What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

Yi Dash-Cam Review

Over the last year, Xiaoyi's Yi action camera has turned out to be a very popular model due to its keen price and excellent image quality. So when the company announced their first dashcam, I instantly put in my order. That was back on New Year's day...there have been some delays with shipping, but it finally arrived a couple of weeks ago and I can demonstrate it to you now.

In the video below you can find out whether the Xiaoyi Car Camera can live up to the familiy name.

If you click your country below you can find the sellers of this camera on ebay. You may need to activate International Search in the left hand panel.

UPDATE: Now available with English language menus.

There is now a black model that is more discreet, as well as multiple menu language options.

You can DOWNLOAD my sample clips from PCloud if you click here.

Please DO NOT STREAM the pCloud samples - if you do they look like garbage!

Bought one of these after seeing review. This camera suffers with focus issues with heat which makes image horrible. Beware!!

@Warren. I really don't understand what's going on here. I am using the international version and have had no problems whatsoever with it, and we have just had a minor heat wave where I live.

What edition do you have, and from where did you purchase it?

Please understand that I love your reviews. Very clear and concise. But I tried to download your sample file and PCcloud won't allow it. It mentions that traffic was too high and suggests that I get a PCcloud account to access it. Why choose a service that is limited and uses your (you the reviewer) resources to get people to sign up for their monetary gain? Is there something in it for you? It seems to be some sort of deceptive round-a-bout advertising going on here. I'm just looking for honest reviews so that I can be informed when I make a purchase - yours I thought was honest until I got to this point.....

Oh come on, drop the paranoia and the finger pointing - it's disgusting.
I have spent hundreds of pounds every year for the last five years trying to find a download service that will not throttle, will not delete old files, will not flag video files as pirate movies, will let hundreds of people download the files at the same time and will let people download large files. I've tried all the big names and they've all let me down. PCloud came to me a couple of years ago and said that their service was different, so I signed up...and all after trialling it for six months all was working well, so I moved all the files onto it. It was fine until a week ago when the 4K samples for the most recent review must have flagged up a traffic alert.

Remember all of this has cost you nothing, so if it was a con - it's the worst one ever - how am I making money on this...I'm actually paying companies to host these files - I've even tried putting them on AWS but the bill was astronomical for a couple of weeks and I couldn't afford to pay it.
I'm trying the best I can. if I could find a service that can offer all the above I'll use it.
I didn't appreciate your inference that I'm dishonest and have ulterior motives - but I suppose that's what I get for providing a free service - obviously it's just a massive money making scheme.

Hi, I am looking for a dash cam for my motorcycle. I would like to have one like a car dash cam. Loops over footage, turn on the bike and it automatically records and stops when the power is turned off. It has to be water resistant. B cause it will be exposed to the elements on my bike. I don't want a gopro or an action cam (unless it has features like a dash cam) because of the battery does not last through the entire ride and I have to take time to manually delete the footage so not to fill the memory card up. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you

A camera like the Gitup Git 2 (link on your right) will do what you want...but you would need to figure out a way to attach power...unless you could live with the two hour battery life.

Wow - there are some complete numptys out there - I want to try and address the balance by saying how much I appreciate your honest and informative reviews. I am ploughing my way through some of them in the hopes of finding my perfect dash cam. I need to swap it between vehicles and I will also need to get it fitted for me our 2 vehicles, one of which is a small campervan and the other is our everyday vehicle. I keep seeing the name Nextbase coming up other reviews and wonder why there isn't even one of them in your selection. Now as I prefer your reviews to all the others I'm not criticising I'm just curious. Looking for one with the parking guard feature appeals to me but isn't vital but I did read your review on your latest dashcam and it looks so neat. I'll admit to being in my 60's and severely out of touch with latest technology but not entirely stupid so happy to try and learn. Cany you help me out here at all?

The new Vico MF-3 needs comparing as the quality of their sample video appears to be the best I've ever seen in a dash cam (in fact the cam looks more like a compact camera than a traditional dash cam).

It's hard to tell from a manufacturer video, but day and night, their video blows me away with the apparent quality:

I downloaded your video files for this camera and played them back using VideoLAN. Only one file had sound, and all files had black screen for video.

I appreciate your reviews though.

You need to update your codecs. See the FAQs here.

Hi Techmoan,

I recently received my Y Dashcam (the gunmetal version, it was Chinese, but was able to change it to English).
The version is V.08 still. Now I got the oppurtunity via the App to upgrade it to V1.03, my question to you; would you recommend that?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

I like your videos, have seen quite a lot of them.

I always say...if everything is working fine then don't upgrade the firmware unless it adds a very specific feature you desperately need.

January 3, 2017 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

I installed the YI dashcam. Thank you for the great review.

A word about the power-only usb cable - it makes it very convenient to use with the car's USB ports (as the car doesn't try to treat it as a usb stick). For the very few times I need to review the data, I'd much rather pull the memory card (or swap in a temp usb cable), than lose the convenience of the car's usb ports. And in my car, the bonus is that the USB ports only power up when the car is running, which is another convenience (though not for parking monitoring).

Cheers, everyone!

You are very fortunate that you can do that because not all automobile usb ports carry enough amps to run the dashcam.

February 12, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterGeoff S

The YI is a terrible camera. Overheats in a manner of minutes (even in cold weather / AC on full) and then goes out of focus.

June 10, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJohn_d

I have had the yi for over 2 years now, running every day. Never had a single issue with it. It has great night quality as well as day time quality. My only complaint is the same as TechMoan's, the colour stands out quite a bit through a windscreen but that's not an issue for me, if I'm parking anywhere other than at home or at work, I take the camera off the stand (super quick) and place it in the glovebox or take it with it.

June 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMatt

Have just installed theYi dashcam and am very impressed with the video quality, both day and night. in my opinion it out performs many dashcams at 3 or 4 times the price
The app is wery good alowing you change the settings and to view and download clips on a smartphone or tablet.
For the price I think it would be difficult to find a better one.
I have had 2 other dashcame from different manufactures both of which were supposed to be 1080p, but the video quality was very poor and the night time footage virtually unwatchable.

December 29, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTWL

I'm glad you are happy - this is the one I continue to recommend anyone looking for great quality in an easy to use camera for a good price.
