What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

UK & US LINKS & PRICES BELOW

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

SPECIAL DASHCAM CARDS

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for dashcams...here's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

Dashcam Review: DDPai M6+ is the best mini cam I've used

In the video below you'll see a full Review of the best Mini Dashcam I've used. I've been using this in my car for six weeks and I can't fault the performance. I'm so happy with it that I have plans to buy a couple more when I can get the money together. Then I can replace the camera in my other car as well as try the dual camera functionality in my roadster.

The highlights of this camera for me are the magnetic mount, the video quality and the time-lapse parking mode. Other notable features include WiFi, GPS and a wireless remote.

I bought mine from the ebay store linked below: (Click your country to see the current price).

UK   US   AU   DE   AT   BE   CA   CH   ES   IE   IT   NL

I’ve purchased from this store plenty of times over the years without any problems. Delivery usually takes approx 10-14 days to the UK.

I cannot report on the long term reliablity of a product that has only been on the market a few weeks...but I do hope it carries on working for a long time, as I really like this one.

Downloadable sample clips here: http://pc.cd/WSdctalK - Please don't be that guy who always tries streaming the videos and then gets back to me to say that they look terrible when streamed. These are provided for Downloading - they look like they were recorded with a potato if streamed over pcloud.

My 'BEGINNERS GUIDE to Dashcams' can be seen here: https://youtu.be/HQ0Tm9FFpKM

UPDATE - I must stress that this is not a basic simple camera suitable for beginners - it has a lot of features and you need to have a bit of experience with apps, smartphones and previous dashcams before you buy this camera.  If you are looking for your first car camera...this is not suitable. I have a list of recommended dashcams and something like the Transcend Drivepro 200 is a good place to start. Big clear screen, minimal options and simple features, no WiFi or reliance on smartphone apps which can lead to potential compatibility issues with specific phones.

UPDATE 2 - OCTOBER 2016

I was getting a lot of questions about this camera - if you read through the comments below you'll see that the same questions keep popping up - so to help anyone out who is having issues with the smartphone features of this camera - please watch the video below - you'll also see a demonstration of the CPL filter in use. I recommend you watch this one on Youtube itself (click the youtube logo at the bottom of the video) and then you can skip to the appropriate section you need.

My camera also arrived quickly. Seems pretty good so far although I can't get it to go into time lapse mode. I also got a cellink b so it has power. I have checked and it's set up for time lapse and park guard but when I view the files on phone or in laptop they are recording at normal speed? Any ideas anyone?
Also the cellink does not seem to link dab radio and as soon as you plug it in the dab radio goes to no reception. Turn it off and comes back. I tried moving it around the car but it's the same so must interfere with it which is a shame.

Thanks

Matt

Please try Dashcam Viewer version 2.1.9, which addresses an issue in the detection of GPX files in the 103gps directory. Note that only the Windows version of Dashcam Viewer works with the MP4 video container format produced by the DDPai M6+.

August 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJohn

Check through every file - the time-lapse files are stored with a different file name - look for something with _25 at the end. Put the files in date order. I've seen a few people who thought they weren't recording then find them at the bottom of the directory.

I have same issue as above ^^^^ Kevin at ddpai told me to check I have latest firm and have class 10. I have latest firmware just awaiting delivery of Samsung class 10 32gb. The one I have was unbranded and does not overwilrite old files, once full its full!! .. Arse!!!

August 20, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterpaul

Paul
You will have to reset the camera by putting in a paperclip in the reset button on your camera and hold it down for over a minute until you can start the camera from new then put in new password
hope this helps

Hi, after watching the review of the Ddpai M6+ it was exactly what I was looking for and purchased it using the link provided.

I have a quick question regarding the app if anyone can help?

After registering / logging in with my details on the next page there are two lines to input details:

+ios_offline activity place phone_holder
+ios_offline activity_verify place phone holder
Submit

Does anyone know what details I am to put in these lines?

Thanks in advance

Well, now my DDpai is DD Dead...

It powers up and plays the hello message, but does not proceed past that.
The red power light and green light just stay solid.
I've tried the reset button.
It reboots after holding the button down for 45 seconds but is stuck at the same point.
Also tried removing the SD card, different SD card, different power supplies...

I'm leaving it unplugged for the next few days to see if draining the battery helps... But I am not holding out much hope.

