What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

RECOMMENDED CARDS (for action cams - see dashcams below)

CLASS 10 UHS-1 CARDS (For HD Cameras)

U3 CARD (For 4K cameras)

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

Please do a video on the 119S if you have the time, thanks

Hi Matt, the UK URL connecting to is throwing phishing alerts at me. Is it correct ? Not Amazon UK ?

November 9, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTraction Tim

That is seems that google has taken a disliking to the URL shortening site Perhaps it's their way to get people use instead. I've reposted the links and the problem seems to have gone now.

Hey Matt, you said you pushed the clock back one hour on 10/30/2017 time stamp....but we actually put the clocks back a few days ago. Whats up with that?

November 9, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterstudent

I'm in the UK.

November 9, 2017 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Hi Matt, thanks for your reply. I never knew other parts of the world have their own different types of clock changes!

Im thinking about getting the DDPAI m6 that you reviewed. Do you also have a second dash cam for the rear?

If yes, what do you use and how is it hooked up to work with the m6?
If not, in what way do you think i can add to the m6 for the rear and make them work simultaneously?

November 10, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterstudent

i am sad to see that the DDPai M6plus isnt longer sold. i got it right after your review and i absolutely love it. if only the wifi were a bit faster...

November 10, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterOliver

Hi! Ill got My self a cassette tape player after watchinh your video avout cassette tapes. Realy good video! Watched it twice!

But as Ill now started collecting tapes Ill Have a question Ill. Cant find and anser to.

The de-magnitizing. ”Self destruction” of the tapes. Is it the Recording thats is getting weaker or is is the tape utsedd

Ill was thinking that IF its only the recording on the tape. It would be possible to rip the audio on tape to a computer and Tham recorder it back on the same original tape.

Tnx for a great show!

Love from swe!

November 13, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSebastian from sweden

I wouldn’t worry about it. I’ve never listened to a tape enough times to wear it would take some doing. However yes, in theory, you can just record back into the tape again and the recording will be restored to its former glory.

Would like to see an optional GPS module.

November 13, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSportcat

Just wanted to let you know that the probable reason that the card isn't readable is mac OS is that, since it's more than 32 GB, it's probably formatted in exFAT. If you use a 32GB (or smaller) SD, or you manually format your >32GB SD with FAT32, it will be readable on your mac, and probably on the camera as well.

Frankly, I'm surprised that the camera can read/write exFAT formatted disks. exFAT is usually the only reason a device is not compatible with SDs larger than 32GB.

November 14, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterGeorge Schizas

It's not that - here's the info copied out of the youtube video description text box

Q) What is the SD card format?
A) Windows reports it as FAT32 (with errors), Mac OS can't read it at all. A 64GB card formatted by a dashcam will often be ex-FAT, so it appears it's a custom format...or something else odd is occurring.
The camera formats the card whenever an unused card is first can see this taking place at the start of the video. It also recommends that you format the card if you re-set the time (I noticed this when moving the clock back an hour). The wheres and whyfores of the precise formatting system used by the camera aren't what's important, it's how that may or may not affect the user. So to sum it up again - if you have a Windows PC you're fine and if you only use the WiFi app you're fine...but if you only have a Mac you can't read the SD card natively.

November 14, 2017 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Having trouble getting the App
I did get it from Yi themselves but it did not accept any kind of account registration, unless it's just me.
And does it work with UK sourced camera.

Note -

Unable to play the sample videos you made.
Downloaded them OK, but no player I have can play them?
Can you advise?
I have iPad mini.

November 16, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJc

I’ve never tried playing the files on a smartphone or tablet..they’re only really provided here for playback on a computer.

November 16, 2017 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Well they Don’t play properly - some sound only. On Windows fine.
Did you say it reduced quality for WiFi play (on phone for quick display to Police for example), so maybe at less resolution these devices will play the videos after all.
I get the camera at the weekend I hope, so I’ll find out no doubt.
Thanks for reply - appreciated.

November 17, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJc

Well this was a timely review. My faithful little SJ1000 "dashcam" has died over the weekend.
So I wondered - what has Matt seen. Oh Mr AMAZON!

November 20, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterChris

Hi TM, Thanks to your review (and tweet) I´m thinking of getting this today, just one question. Is the wifi on all the time? I don´t want to fiddle with the screen every time I want to transfer.

November 24, 2017 | Unregistered Commenteral

Yes it’s off unless you turn it on.

November 24, 2017 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Thank you for the quick reply, I also just saw where you had already mentioned it - sorry about that!. I think that would put me off. As there´s no dedicated wifi button, I would have to go through the menus every time I need to transfer. Will have to think on theis one.

November 24, 2017 | Unregistered Commenteral

Hello Matt,

Can I use the dashcam upside down? Does the LCD screen also turn?

November 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRob

No & no.
It’s not suitable.

November 27, 2017 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Hi again, looks like I misunderstood your reply. I thought you meant wifi is always off without interaction but now I understand it actually stays however you left it. So I can leave mine on.
For some reason it seems you need a GPS signal to connect to the wifi. My phone has really poor GPS and does not connect so I have to use my "GPS phone"

November 28, 2017 | Unregistered Commenteral

Hi Mat

As you have owned a DDPAI M6+ - and now this Yi 2.7k, what would you say is better image wise?

I have the M6+ just now, but looking to upgrade in my own car and move the DDPAI into my work vehicle.

Keep up the great channel, my go to site before parting with the cash!

December 12, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCharlie

I haven’t compared the video, but I’m still happy with the M6+ video and this camera is too big for my car.

December 12, 2017 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Thanks for the reply, it seems there’s an extra £28 off - so £62 for this Yi 2.7k on Amazon, I’ll take a punt!

December 13, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCharlie

Hi Matt.

First of all - thanks (as ever) for another excellent review.

I took the plunge and got this for my Dad for Christmas. It's a very smart little camera and ideal as his first dashcam. However, it doesn't seem to be able to rotate the screen when it's mounted on the dashboard (as opposed to the windscreen). I've tried reaching out to Yi but as of yet, no joy. Did you come across this issue whilst testing it out, and if so, did you work out how to resolve it. No worries if not!

Thanks again!!

January 8, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterBen

It’s not something I’ve tried as dashcams are designed to be mounted to the windscreen not on top of the dashboard. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a dashboard mounted model - I'd expect the angle of view would be wrong..and amongst other issues it could be obscured by the wipers or point into the part of the screen the wipers don't clear.

January 8, 2018 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

I think that as I am used to dashboard mounting my GPS (well, Waze on the iPhone), I just kind-of expected it to be a common use case. On reflection, it makes complete sense not to mount it that way (for the reasons you give). Cheers for the response, much appreciated!
