 4, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterThe Tartan Tearaway

Hi Tartan Tearaway, My 0803 does the same thing. Blue flashing is recording, red flashing is charging the battery. I find it will flash red and blue for about 15 minutes then only flash blue for about the same time then flash both again. I assume it is just the battery constantly being charged as I don't think the battery lasts very long on its own. GPS is built into the mount. Great little cam.

Hi Tartan

I recently changed things a bit in my car so my 0803 is powered by a two port Anker charger, so I have a socket free to charge my phone.

I took the cable off the supplied charger and fitted a USB plug so I could use that with a port on the Anker charger. I was considering fitting a USB socket to the supplied charger so it could be used as a backup, but I decided to check it first and it turns out it outputs 5.6V (ignition off - ~12V input. I didn't check with the engine running and the input at ~14V).

This is 12% over 5V, which could have contributed to some of the overheating, crashing and battery ballooning issues people have mentioned with the 0803.

Can anyone verify whether the date/time stamp can be configured to show GPS speed as well?

Two Questions:
1. How do I stop my 0805 recording when I don't want it to?
2. No sound. How do I turn the mic on?

February 26, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterBradRogers

Hi, I haven't read all the comments, but is there a suction mount for the 0801/3/5 units? I want to be able to move my dash cam between cars, and don't particularly want to stick the GPS unit to the screen, or have to buy another stick on unit.
Also, the unit seems to be quite stiff in the mount, so removing it to move to another car doesn't seem a good idea.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAndy

Andy, there isn't. I got this and hacked/bodged it.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterPaul

Thanks for that quick reply Paul!
I was coming to the same conclusion.

What I might do instead is buy these suckers and put a piece of stiff flat plastic between, and then stick the 0805 base to that.
Could use 2, 3 or 4 suckers I suppose.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAndy

I too have been looking for a decent suction mount and am considering getting this one:
and cutting the top logs off, or this one:
and adding a bit of metal to the Mini's sticky pad

another idea I have for is for a polarising filter - see here:

nb: I don't even own an 0803 yet, buy ordered one yesterday from Amazon after discovering this superb review site.

February 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterKevin Browne

I bought an 0803 from e-prance on Amazon UK following watching this review - I wanted GPS, as well as a new rear camera (already had a Mobius).

I've moved my Mobius to the back window, and put the 0805 (which is what I actually received from E-Prance, 0805 firmware flashes perfectly, and fixes the various issues) in the front. The only issue i've got at the moment is occasionally it'll stop recording at random points for ~5 minutes.

An unintended (but nice) feature of RegistratorViewer is that if I plug both mobius and 0805 in together, the application plots 0805 location and speed onto the mobius clips - really really nice because you get disorientated looking at backwards facing video for a long time!

I bough this cam based on your review but after a day of filming a majority of the last recordings wont play and on the cam come up as invalid. what should i do ?

March 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJason

jason, from march 15... i had similar problems and i found that the only answer was to upgrade my 32 gb class 10 mem card to a scandisk "extreme plus" ; i tried the "extreme" and this was not fast enough- my recorder needed the 80 mb/sec speed on both read and write; the card is expensive but it worked; let me know if this solves your problem...regards..ric

March 15, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterricardo

I have a class 10/ultra-1 card, works fine.

But there are loads of fakes so you might have a crappy slow card which was rebranded.

See earlier posting - only buy from ebuyer, dabs, scan or amazon themselves, and not 3rd party/marketplace/ebay.
and not "sold by XXX fulfilled by amazon".

March 15, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterPaul M

I have a 32gb samsung memory card that was part of a bundle pack on Amazon