August 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterViper DaSnake

I've had my 6+ for a month now but it has developed a fault. After a couple of minutes recording the sound stops, quickly followed by the video. 30 seconds later she fires up again with the hello message. This then repeats at ever shorter intervals. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I've reset the camera and changed the sd card to no effect.

August 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMarko

It might be worth testing out the power supply, I'd suggest sliding the camera off the windscreen and plugging it into a 2.1amp USB wall charger in the house to see if it still malfunctions.

August 22, 2016 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

I finally recieved the ddpai polarising sticker and installed it. I had pretty strong dash reflections before and while they are not totally gone I would say that the filter got rid of around 70-80% and it is now barely noticeable.

August 22, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterrichard

Richard, i have the ddpai mini2 cam and can't find a cpl
for it. The lens is encased in a 16mm diameter round protrusion from the
barrel shaped camera body. Have emailed Ddpai for advice on how to minimise
reflections of the dashboard, but no response. What size diameter is the M6+ cpl sticker?

August 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTravelbuddy

Hi Travelbuddy,

You could try the filter, not sure how well it would stick to the lens housing as the sticker is the size of the entire front of the M6+.
Also it is a few mm thick; it might be plastic but I guess it is glass as the shape is cut pretty crudely to match the oval plate.

You may want to try something I was toying with as a backup plan if I wasn't too happy with this one. (it's about OK although it bugs me that I can't turn the filter to find it's sweet spot for my setup)

There is a magnetic cpl filter for the mini 0803 (reviewed on this site) the 0803 has a magnetic ring around its lens protrusion and the filter just snaps to that, and can be rotated.
I was considering sourcing an appropriate size ring magnet (tons of size options with a few google searches) and sticking that to my M6+ and buying the mini 0803 cpl filter to work with that. (the plan was to get the filter before the magnet to ensure getting something that would fit)

I believe Techmoan had one of the 0803 cpl filters, not sure if he still has it to give a quick measure and perhaps see if he thinks this is feasible?

August 22, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterrichard

Thank you Richard. I really wanted to install a circular filter as per a DSLR camera, in order to adjust and remove the reflections. So your advice is much appreciated. I 've found an 18mm diameter cpl and the reason for stalling the purchase was the problem of how to fix it to the cams body. Did'nt realise you could purchase magnetic rings. Now off to investigate. Cheers.

August 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTravelbuddy

It may have been the min 0806 rather than 0803; it was one of those.
I had seen some for about a tenner on ebay.

There are also cpl filters for many of the various action cams so you might get lucky if you try to find one of those that is close to fitting?

August 22, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterrichard

I quickly found ring magnets with either an appropriate inner or outer diameter. Finding one with BOTH is the trick. fingers crossed they are out there.

Well...
Two pieces of good news.

1 - My camera powered up just fine today.
I left it at work so I would not be tempted to mess with it.
When I got to work today, I powered it up and it started working today.

2 - New Firmware..!!
Yesterday or today (I get my timezones mixed up) they posted a new firmware update

Google Translate:

I have just changed my SD card from an unbranded 32gb class 10 to the Samsung evo 32gb class 10. And I'm happy to say it's made a huge difference to the operation of the camera. The time-lapse is now working and the phone app is also alot better. On the Old SD card it wouldn't overwrite the Old files and I haven't had chance to test this yet on the Samsung but I'm hoping it will solve that issue too!

August 23, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterjames101

For anyone who is curious to see if their sd card lives upto it's label; there are a few utilities about for testing the things.

Here's a link to one of them.
https://sosfakeflash.wordpress.com/2008/09/02/h2testw-14-gold-standard-in-detecting-usb-counterfeit-drives/

Apparently there all sorts of ways that a "cheap" (and I'm sure some of them get sold at full price too) sd card can be manipulated so a computer will see it as genuine. However the data you attempt to store on these is not going to have a happy ending.

Maybe an opportunity for a future Techmoan video; checkout a few sd card testing apps and then run a batch of genuine & fake cards through them to see how they fare?

August 24, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterrichard

I just tried the newer version of Dashcam Viewer (version 2.1.9) and am now able to see the map data but only on individual selected files. Video playback is not yet supported. The merge video feature works fine. Hope it can get sorted in the future soon.

August 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBarry

I've only used it a day and it was super easy to set up really. These are some things to consider if you are buying one...

