What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

Drift Stealth 2 - Smaller is better

Drift have been kind enough to send me over their latest, cheapest and smallest action camera - the Drift Stealth 2. In the video below you can see my full review.

After using this camera for a few weeks I can now say that it has supplanted the Contour Roam as my favourite helmet mount action camera. The mounting system is more flexible (it allows tilt), the camera is smaller, lighter and performs much better in low light.

In my opinion the Drift Stealth 2 would be an excellent commuter camera for cyclists - the three hour battery life, water resistant case and recycled video function make it idea for this purpose.

Downloadable sample clips are available here.

Can you please tell me the best helmet camera for under a hundred quid?
I have sent two back as they wont record without saving the recording in 5 minute files but I need them to to record taxi runs for the knowledge, but they seem to save a ten minute clip in two or three 3 or five minute files rather than one continuous one. Can anyone advise please?
Thanks in advance, and live the reviews.thorough and clear

Drift Cameras can’t take the heat of the Sun
Drift Innovations has been taking the customers for a ride, never telling the consequences of leaving the cameras for a few hours in the Sun;
And what is worst not having a designated technician in every country that is sold to check damage cameras with the warranty expire.
On the 2/12/2015 I send my wife with my Drift HD170 that I bought from Action Gear South Africa 3 years ago, what happen is that after it been in the sun for 4 hours did not want to come on again; The person in the office of “Action Gear South Africa” told my wife "nothing we can do sorry".
How the man responsible of the marketing in the office of “Action Gear South Africa” and winner of the “Best Customer Service Award in SA e-commerce” say that to my wife? ; That means that there is no support of the product after is out of the warranty; How such a huge company does not have designated places in every country, where the customers can take the cameras out of warranty to be check, if is worth it to repair it or get a new one; In this moment If a little thing happen to a Drift camera after warranty you have to ditch it and buy a new one, (if you can afford it) even that look like new, not a scratch, just may be a bad contact inside, that what exactly happen to my camera, I send it to a camera guy and this was his quote: Severely contaminated and faulty internal processor circuit and power supply; Parts + Labour. ZAR 2980 around 200 dollars, just what I pay for that camera new 3 years ago. I found the "Aquiles hill" of the Drift cameras, they can't stand the heat! Everybody should know that and must decide in to buy a Drift camera that can’t stand the heat or “Go Pro” because after “Drift Innovations never warn anyone or in the manual of the possibilities of the camera been damage if left in direct sun light, we cannot trust anymore the cameras from Drift Innovations.
Then I have the answer of one of the customer care of Drift innovations:
Adam (Drift Innovation)
4 December 2015, 17:15
Hi Paul,
Thanks for your email, I'm sorry to hear of the problem that you've experienced.
I'm afraid that Action Gear are correct in this case - the HD 170 is now quite an old model, so it's not possible to offer a repair.
Kind regards,
Drift Innovation
My answer was:
Hi Adam
I will never accept a new camera if they offer it, I’m not complaining for getting a new camera for free, I will make a blog for everybody in the world to know what could happen after buying a “Drift Innovations” product because somehow in 3 years me or anyone could forget the camera on the sun light and the camera won’t work again & without support for cameras out of warranty it will be back to square one, the key word here is "Technical support" of Drift products no matter how old it is.
Somehow I'm glad this happen to my Drift camera exposing a weakness in the Drift Cameras and showing the poor or no support for cameras out of warranty in South Africa and around the World by “Drift Innovations” is my responsibility to advise the people what it been going on.
First there is nowhere to found in the manual of the Drift Cameras that say do not left in the Sun, meaning the HD 170 was never test properly.
Last E-Mail to Drift Innovation:
Here is the quote of the Camera guy that inspect the HD 170 after 4 hours of sun: Severely contaminated and faulty internal processor circuit and power supply; Parts + Labour. ZAR 2980 around 200 dollars, just what I pay for that camera new 4 years ago. The Drift camera should handle cold an heat, come on is a sport camera or what, how 4 hours of sun can cause such a damage is unacceptable ; "Drift cameras can't stand the heat"; And after Adam from Drift innovations say: I'm afraid that Action Gear South Africa are correct in this case - the HD 170 is now quite an old model. Nice let's see what the owners of the HD170 have to say and what the future buyers of Drift cameras will still thinking of buying a Drift model or will go for any "Go Pro". You should offer a second hand replace camera when this happen, me or anyone else we will not be looking for a new one, my camera was 3 years old and in perfect condition before the heat destroy the internal processor circuit and power supply, that's why I'm so piss off. If you ask what I want: An apology from Action Gear South Africa for just says "nothing we can do" to my wife, (if I was there we will not be having this interaction) then they will search for an old HD170 and E Mail me when they have it ready for me. The loss of potential buyers will be in your hands and I done many Blogs before, so I know what I'm doing. Hopefully now Drift innovations know how to deal with a customer complains when because of the Sun or anything else a Drift Camera out of warranty stop working.
Regards: Paul Mackena
My E-Mail is: if anyone has a Drift Camera older than 2 years please let me know, and watch out for the Sun; I recommend get the white silicon protection, it will save your camera absorbing half of the heat while expose to any kind of heat, than the original black colour will absorb 90% of the heat around.

Does the side screen backlight stay on and the red LED keep flashing all the time its recording? If so, its hardly stealthy is it. Otherwise it looks really good.

I was just about to go out and but a Contour 3 based on your (older) review of that. I then saw the Stealth 2 on Amazon, then came back here to search for a review.

Thanks for this>

Hi, I've just bought one and looking at the footage it looks as if it's going to be really hard to identify number plates from the film. It's all in 1080p, 30fps but on pausing the film as cars over take me or come at me (on my bicycle, not motorbike) I can't read the registration plates. Do you think anything can be done to make this easier?
I'm going to have to get a micromuff too as whistle into mike is terrible intermittently

@Techmoan - Mat, I hope you read this as I need advice asap. My SVC200 got damaged by a stone while on the motorbike. It was a good camera but the FOV of 170 was too much for my needs. I use it to film another rider and discuss positioning etc for riding improvements on safety. The wide FOV makes the subject too small and too distant even when I am only 5m behind.

Now I have an opportunity to look for something more suitable. From your experience and being a motorcyclist as well how do you think the Drift Stealth 2 with 135 FOV compares to the Sony 120 FOV? Or you now of another one with narrower FOV.

The narrower the field the better for me.

Any suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciated - BTW i am not very keen on the square shaped ones, would be the last choice :-)

Many Thanks

It's been a long time since I used either so I can't really remember what the FOV like on each...your best bet is probably to look at some of the sample clips. The Sony cameras produce better quality video than the Drift stealth, but are difficult to mount to a helmet.

@techmoan : Thanks for coming back to me, appreciated.
I had a look at both clips but not easy to see the difference. By coincidence on one of the clips you were following a motorcycle and it looked OK but cannot make out the distance between you.
I will persevere :-)
Thanks again,
