What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

SPECIAL DASHCAM CARDS

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for dashcams...here's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

At last it's the Real SJ4000 WiFi Review

Here at last, is my review of the SJ4000 WiFi review. Whilst there isn't a massive amount of difference between this and my original non-wifi version, somehow I've managed to stretch this out into a half hour video.

If you just want to know about the WiFi function and whether there are any other differences between this and the older models, you'll find your answer in the first few minutes, so no point skipping to the end.

In this video I also take a minute to explain why you should think twice before ordering the SJ5000 camera that's doing the rounds at the moment.

My video review is below.

Thanks for the review, not sure I need one to complement my Mobius and UniEye w/wifi but who knows...actually if I were to get another one it would be the Sony AS as it had excellent stereo sound and a slightly different form factor.

Thanks for the review. I just ordered my camera from foxoffer.com

Hello! Amazing review as always. I have one question though and I'll really appreciate an answer.
SJCAM SJ4000 branded or the original one (unbranded,as yours) ? 5$ difference.

Hello
Just a simple question, can we use the AT200 clock with SJ4000 wifi?
Thank you

Nuno

September 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNuno

No, the AT200 remote doesn't use WiFi.

Thanks for the review. Im convinced and bought 1 a few hours ago. keep it up man ;)

Nice review, Techmoan!
The bug with the stamp is present on the no-wifi sj4000 too. I noticed it too in one of my tests. I've put a SFD stamp and in 720p mode it said RFD. So it looks like it goes back a character in the alphabet on a random letter

September 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterFreddy

Well at least you've confirmed that I'm not going crazy, so thanks for that.

Thanks for the wonderful reviews. Anyone trying to do a video review should watch your work,
Do you have an idea of the distance range of the WIfi with an Android device and the the sjcam sj4000 wifi?
1 meter, 2 meters or more?
Thanks in advance

Very, very helpful review!! Once your video was done I ordered one at Foxoffer.
I was truly convinced.
Thank you very much and keep up the excellent work!
Greetings from the Netherlands.

Really great review (as well as the previous ones)! Although it's a pity that you don't care about underwater performance, as far as I know the differences are huge even between well known brands.
One quick question: in some of the last words, you're saying that with current price, the SJ4000 'is getting a bit close to some of the big boys in the game'. Which 'boys' do you mean? Which action cam offers better performance/accessories in your opinion (and keeps similar price level)? The choice is getting bigger every day...

You can also get the SJCAM WiFi at GeekBuying @$102.39 since they are doing a promotion.

Hi Techmoan,
nice Reviews. I would like to know the minimum focus distance.
Can you provide these?

September 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJames

Hi,
is there a possibility to use some remote control on wrist?

Thx

September 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRipper

Awesome and informative review as per usual, just purchased the non-WiFi version and anxiously await its arrival. By the way I watch all your reviews video recorders or not, very enlightening at time and got to say your a man of many talents, keep up the great work you do.

September 27, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSlivy58

You totally sold me on the camera, but for the Amazon US link it was just a search field into Amazon. All the vendors have no more than 4 reviews and I was wondering if you knew of any venders on Amazon that sell the real SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi version.

September 27, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDallas Smith

Hello i am wondering what is the diffrence between the new and old SJ4000? is it just the wifi, or is the picture diffrent(it looks better to me(better colors, old one was too white?) but i am not sure?

Also is there any better camera for such price and that has real 60 frames at 720p? thanks

September 28, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterjustwondering

Hey. I'm just wondering about the audio, in your video review of the original SJ4000 the audio seemed to sound much better with the Moe Sizlack character playing the fiddle than anything in this video. Did you notice any changes in the microphone in this version compared to the older version?

September 28, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterblitz

I didn't find any good street performers this time, but the audio does seem a little bit quieter on this camera than my old SJ4000 though. The SJ4000 that I bought in January isn't made any more though, the SJCAM version has different menus additional vents and possibly a new/different mic as well.

September 28, 2014 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Does anyone know if it is possible to just buy the camera on its own? A lot of current SJ4000 owners (non wifi version) would probably upgrade so would just like the camera without all the associated cases and other bobbins.

Maybe a future opportunity for Foxoffer here??

September 28, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCaptain Perfecto

Hi Captain Perfecto,

I have been doing a lot of research on the SJCAM SJ4000 in general and can't say I've come across anyone selling just the camera itself, not to say it doesn't exist, doubt many suppliers would be inclined to do so since most buyers will be opting for the whole package.
As for myself, I chose to buy the non-WiFi version since I already have a decent point-n-shoot type camera w/20X zoom that can be controlled with my Android tablet/phone via WiFi, accessing files for D/L and preview is easier done by using an adaptor and plugging it into my 'puter, much faster too. If the SJ4000 didn't have an LCD screen then that would be a different story, in saying that, pricing seems to be as such that the difference between the two is fairly minimal.

Slivy58

Hi,

you think there will be an app for windows phone?

September 28, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRS

Hi RS,

I own two Windows phones (Ativ S & Lumia 1020), think you'll have to contact the app developer on this one for a definitive answer, going by past experiences my guess is that it will be very unlikely at this point and time.

I noticed there is no Motion Sensor listed on the box or in the instruction manual from what I saw, but there is a Motion Sensor On/Off in the set-up menu. I turned it on, and it works! Cool!

September 28, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNick Quattro

Thanks for the informative review. Perhaps somebody can confirm something for me, however:

Can the WiFi connection be used to stream directly to the PC instead of an iOS or Android device? I'm looking for capable - and preferably wireless - option that will allow me to stream live demonstrations over Google Hangouts / Skype in a scenario where I will often want to be moving and re-positioning the camera.

If WiFi isn't an option, is it a reasonable expectation that the above software will pick up the SJ4000 as an input device if connected via USB or HDMI, even if the SJ4000 itself can't record while doing so? Of course that would turn it into an overpriced webcam.. an in-Action cam, if you will, but it still might be worth it as long as the device can double as a dash cam too.

September 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSiygess

Thanks for another great review !
I wanted to ask what you think what would the audio quality be in very loud environment like music festivals (lots of bass etc..). I see a lot of people with goPro and the audio they produce seems decent.

Any chance you could try it at night time/club/festival environments?? I think it would make another great review ;)

September 30, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDaniel

Someone else will have to do that test, you won't find me within 50 miles of a festival (I don't like crowds). The action camera with the best sound is the Sony range....by a long stretch.

September 30, 2014 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Now that the Gopro4 is out you HAVE to test it...we NEED your review on the top-of-the line model....even if un you will not name it..

Thanks!
