What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

SPECIAL DASHCAM CARDS

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for dashcams...here's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

The Boogie Board Jot 8.5 Paperless Memo Pad

The item that I planned to bring you this week self destructed, ended up in a thousand pieces and ultimately went in the bin (make a note...WD40 can make some things worse). So instead of that I'm bringing you a simple video about a simple gadget.

The Boogie Board has always seemed to me like a solution to a problem that didn't exist, however after using one for a couple of days I've come to appreciate it for what it is. It does still feel like it's a product that no one really needs, but I could also say that about 90% of the things in my house. Video review below.

I mentioned in the video that I bought mine at Costco, they only had a couple left and were selling them off at £24 a piece to make room for new merchandise. It turns out that this wasn't much of a discount from the normal price and the best place to get one from now is probably Amazon.

Did Costco have Crystal Meth on sale?

Oh thats very similar to something I had as a kid.

But I don't know what it was, we also had a magna doodle which required a magnetic stylus to draw.

But the item I am thinking of was a similar size to what you have, maybe a bit smaller, I think it was made of cardboard and had a plastic window, there was a slider which you would slide from one side to the other which had the effect of moving a solid object between two 'layers' of the screen and causing them to separate and the message to vanish.

But like this, it wasn't magnetic, the stylus was made of plastic, and you could use your nails also.
It was fantastic to write on, so much better than a magna doodle which we got a few years later, and the pixel sharpness was excellent.

I have no idea what it was called though! This seems like a high tech version of the same thing.

I've been a big fan of the Boogie Board. Something I once thought of as nothing but a gimmick. My own preference is for the "Boogie Board JOT 4.5" - A smaller version of this. I'm constantly having to make temporary notes at my computer and it fits the bill quite well.

Interesting device - could save a lot of paper in our house I tell you!

A note about the phone number that is written at 1m11s - it's a phone number in Australia and I looked for the blog site - turns out the bloke's name is also Matt! :-)

Crikey matt, That phone number brings back memories. Did you ever get through to noel Edmonds. Funny how I can remember that number from Saturday mornings 30+ years ago but not my own number….. Multi-Coloured Swap Shop.

The reference will be lost on most international viewers. I'm not so sure why so many people read Debbie Harry as Debbie Horny, after all the 'joke' doesn't make any sense then.

Can you still write on it while it is in the locked position?

Thanks, Rick

Yes you can. The lock only disables the erase button.
