What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

At last it's the Real SJ4000 WiFi Review

Here at last, is my review of the SJ4000 WiFi review. Whilst there isn't a massive amount of difference between this and my original non-wifi version, somehow I've managed to stretch this out into a half hour video.

If you just want to know about the WiFi function and whether there are any other differences between this and the older models, you'll find your answer in the first few minutes, so no point skipping to the end.

In this video I also take a minute to explain why you should think twice before ordering the SJ5000 camera that's doing the rounds at the moment.

My video review is below.

I think I just realized that the one I bought is a fake. Will it still work okay or should I see if I can return it? Thank you for your informative site

Hi, just seeing if you know the charging time for the battery and whats the max GB sd card will it accept?

March 18, 2015 | Unregistered Commentertrinket

I recently purchased an SJ4000 from Amazon which I returned immediately as the play back sound was hardly audible and I could not get it to play back via the TV using an HDI cable. I now have a replacement SJ4000 and I have exactly the same problems. I can play the SD card fine on my PC but have to have the volume turned up high??

What am I doing wrong?

I have a ST4000 and a ST4000 Cam Wi Fi. I have a question re: the Wi Fi Camera. I can take and view video and pictures via the screen on the back of the camera and via the Wi Fi link to an iPhone. If I try to copy them to my iPad using the chip, it says no photos available. If I put the chip in an adapter and place it in my PC, I can see and play the files in Quicktime.

I can move videos etc on from my no wireless model ST4000 but the iPad won't read the files taken with the WiFi even if they are on the same chip.

Am I asking too much of the WiF Version? I would like to transfer the files to my iPad quickly and directly using the chip. How?

Any advise would be appreciated.

I Have Just Been Bought This Camera For My Birthday, I Have Watched Your Videos Where You Have To Scroll Through To Get To Things But Mine Was Dated Jan 2015 And I Think It's Had Updates Because As Soon As I Plug It Into TV It Plays Without Scrolling Through Everything, The Position Of The Settings On The Screen Of The Camera Are In A Different Order And Seem To Have A Lot Of The Feathers Of The DJ5000 I Love It The Videos Are Crystal Clear When Played Back No Jerkiness Or Anything. Thanks For Your Brilliant Reviews, I Was Concerned When Hubby Told Me He Had Ordered One Whether Or Not It Was Going To Be The Real Deal, He Contacted The Seller On Ebay Who Replied In Broken English It Wasn't Official One! So He Wrote Back To Say It Had all The Branding And A Scratch Off Label To Check Authenticity And Got A Reply Saying They Had Spoken To Their Leader! (MoUtzy TonguE IM Guessing) And Said It Was Official And Sorry For Confucius (Yes It Made Me Laugh Out Loud Too!) Needless To Say It's Fab!

Is the DBPower the same model?

Or where would you best advise to purchase one from

I know this post shouldnt be in here but this is also related to the sjcam line of cameras.
I purchased an SJ5000 wifi and im having problems transferring files from my SD card to my laptop. I get an error that a program should be installed. THE SD card appears empty on my SD card when trying to access the files from my laptop. When I placed my SD card again to camera the videos are all gone but the remaining time to record video remains the same .. which means they may still be hidden in the SD card. :( please help.

Sounds like the symptoms of a dodgy fake (or faulty) SD card to me. Try a different class 10 card bought from a trustworthy source.

I just want to take the time to thank you for this and every video that you take the time to make... some that stand out for me is the smash camera (sledge hammered at the end), these SJ4000 and all the other dash and sport cameras. Also your "GoPro vs SJ4000" was great.

I bought a GW1 dash cam (it broke after about 25 days, the top power button busted off the main board inside. It did work great like you said. I tried to get a TLC SVC200 but the "only distributor" was way too expensive.

I did get the XDreme 1080 and I do really like it. I use it for underwater filming.

I intend to use the regular SJ4000 to film will film what's going on top water, while the wireless SJ4000 will film on and around the boat

I really enjoy your review and your honest "no nonsense" attitude. Keep up the great work.

April 7, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

NO worries, thanks. I'll go ahead and purchase another class 10 probably toshiba? or kingston ..

April 8, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterhoneybee16

Thank you for all the reviews :D They are really well made. I am asking you if you are going to review the SOOCOO S60 HD video camera (e-bay link: ). It looks interesting because of integrated LEDs and I would like to see how it performs in dark enviroment. It is also waterproof without external case.

Thank you and keep up the good work !!!

I am trying to find out if the sjcam 4000 or m10 could be practically used as a back up camera .By this, I mean can it turn on with the car ignition in WiFi mode already up and running to be seen on a tablet in the front. Thanks if anyone knows the answer to this.

April 26, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterkapmac

Just had delivery of my SJ4000 wifi – so far, so good.
Is there a way I can keep the camera in its case and charge the battery via its usb port? Or would I have to make alterations to the case, such as cutting a slot for the usb?

BTW, great review.

May 5, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterB9viewer

Can anyone tell me if this is a copy, please?

May 8, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAins

That one is a fake. If it doesn't have SJCAM on the front of the camera, it is fake.

Hi, many thanks Techmoan for your review of the sjcam sj4000. I ordered mine (keepingood) before I saw your review and recommended supplier. Many ppl seem to be concerned about fakes. I understand that the more recent ones (I ordered May 15) now have the scratch panel and security code to confirm authenticity via the sjcam website. Mine passed the test and has the correct start up screens but there are a few minor and subtle differences which I am assured are down to case design. The speaker, near the up /down buttons is in a slightly different location and the text / labelling next to the ports is slightly different compared to the camera shown in your review. Evening works fine though.

Hi. I thought I'd give an update on my (genuine) SJ4000 which I have been using fairly often for the last six months. Now, I've never updated the firmware - it ain't broke so don't fix it - and I've got to say that I have been 100% happy with everything about it. It has never failed, unlike the Mini 0803 and the G1W that I bought as dashcams (see my comments on those). I'm now using the 4000 as a dashcam since this is the only one that is reliable. Removing it from the car each day is a bit of a pain but I can live with that. Anyway, it means that as I always have it in the car, I just pop it off its mount and carry it with me to use as a general-purpose camcorder wherever I go! (Incidentally, I got a lens cap for it and a little case that I can put it into, and they've been very useful)
So, thumbs up so far! Brilliant bit of kit!

Hi TechMoan, I've just purchased this after watching your review. It arrived today and its bloody fantastic. Thanks for saving me some pennies. I've uploaded a brief video on my Haizum74 channel and copied a link to this site, if thats ok.

May 20, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAins (Haizum74)

Can you explain the comment about still image quality "keep it in 2MP mode because the sensor is 2MP and choosing a larger option will just create larger files of the same quality?" I don't completely understand this. Is this because the sensor is only capable of capturing images at a maximum resolution of 1920x1080 = ~2MP? How do you know that this is the maximum capability of the sensor for still images. I see that this is the maximum quality for video, but is it the same for still?

May 30, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterRoger

I answered this a few times previously in the comments - but I was wrong in the video the actual sensor is a 3MP sensor. 3MP is the native resolution of the sensor. If you set the resolution to say 6MP it will just show each pixel twice.

My SJ4000wifi doesn't connect to my iPhone app. It first says update FW, select okay then try to connect camera but it fails to connect.
I also have difficultly in updating the FW, you got a video for that ?

Would like to get a battery with longer life for SJCAM. I've seen some talk that they do exist but cannot track it down. Would appreciate info on where I could buy a couple.
