What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links go to the product, but Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the going rate for a real item against the price of a fake one that won't work.

As an example of the extent of the problem of fake goods online...In a recent survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold by Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

Dashcam Review: DDPai M6+ is the best mini cam I've used

In the video below you'll see a full Review of the best Mini Dashcam I've used. I've been using this in my car for six weeks and I can't fault the performance. I'm so happy with it that I have plans to buy a couple more when I can get the money together. Then I can replace the camera in my other car as well as try the dual camera functionality in my roadster.

The highlights of this camera for me are the magnetic mount, the video quality and the time-lapse parking mode. Other notable features include WiFi, GPS and a wireless remote.

I bought mine from the ebay store linked below: (Click your country to see the current price).

UK   US   AU   DE   AT   BE   CA   CH   ES   FR   IE   IT   NL

I’ve purchased from this store plenty of times over the years without any problems. Delivery usually takes approx 10-14 days to the UK.

The US, AU & IE links have been directed to a different store I often use, as the other one doesn't ship to all places.

I cannot report on the long term reliablity of a product that has only been on the market a few weeks...but I do hope it carries on working for a long time, as I really like this one.

Downloadable sample clips here: http://pc.cd/WSdctalK - Please don't be that guy who always tries streaming the videos and then gets back to me to say that they look terrible when streamed. These are provided for Downloading - they look like they were recorded with a potato if streamed over pcloud.

My 'BEGINNERS GUIDE to Dashcams' can be seen here: https://youtu.be/HQ0Tm9FFpKM

UPDATE - I must stress that this is not a basic simple camera suitable for beginners - it has a lot of features and you need to have a bit of experience with apps, smartphones and previous dashcams before you buy this camera.  If you are looking for your first car camera...this is not suitable. I have a list of recommended dashcams and something like the Transcend Drivepro 200 is a good place to start. Big clear screen, minimal options and simple features, no WiFi or reliance on smartphone apps which can lead to potential compatibility issues with specific phones.

UPDATE 2 - OCTOBER 2016

I was getting a lot of questions about this camera - if you read through the comments below you'll see that the same questions keep popping up - so to help anyone out who is having issues with the smartphone features of this camera - please watch the video below - you'll also see a demonstration of the CPL filter in use. I recommend you watch this one on Youtube itself (click the youtube logo at the bottom of the video) and then you can skip to the appropriate section you need.

Many thanks for a very comprehensive review of the DDpai M6+.
I decided to purchase one from the UK eBay link supplied, but was disappointed to find that certain areas of the United Kingdom are excluded, Northern Ireland being one of them.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
Perhaps in the not too distant future this dash cam will be more generally available, maybe even with a UK based supplier.

The camera it's gone start recording when the engine is starting or I need to use the app? Thanks.

July 21, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSeb

It starts recording as soon as you give it Power.

It is an awesome Camera, very happy with mine.

Hope that helps.

Very good review as always. My camera arrived within 10 days of ordering. The night time footage is the best I've seen in a dashcam. There are a few improvements they could make to the App. The facility to edit the downloaded file to exactly the length you want is very good. Although it can be tricky to find the start and endpoints by just scrolling through the thumbnails. I get "video playback error" when trying to play a downloaded video inside the app (iphone 5c). An option to save the video file directly to the phone storage would be useful. Currently, you have to open the video file in the app, then click on very tiny "file save" button. Not intuitive.

Also, when I view an .mp4 file on the computer, numberplates of nearby cars are not clear when the the footage is paused. However, I notice even on youtube I could read numberplates when it's paused. What do other people use to view files?

I'm very keen to see how the dual camera setup would work.

Quite pleased with camera overall.

Was confused why the date was completely wrong until I read a previous post saying it gets the date information from your phone, and is unable to if your phone is set to a 12 hour time. Set my phone to 24 hour and now that is fixed. I did try the reset button, but that doesn't seem to anything at all??

The 'start song' I thought initially was quite querky, but now just bugs me. So I have turned that off, great. But wish I could turn off when it says it has a GPS lock in Chinese too.

Also I would like the option to set the speed to MPH as at the moment it is only in KPH

Some one mentioned they were thinking about getting a M6+ (front) and a Mini2 (rear). Just ordered a Ddpai Mini2 from the ebay uk supplier recommended here Techmoan. Having been monitoring Amazon uk and Ebay uk and today it appeared.

July 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTravelbuddy

Travel buddy that would be me. Did you also get an M6+ to go with it?

July 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAnthony

Anthony. I just ordered the mini2 for now and will make a decision to get another if it turns out to be usable and reliable.

