What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

The Big SJ5000+ Action Camera Review

Twenty-odd years ago I worked in HMV. I remember being amazed when people came in the shop asking whether the latest cinema release was also available to buy on video. Fast forward a couple of decades and within a few hours of the  SJCAM SJ5000+ being announced as a preorder, scores of people emailed me to inform me that the camera was out now, asking me when my review would be ready. It seems like some things haven't changed much.

I don't know why people thought that I wouldn’t have heard about the SJ5000+. My previous SJCAM reviews have amassed a couple of million views, so it's a company that I naturally keep a close eye on. I bought their SJ5000+ as soon as it went on sale and I've been testing it for the last few weeks.

The reason I mentioned the fevered anticipation for the SJ5000+ above, is because I wonder if the pressure on SJCAM to deliver a follow up to their big hit, the SJ4000, may have resulted in this camera being rushed out before it was ready. It's definitely in need of a few firmware tweaks to get rid of bugs and the battery management could have done with optimising before the camera went on sale.

I'll have to consider this to be a review of an unfinished product.  I intend to revisit this camera if improvements are made to the way it performs and perhaps then I'll also get the chance to take it out on the motorbike on a sunny day.
Watch the video below to find out all about the SJ5000 Plus. Both the good.... and the not-so-good.
If you want a 1080p60 SJCAM now, there are some affiliated buying links below:
The ebay links are here: (click your country) UK  US  AU  DE  NL  FR

As always, download these files to your machine before viewing them - streaming will make them look worse than youtube.
Other cameras I've recently reviewed in the SJCAM range (all capable of 1080p30).
Also note that at the time of posting - Amazon UK have a great offer on the Sony AS30 at £130. This camera may not have a live video screen, but it does record 1080p60 video and has excellent quality video stabilsation, stereo sound, WiFi and GPS logging.
IMPORTANT UPDATE - the Battery life is now approx 55 Mins (Using firmware 1.7)
See video below for more info.

I'm looking into buying a camera in a few days and just wondering, between the 4000, M10 and 5000 which would you pick? Thanks!

May 4, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterBrian Redd

I'd pick the M10 - but that's me.

Hi Techmoan, I noticed that SJ5000+ has issues. but how about the SJ5000 Wifi? I'm looking for reviews about it but i believe you have a better review for the SJ5000 Wifi because of your unbiased comments. Thank you.

Thank you for the review and all the work you put into this. I noticed that SJCAM has a v2.1 firmware out now. Have you tried it out? Any thoughts/update?

I'm about to make the purchase of an action cam and this one is high on my list.

May 21, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJim

The firmware v2.1 is for sj4000 firs model ? Is on the official site to download? Sj5000+ with the last update is good on wifi mod....streaming videos (android aplication) and live view record? Xiaomi yi It is inferior to Sj5000+? Thanks

Nice review.

How many minutes can you record in a 32 Gig SD card ? provided the max setting of 1080p 60 fps ?

underwater case takes water in the first use. contacted to the company and they said they had nothing to do about it. a product is being sold with its underwater case out of the box but it is useless even after first use. do not waste your money. never recommending to anyone. definitely DO NOT BUY!

May 26, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterphotographer

Sorry to hear that Photographer. Havent dived With mine yet. But after Reading your post about the waterfroof faileur I tested my case (SJCAM 5000) at 20m for 20min without the cam. When i surfaced the case was as dry as the desserd. Maby youurs was a bad copy. Where did you buy your´s mine is from Geekbuying.

Great review thanks, Is it possible to use an external battery pack like the Anker® Astro E1 5200mAh to keep the battery charged instead of having to stop and replace the battery every hour ?

May 31, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMerlin

Yes all USB charging cameras can be charged from a battery pack. USB is always 5V. You'll need a battery pack with a 1amp or greater output.

May 31, 2015 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Thanks Matt, can you still operate it while its charging ?
Have you tried the SJCAM 5000 + with the new V2.5 firmware released the other day ?

June 1, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMerlin

I have an original SJ4000 WiFi and am very happy with it but I have one problem. When I select 20seconds in Capture Mode the camera freezes. Has anybody else had / found a solution to this? I bought the camera in August 2014 and it still has the same firmware it came with. I'm using a class 10 32gb SD card. I am able to get into the menu only via WiFi and if I format the card the camera works again.

