What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links go to the product, but Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the going rate for a real item against the price of a fake one that won't work.

As an example of the extent of the problem of fake goods online...In a recent survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold by Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

The Mobius 2 everything-cam is finally up to the job

It’s been a while since I finished a camera review. It’s not for a lack of trying, I’ve been testing cameras but most of them weren’t good enough to warrant spending the time needed to complete a review.

The Mobius 2 was one of the cameras that initially didn’t impress. Upon its release last year the video quality was a noticeable step back compared to its popular predecessor. Six months later, it’s a different story. Finally the firmware has caught up with the camera and it’s now capable of producing some great results. Watch the video below to find out more.

------PURCHASING-------

The manufacturer is in Hong Kong and sells the Mobius 2 worldwide directly through ebay. Click your country below to be taken to the Mobius 2 on their store.

Hi Mat, brilliant review of this long awaited update to this loveable carcam. In all honesty, there doesnt seem to be any big differences - I thought the new one would perhaps have jumped to 4K by now. However, as I dont have a 4K tv anyway, not a huge issue. I loved the video and have always loved the simple Mobius design, I have two of the original Mobius and they are still going strong (just about). I'm wondering if this firmware will apply to the older model as well? Love the comedy sequences at the end by the way - very creative.

I think the problem was they completely changed the camera's internals with the idea that h265 would be adopted quicker. It turns out that they were a bit early for this and the new chips they used weren't giving the results people expected. It's taken a while to get it all working properly. The firmware for the Mobius 2 is different to the Mobius 1. The Mobius 1 works fine though, I don't think it needs any tinkering.

The same producer, also released a Mobius Mini, which seems to be quite similar to the Mobius 2.
Can you do a quick comparison between the Mobius 2 and the Mobius Mini ?
I can't decide which to buy.

Do get in touch if you're ever filming in Liverpool again. I'd like to buy you a pint.

@anton. I have mobius 1 and mobius mini, decided not to get the M2
M2 -M1are quite different cameras. THe mini has only 30 mins battery, cannot be used as a dashcam (overheating).
MM is less flexible (you can't replace/exchange lens) and the list of features is different from the M2.
It depends on what is your intended use. MM is really tiny.

Hi,
Great review of the Mobius 2, I've had it for a few months (had Mobius 1 until it died) and after a few teething problems, I am generally happy with it.

Just wanted to mention that there is, in fact, a Mac version of the setup software, which works almost exactly the same as the Windows version. It can be found here: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2085613-Mobius-setup-software-for-Mac

Thanks and keep up the great reviews.

I'm guessing that the sensor itself is just 1920x1080, which would explain both the low photo resolution and the uselessness of the rotation mode.

Hi Mat

Do you know if they're going to do anything to make this weather-resistant version, either via a case, or a V2 of the Nautilus with this new spec? I'm running an SJCAM M10+ on my cycle helmet and it's great but it is enormous; if I could switch to one of these for the helmet and move the M10 to rear-view, that would amazing.

I haven't heard anything...but then again I haven't been in touch with the manufacturer for this review. They never made an official waterproof case for the first Möbius cam, so I doubt you'll see anything for this one.

Hi Mat, how about doing an in depth video on the best res/setting for night vision, I have a A119 and a A119s cant make my mind up which is the clearest setting for night vision

Good review. Have you found a ribbon cable extension for the image sensor? I'd want to mount the main body out of sight with just the tiny lens visible from the outside. I think you did that as a separate review for the original Mobius.

Have none of the manufacturers come up with a decent system with the image sensor connected to a dvr via a longer cable? As per your suggestion in the Sept 29 2014 Marcus review. If the image sensor part could be made IP55 then it could even be hidden in the front bumper or inside the radiator grille and not suffer from the effects of the windscreen. I would never fit one of the massive dashcams on the windscreen - with all their tentacles of wiring sprouting out of all edges!

Please keep the dashcam reviews coming. I'm still using an original Mobius and DDPAI M6 thanks to your reviews. Anyone who I have given a lift to in the car always loves the startup voice from the DDPAI.

I haven't looked into the idea of extension cables...it might be worth looking on the RCGroups forums...because if anyone has they have.

February 16, 2017 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Hi Mat, many thanks for your continued techmoans!

Between the DDpai and Mobius2, which offers greater sharpness and lower noise (particularly in low light) in your opinion?

If anyone else has tried both, your views would be welcome also!

February 18, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAlejandra

@ MattER: how does the Mobius Mini compare to the Mobius 1 as far as video quality is concerned? especially in low light.

Does the Mobius 2 have better video quality than the Mobius 1?

February 19, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterOnno

Very helpful review as always - I have used your reviews as the basis of buying 2 cams already. I am looking at the Mobius 2 to replace my Mobius 1 which seems to have irredeemably given up the ghost. Can you help on one thing - the Mobius 2 manual makes no reference to the file lock feature which existed on the Mobius 1 (press the mode button while recording). Have they they omitted this feature on the Mobius 2, or have they omitted it from the manual accidentally?

February 23, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAnthony

Unfortunately it's not something I tried. You might get an answer at https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/forums/mobius-2-m2.171/

February 23, 2017 | Registered CommenterTechmoan

Re file locking - thanks for the link - I checked there and it seems it is not a feature which the Mobius 2 has, at least at the moment.

Hello Mat,

first of all thank you for the great reviews you upload on youtube. they are very helpful and i always check whether you reviewed an item i m interested in.

i just purchased the mobius2 to use as a bike cam and although the image quality is great (1080p at 60fps), i noticed that when i pause the footage (i m using windows media player) the picture seems to loose sharpness so much so that car number plates are extremely difficult to read. i dont have this problem with the mobius1 which is still running strong. i bought the mobius2 for the 1080p 60fps capability however this issue left me a bit disapointed to say the least.

do you have any recommendations to solve this problem. is it because the M2 saves footage as mp4 and the M1 uses MOV?

thanks in advance

Hi - can you please recommend some sort of cheap spy cam I can leave on my car dash overnight, as I have someone wandering about my yard / stealing things / possibly spying on me etc. It doesn't have to have night vision - I'll just leave the outdoor lights on. Just something that will film all night that I can play back on my laptop. I'm not sure if such a thing exists (not cheaply, anyway) but if you have any suggestions on something I could buy on ebay etc I'd be grateful. I am not tech savvy. Cheers.

Can I change the lens and use a lens extension cable like on the original Mobius camera? And can I swap the battery for a capacitor?

Hi,

I've kicked up a fuss about the missing "Lock" feature, and I've just updated to the latest firmware (2.08) and it seems to now move video clips into the folder called "LOCK" when the MODE button is pressed.