Hi from Canberra (Aus)
Installed a DDpai M6 plus yesterday (thanks Mat, for your terrific review(s) - they were very helpful in choosing my dash cam).
Set up was straight forward (few hiccups initially, using android phone with DDpai APP, due to repeated "poor network" advice - but eventually the set-up process proved to be easy - as have subsequent setting changes - I switched to a Samsung tablet (10" S-tab) with DDpai App as the control tool. It works well and is also much easier for viewing live stream from the M6 plus).
A 128GB Samsung Pro SD card works well in the M6+..
Week or two ago, I contacted Kevin (Sales Mgr DDpai) with question about availability of the Mini2 (to use as a rear cam with ultra HD capability). Kevin advised that it is not yet avail on international market (presumably he meant availability thru an approved distributor - I bought my M6 plus thru the eBay supplier suggested by Mat - absolutely no problems at all with the process - even though I probably do not have any warranty on the item, I'll certainly use same HK based supplier again in the future).
Keven also stressed that the Mini2 is NOT currently compatible as Guest cam (rear cam) for the M6 plus.
He advised that the lesser quality Mini is suitable (given the impressive performance of the M6 plus as front cam, using a std Mini.as rear cam is likely to be fine).
Couple of Qns:-
Removing my microSDcard from the M6+ and hooking it up to my PC (as suggested by Mat) is only way to keep record of the videos.
However, when I try to view the videos that have been copied to my PC, I can only access one 3min clip at a time (then need to close the screen and open next clip, press pay etc). Yet the recorded videos on Mat's review appear to play from clip to clip seamly Can anyone suggest how to achieve that ?
The video clips copied from my SDcard to PC are over 800MB for each 3min clip - cannot attach them to email (file too big). Using zip reduces file to 200MB, but that is still too big for email transmission. Can they be further compressed ?
Regards ~ Leon

July 23, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLeon

Leon, i do video editing as a hobby and to concatenate individual files together so that they can be played back as a single video you will need to use a video editing program on your pc or mac. To share the resulting video ... you can't send via email. Instead you need to load the file to say a cloud like microsofts "onedrive" and then use the cloud software to send a URL link to the people you want to share with. They in turn need to use the link to access your video file on your cloud storage account.

July 23, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTravelbuddy

I'm not really up on the Windows packages, but if you can find a version of 'Registrator Viewer' (now unsupported since the Russian author reportedly sadly died in a motorbike crash)...that should let you cue-up a playlist of files to watch one after the other....but yes as Travelbuddy states, in my video I edit the files together in iMovie on a Mac.

July 23, 2016 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

If you just want to play 1 video after another try vlc player. Its a free player and I think it will do what you want.

Hi,

I've been a visitor of your site for some time now and the Ddpai M6± is my first dashcam that I've bought, thanks to your review.

I just wanted to ask if a Samsung 128gb Micro SDXC Class 10 Memory Card will work with the dashcam, as there seems to be conflicting reports.

Also, is the timelapse feature available other than when the vehicle is parked? I ask as I have a drive across Europe shortly and I would love to be able to use this camera to record a timelapse of my journey.

Kind regards,
Mike.

July 23, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMike

Hi Techmoan - great review. One question though - if using the Cellink with this cam in in it's parking mode - how does the camera know that the ignition has been turned off, and to go into time lapse/parking mode? Otherwise it would just continue recording in normal video mode filling the card up. Many thanks in advance for the answer.

July 24, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMeganeRS

Vehicle movement. If the car doesn't move for 5 mins - Time-lapse is activated (If time-lapse is turned on).

July 24, 2016 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

please keep reviewing dash cams! Whats a good "always on" dashcam. I am also concerned about vandalism to my car when parked (people keying my car, bumping their car into it etc) so I am interested in one with a good battery and always on functionality.

July 24, 2016 | Unregistered Commentercaesar merlin

You have to hard-wire a camera if you want it to be always on - internal batteries are not suitable.

July 24, 2016 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Depending on dashcam charge input, an alternative to hard wiring is a portable battery power pack which has the required charge output and connections. Has anyone adopted this for parking mode and how long does the powerpack last and how low does the powerpack take to recharge, say using the vehicles 12 volt outlets?

July 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTravelbuddy

Whoops "low" should have read "long"

July 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTravelbuddy

Ordered a Mini2 from the ebay uk Techmoan recommended supplier 3 days ago. Received a Paypal email confirming the payment had been completed, but have not received any confirmation communication from the supplier. Is this the same experience of those who have bought from this china based seller?

