What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

UK & US LINKS & PRICES BELOW

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

SPECIAL DASHCAM CARDS

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for dashcams...here's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

At last it's the Real SJ4000 WiFi Review

Here at last, is my review of the SJ4000 WiFi review. Whilst there isn't a massive amount of difference between this and my original non-wifi version, somehow I've managed to stretch this out into a half hour video.

If you just want to know about the WiFi function and whether there are any other differences between this and the older models, you'll find your answer in the first few minutes, so no point skipping to the end.

In this video I also take a minute to explain why you should think twice before ordering the SJ5000 camera that's doing the rounds at the moment.

My video review is below.

Hi Techmoan,

Nice review. Just wondering whether on wifi mode, can you control zoom via your smartphone? (android/IOS)?
Also, in Malaysia all shops are promoting SJ5000 currently. Should I get this instead of the 4000?

Hi Techmoan,

did you mention anything about the SJ5000 in your review?
also, can you use your smartphone to zoom in and out rather than use the camera?

February 4, 2015 | Unregistered Commenteriestatiptra

Hi again.
I forgot to mention that when I touch the message " Please connect camera" on my mobile screen, I get the message : " Pleae update FW!"

May be this can help you advice me on my problem.

Thanks again.

Hi. I have an SJ4000 - not the wifi version, and I was thinking of getting the WiFi one as well, but only if it can be used for FPV on a quadcopter. Has anyone tried this? Does the WiFi have enough range? If it's only a few feet, as our host suggests, then I don't really see the point in the WiFi at all. Any comments?

Hi all,
I have some questions regarding editing .mov videos from SJ4000.
Im using Cyberlink Powerdirector 11 ...everything is fine till I would like export video. From output formats is possible only VMW or MPEG2 ...if I try to save it as MKV or MPEG-4, it doesn't work. There appears comment with: codec H.264 and hardware acceleration.
Could you please tell me, what I need to do? ...or is any better solution for editing videos from SJ4000?
I think, the best is using some software which can work with .mov and also save the output video in same format. Is it possible?

It includes cash back guarantee. It implies you can find your money returning if you’re dissatisfied while using the actual high quality of
the software.

Word of warning about fox offer. My sj4000 stopped working after only a few weeks of light use. Fox Offer refused to replace it.
Essentially there's no consumer protection if you buy directly from companies like this.

Hi,

This is a warning.
I had a perfectly working SJ4000 WIFI bought from banggood. I just found out that it actually did real 60 fps video in 720. Allthough the imagequality was much worse than the 30fps video it was really 60 fps. I still have too samples.
The old firmware was version: G20141205V01 with datestamp dec 05 2014.

Then i was stupid.

I thought lets do a firmware upgrade, it can only get better i thought. First i tried the latest version from the SJCAM website. It essentially bricked the camera. No repsonse to any button. Fortunately i could upgrade the camera with the old Firmware which is also on their site.
Now i lost my OK button. It doesn't do anything anymore. Fortunately the down arrow has now the functionality of the OK button so i can still record. I don't have the down button functionality anymore, so i have to cycle round each time i want to go down in a menu. Also the 60fps is now the doubled 30 fps.

Hopefully there will be another fw available soon that fixes my camera.

Back in the Fall I purchased this camera and during the process of installing the firmware update the camera itself stopped working. it would not turn on at all. The yellow light at the top would light up but the blue light on the back would not and it would not power up. The company I purchased if from replaced the camera and it initially worked just fine. However when I inserted the sd card it no longer worked, it would not turn on at all. Could the sd card have had some type of a virus or worm on it that wiped out the operating system? And if so is there a way I can reload that back to the camera? Or should I just send this one back as well in hope of them replacing it?
Please help.

Got my original. Impressed fro a while. Connected to my phone once then that was it! Won't reconnect or connect to any Android device.
This was main reason for purchase as I can't get down low and eyesight is poor so want bigger screen. Any suggestions?
Otherwise going to have to go back.

Please ignore my above comment. I was having a senior moment (well I was 65 on March 1st!) I have been recently connecting a lot of Bluetooth stuff and for some reason i suddenly started to try and connect this via Bluetooth instead of Wifi. Doh! All fine now.

Hi there Thechmoan

Thank you for the absolutely awesome review you did on this camera. I just ordered one of ebay a few days ago. Im still waiting for it to come in the mail.

It will come with a 16 gb memory card, but it doesn't specify what class it is.. regardless, I want to buy a 32 gb one to use specifically on the SJ4000.

What class do you recommend?

Greetings from Tijuana Mexico

@Luis - Class 10 - more important to make sure it isn't a fake card though. Buy from a reliable source.

@Joe not something I've ever tried.

Hi everyone,

I have recently bought the sj4000 wifi action cam. I would very much like to find a wifi remote controller, to be able to take pics when diving and using a selfie stick. I have looked everywhere on the internet, and there are sellers who offer the camera including a wifi remote, but apparently none of them sell the wifi remote separately. Unfortunately the gopro remotes appear to be non-compatible with the sj4000. Can anyone help me out?

Kind regards, Gijs from The Netherlands

Hi, I have one of the original GroPro Hero cameras so I'm thinking now is about the right time to get a new camera. I have been doing some research on these and it looks as they are the best deal at the moment. My question though is if I buy 2 or more can they all be controlled via wifi on an android phone? or does the android app only allow the use of one unit......

March 10, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJimmyC

Whoever was mentionning the SJ4000 wifi does real 60fps - check again, no IT DOES NOT !

What it does is double frame... so whenever looking at the movie properties you will see 60fps but its not real 60fps, which explains why your video quality was worst than 30fps.
The SJCAM just does not have the power to process real 60fps encoding, period.... The SJ5000 claimes to do real 60fps @ 640x480 though.

Oh and SJ4000/5000 coming close to high-end actiion cam ? Not even close! Any basic action cam will do 1080p recording... the high end ones are years ahead with 120fps full HD... even 4k now.

Enjoy the SJCAM for what it is... a low budget action cam that is still an awesome product bang for bucks.

Looks like I am not alone with the firmware update problem. I have seen many with this problem asking for help, however, I have not seen a fix. I purchased my SJCAM Sj4000 Wi-Fi in Aug 2014 with version: W20140918V02. I understood it was older than the version ending in V01. I will not upgrade firmware unless there is a problem. Now I have a problem. The Android app worked fine..for a while. Now it will not connect via my Wi-Fi app and when I try to connect, my phone says to upgrade my FW. No connection.I followed the instructions and it still doesn’t work. I have also emailed SJCAM and have not heard from them. Anyone have a real solution to this and the exact firmware with a link to fix it? SJCAM…how about addressing this for us?
If anyone can fix this it's Techmoan!!!

So, after buying a £15 dash cam, i stumbled upon your vid on the tube sj4000 wifi. Gald i did as i was gonna upgrade to a "real" camera! Loads on tha electronic buying site & many if them don't have the same writing in the front...guessing you saved me from another naff purchase...any way your vid was well worth a look :)
P.S.
Have you reviewed the iPad Air's Youtube app? Only asking as i can't find a way to comment on any video from it...could be i'm just a techno-no-no (just made that up) who no's no stuff.
P.P.S.
Havn't included email as i'm not sure if it would show on my comment? Can you imagine all the Spam Fritters!