> I'd like to be able to select several files at a time from the gallery when deleting. Currently, you have to select delete select delete...
> There's no usb port on the device to connect a usb cable you have to remove the SD card to get at the footage.
> The colouring and shape of the device perhaps makes it a little more obvious than most.
> There are no MPH it's KPH only. It would be good to press on the speedo to switch between the two or otherwise have the option in the app settings.
> The app doesn't know what's on the camera, I'd like to be able to see a list of files/dates/times and have the option to wifi those across.

Otherwise a great camera!

August 25, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMatthewT

You cab multi select the files to delete. hold down on a file until a green tick appears then press on other files to select them too. Then press the delete button a the bottom.

You can view all the footage from the camera and use the slide bars under the liveview to select a start and end point then you can download to your phone there is a little download icon.

I have emailed DDpai requesting hat they include Mph.

I have a question about the camera's ability to work during high temperature. Recently I noticed that when I get into my car and start driving when there is a high temperature outside, the camera is recording about 1 minutes to 2 minutes and then shut down (I know it is shutting down because I hear the sound which indicates on shutting down). When it happens I look at the camera's leds and only the red led is on (which indicates what the camera has power) and the green and the blue are off. Then, after a couple of minutes, when the car is staring to cooling down, the camera is restarting itself and then start working normally.
Does anyone familiar with this issue? does it suppose to happen?

Thanks,
Adi.

Hi, I like your dash cam videos & find them very informative. I currently have a cheap dash cam which works well enough, but provides low resolution images & has the annoying habit of losing its clock/time settings - I'm retired & just use the car a couple of times a week (I prefer walking), the internal battery doesn't seem upto the job so I'm looking around for a better camera. The current one is a "Vehicle Blackbox DVR" which I think is a pretty much a cheap generic copy from China. Does the M6 Plus HD keep the clock/time settings for a reasonable time - ie. >4 days without use?

Do capacitor based dash cams suffer this problem as well?

Regards Tom

Been using the M6+ for a few weeks now. I was thinking of buying a second camera for the rear of the car, but noticed on the other forum that you can't connect a second M6+. The information suggests that only a Mini will work as a second camera. However, the Mini2 is not much more expensive and is a better spec. Does anyone have a M6+ and Mini2 connected to it?

Otherwise, if I got a second M6+, I could have a single button triggering a snapshot on both cams. I think I would just lose the picture in picture facility in this case.

I was thinking, it would be really clever if someone made a waterproof case for this camera so that it could be mounted behind a rear bumper or the front grille. Would it still receive the gps signal behind the bumper?

Has anyone dared to remove the guts from the fixed mount? I was thinking of using a dremel to slice open the mount and see if its possible to keep the unit functionality intact but, make it more compact. Perhaps installing it into a wedge mount.

How do I playback the time-lapse video at the slow (recorded) speed using the SD card in my PC.

August 29, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBarry Y

Hi, I can get the snap shot and 10 second video over to my android phone.
I cannot see the normal recordings on the app to download them on to the phone. Any ideas ?
The app seems badly layed out.

Other than that, a very well designed dash cam.

August 29, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterglenn

@Barry...I used iMovie....any software editing package or playback software that can adjust the speed...e.g.VLC can do this.
@Glenn...Go to the live viewfinder screen and then press the scissors icon.
I really recommend spending a bit of time in the app. Press every button, go into every screen, try every option. If there's something you haven't clicked...click it. You can't break it, so don't be afraid to experiment in the app.

Hey all,

I just wanted to share that I emailed Kevin that was mentioned earlier in the comments about pairing two M6+'s together and he replied quickly that they will not work together as others have mentioned. He stated what would work so I'm going to copy and paste below so it's available for everyone. He answered on August 29th.

"Thanks for your inquiry.

Firstly, I am sorry for any confuse about DDpai products. Currently, M6 plus only could pair with DDpai MINI, M6/M6C and M4. M6 plus could NOT pair with MINI 2 and M6 plus. Because it is chipset issue.

if you have any question, please let me know.

Best Regards,
Kevin Lee"

Kevin's email address is kevinlee@vyoutech.com and he answered very quickly.

August 29, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRod

I returned my second M6+ and ordered the Mini and set it up today. It all works seamlessly. Easy to pair and when you have the phone in horizontal mode you have picture in picture and you can flip back and forth. I also paired one of the remote snap buttons to both cameras so when I hit it, I get a picture and video from both front and back. The mini also is smaller and not so obvious in my rear window.