July 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTravelbuddy

Travelbuddy,

I purchased two M6+'s on July 3rd from the recommended ebay seller via paypal. Several days passed before I received an ebay notification stating 'posted', and I thought to myself "I hope that's not them just getting round to it", but there is still no sign of them. I'm pretty sure the seller thumbnail has changed as I believed it had a '10-15 business days' delivery time, but now there is no mention of delivery time on their thumbnail image. 15 business days = 21 normal days, and the ebay estimated delivery time remains as 13 July to 1st August, so I just have to try not to get disappointed as the postman walks away each day, which is difficult when others seem to be getting theirs sooner. One chap in Canada ordered the day before me and had his delivered 5 days ago. Also, the Royal Mail tracking number given isn't recognised by Royal Mail, but it could be that the ebay seller is simply pretending Royal Mail is the courier to put buyers at ease. Personally I couldn't care who delivers as long as it gets here.

To conclude, when buying from China, as ever (to quote Mat), you have to accept the longest estimate as your actual delivery date, train yourself not to keep running to the front door like a demented puppy, and just chillax. Easier said than done.

July 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterFlyer01

Low and behold just had an email from Ebay confirming the order has been despatched.
Have also sent an Ebay query to the supplier asking if the cpl filter made for the mini 806 will also fit this model.
Has anyone had issues setting up an account via the DDPAI app. I keep trying but the activation return keeps failing due to busy network server?

Hi,

For anyone in the United States, we have the M6 Plus available at Amazon (FBA - Free two day shipping) : https://www.amazon.com/DDpai-Plus-1440p-WiFi-Camera/dp/B01IPSTJZU

Thanks!

July 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSpyTec

Hi

I purchased one of these from Ebay and had it sent to New Zealand.

I have a lot of problems with the Android App and really do not know where to turn for support. I emailed feedback@ddpai.com and have not yet had a response.

The app will not connect to the camera at all unless I disable mobile data (not mobile) just mobile data.

I get terrible buffering if I try to view a video that has been recorded onto a Samsung 32GB Class 10 MicroSD card (supposedly real Samsung) from the device to my phone.

Watching a video on my PC directly from the same SD card is fine with no issues.

I believe that the hardware is all working fine, just the android software is the problem.

Anyone else have issues like this?

Chris

July 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCHris Crowe

I'm thinking to buy one M+ in the near future so I wanted to check the Android app first. Strange thing that the app ask permission to "view information about activity on the device, wich apps are running, browsing history and bookmars". Well, that's not what I want from a chinese app installed in my phone. Made me think twice so I didn't install it after all. I postpone it till I get the cam.

Hello sir,
First I would like to say that I enjoyed very much your camera's review, it was great.
I have a question about using the park guard and the time-lapse video by using the CELLINK B6. You said in your video that by using the power supply (CELLINK's B6, which you recommended) the camera can record for a couple of days. So I looked up in CELLINK's B6 specifications and it was said there that: "Usage time (discharging) DR650GW-1CH = 34Hrs / DR650GW-2CH = 19Hrs". So i would like to know that when you said that the camera can record for couple of days, didn't you charge your CELLINK B6 in that period of time by moving your switch car on, or did you manage to use your camera with your CELLINK B6 power supply without charging it at that time?

Thanks,
Adi Koper.

Hi,
First of all, I must tell you that you are doing a great job with your reviews and keep on going as they are so many of us which need help and that comes to the reason I am writing here.
I would need your help with an advice. If you would have £ 200 and you would like to spend it on a dash cam, what would you chose? It`s gotta have GPS, WIFI, no screen, parking mode and very good quality. I I have for the moment the blackvue 600 and I am not happy about it even with the russian firmware. Could you give me a hint, please? Thank you for your time !

July 26, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTeo

This is what I chose. https://youtu.be/7OPrYBWCAYc

July 26, 2016 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Teo,

You have asked for a recommendation for a dash cam with GPS, WIFI, no screen, parking mode and very good quality for less than £200.........on a comments section for a video review for a dash cam with GPS, WIFI, no screen, parking mode and very good quality for circa £100. Techmoan even says it is the best dash he has had.

I can only assume you are trolling. If not, buy two of them.

July 27, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterFlyer01

Hi folks,

Mine arrived today but I'm having major issues which I'm hoping someone may be able to help with.

I struggle to get the camera to link to my phone and when I do, I have a message that says "card not conform!" on the display :(

I've put a "Sandisk Ultra 64GB Class 10" (from Amazon, not 3rd party) and also tried formatting as NTFS and FAT32 but neither seem to help and now I'm completely stuck!

Not sure what else to do, any pointers?

Cheers,
John