Great and thorough reviews. Keep up the good work.
I have been putting off buying an sj5000+ for quite some time as it seems to be rather unreliable and glitchy. My question is..... Have they managed to sort it out yet or is it still much the same?

July 2, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJohn R

Any chance of a SJ4000+ review? A 2K SJCam sounds interesting.

July 19, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJohn

Thanks for another very useful review. I was hoping to find that the new model eliminated the video artefact I'm seeing when panning my new SJ4000 - but I can see a similar issue in your video. I get a small white speck, maybe 2x2 pixels, which shows up when the camera is pointing anywhere within 180 degrees of the sun! You can see it highlighted here:

If this is a lens flare than I still think it's a flaw as it occurs even when not looking into the sun. Have you noticed it?

July 20, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSJC

I have recently purchased a SJ500+ and a 32gb memory card. I am a little surprised at the size of the recording 12 minutes of video takes up 1.38gb on the memory card. I have changed the resolution to 1280x720 30p and it is still using up 1.34gb for a 12 minute video. I also own a Sony camcorder HD and the size of the videos are no where near as big as these.
So my question is this normal and could I use a larger memory card?
Any advise would be great.

I also have the regular SJ5000 and while I love the camera I have been having issues with the microphone whether it is in the case or out of the case it is very low. My daughter has the SJ4000 and the volume of the recording is perfect and 10 times better than mine. I reached out to SJCAM about this a couple weeks ago but I have never heard any reply, which is rather disturbing.

Does anyone have any advice?

August 3, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJeff

Hi, I have an SJ5000 + running the latest 2.6 firmware and I have to say I love it. Been using it for about two months now and whilst the original firmware was glitchy all seems great now. One thing that does bother me however is that for every video recorded the SJcam also records a lower resolution preview video and I dont want that. It takes up space and is just not required. Has anyone found a way to stop this?

August 4, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterdawer

I own a sjcam 5000+ very happy, until recently. My cam started recording only 1 sec movies and stops recording. In order to solve the problem, I changed the sd cards, formated them, changed the settings to defaults, having firmware version 2.0. No success. Is there anything else I could try?

Thank you very much.

Hi Techmoan,

Great review as always!

I was wondering and hoping you could get hold of a Feiyu FY-G4 gimbal to review with SJCAM.

They are a number of reviews already out there, but they're not as comprehensive as I'm sure you would make it.

Anyway, I'll keep an eye out for your video post to come through from youtube.

Keep up the great work,

Hi Techmoan,

Great very detail review as always!

I am thinking of getting this SJ5000+ but a few bad point on your review. Like the video is been a bit dull.

The firmware 2.5 is out on sjcam website. Have you give it a try to see any improvement on the video quality?

Keep up the great work,

September 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterKevin

Hi Technoman,

I've seen many of your reviews on youtube and on your website. I really like them, you're doing an awesome job. Thanks for that :)

I'm thinking of buying my first action camera. By now I've read and watched so many different reviews that I got confused, especially with all the different SJCAM versions. My favourites so far are the SJ4000 WIFI or SJ5000 WIFI, not sure about the Plus versions. I would use the camera mainly in my car to film the scenery but would also go off-road. Therefore some kind of image stabiliser would be important I guess. What would you recommend for that purpose and a budget of appr. 200 AUD? Everything is a bit more expensive in Australia :(

Thanks in advance

With the new firmware is the SJ5000 working better-- all the bugs gone? Would love an update! Great job reviewing!

October 18, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterFrances

Yes, the v2.6 and v3.2 firmware seems to have fixed a lot the issues that some folks were experiencing. We now have several now models with both 2K video record and Gyro Anti-shake: M10+, SJ4000+ Gyro, and SJ5000x Elite.

October 20, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterTony

great review, but I should have listened! I took your advice when shopping for a dash cam and ended up with a Mobius that's been great. I bought a 5000+ V3 from the manufacturer and it's worked twice! They've explained that there are three hardware versions since the initial 1.5" screen, a v2 and v3 both with a 1.54" screen. The build quality appears good, and the videos it has taken have been of excellent quality. Unfortunately, it cannot be counted on to function reliably so it's of little use to me and must be returned. I would like to know if the 5000 Wi-Fi (no plus) or 4000 Wi-Fi would be a more reliable platform? I'm unsure if all SJCAMs are of terrible quality or is it just the 5000+ that's awful beyond words.
