What SD CARD should I buy?

If you want an SD Card for your camera - these are the ones I use and recommend.

I'd strongly recommend not to buy any SD cards off ebay - I've heard about too many issues with counterfeit cards - often sold on by unwitting resellers. My inbox regularly gets messages from people who bought a £150 camera then cheaped out and bought a £3 memory card on ebay - Then when it doesn't worth they blame the camera! It doesn't make any sense. Good memory is cheaper than it's ever been - see the links above.

A lot of HD cameras will not work properly with cards larger than 32GB (cards over 32GB are usually SDXC rather than the SDHC standard used by 32GB cards. SDXC cards use the ex-FAT system rather than FAT32 - in short they are a different standard). - so don't just buy the biggest card you can afford - read the specs in the manual to see what it accepts.

SPECIAL DASHCAM CARDS

The SD card in a dashcam is re-written over, more frequently than in other types of cameras. Some manufacturers void their guarantee if an SD card was used in a dashcam. So, no surprise, there are special High Endurance SD cards made just for dashcams...here's some.

VERY IMPORTANT. These links take you to the product, however Amazon have three different ways of selling. There's Amazon Direct - This means that you are only dealing with Amazon themselves, then there's other sellers that use Amazon's facilities - these show as Fulfilled By Amazon and finally there's Market Place sellers that advertise on Amazon, but operate independently.  I strongly recommend that you only use the first...the Amazon Direct - Sold By Amazon option. Even if it appears that you are paying a couple of £/$ more it is more than likely you are comparing the price of a real item against the price of a fake.

To give you an idea of the extent of the fake goods problem. In a 2016 survey by Apple - 90% of the 'Apple' chargers sold through Amazon - using the other the two methods..which includes the "Fulfilled by Amazon" option -  were found to be counterfeit....90%!

Finally! A good & affordable Front & Rear 1080p DashCam

For the last few years I've been trying to find a Dual 1080p front & rear dash-cam that I could recommend, and here it is.

I've been using this for quite a few weeks now and I have no intention of replacing it with anything else in the forseeable future.  To see if it's suitable for you too, watch the video below.

If you are unclear on any of the terminology or features mentioned then I've provided a Guide To Dashcams (link at the top of the page).  Below the video you'll find the Amazon Links and downloadable sample clips.

You can buy the Dual 1080p Aukey Dashcam on Amazon. (All links below are affiliated links).

Amazon US http://amzn.to/2ExFCCy (Likely to be out of stock)
Amazon DE http://amzn.to/2EqqZxK  (I've been told dashcams are not legal in Germany)

Recommended Memory Card - Toshiba Exceira 64GB

Amazon US: http://amzn.to/2BNtAUH

Amazon CA: http://amzn.to/2nP5ArT

Amazon ES: http://amzn.to/2o5Qz44

Unfortunately as I was finishing editing this video, Amazon US ran out of stock and don't have an ETA for any more, however it does still seem to be readily available elsewhere. I suspect there's a container ship slowly making it's way to the US full of Aukey Dashcams as I type...however I can't wait forever, so I've published this video for viewers residing elsewhere.

My Passenger side window was smashed in broad daylight 13:15 Last week and all they stole was my dashcam. I won't be leaving anything in the car from now on. This happened in a busy multi-storey car park with frequent security patrols and lots of mums and kids. I need a cam I can detach easily or hardwired and invisible to your average crook

Thanks for this review - very interesting. I wasn't so keen on the thickness of wire from the rear camera. I think I would need to find someone to install this for me. Finding that someone could be difficult.

Just a little comment to your remark "(I've been told dashcams are not legal in Germany)" in the Amazon links list:

Actually in Germany using a dashcam is not illegal, but using recordings for anything but 'private use' might be difficult.
Especially publishing dashcam records (without garbling recordings of persons and number plates) could provoke legal trouble. But also forwarding recordings to insurance companies and even the police (!!!) could bring heavy penalites from the data protection authorities (in Bavaria). More information in german from the ADAC - German Automobile Association: https://www.adac.de/der-adac/rechtsberatung/verkehrsvorschriften/inland/dashcam/

According to this article using dashcams is very problematic in Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal, Switzerland and especially Austria (here a legal permit is required to operate a dashcam).

Greetings from Munich, Bavaria - and thank's a lot for the great review,

Florian

Thank you for the information. It’s good to hear it from someone who knows.

Does this dashcam keep the date and time without a GPS module?

February 21, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterO

Yes - it would be useless if it didn't.

Amazon.com in the US just posted availability - the front & rear camera combo will be available on February 25th.

I've been wanting to buy a dual camera for a while just couldn't find ones I liked and good performance. I also purchase the GPS Module, however the instructions state place next to camera on windscreen, not a problem, the issue is that it comes with 2 meters of cable that now has to be hidden. Awaiting Aukey's comments as to why the cable is so long.
Also there does not appear to be any firmware download for this product.

I don’t understand why you’d want to risk bricking something by updating the firmware when it’s already working perfectly? What issues are you having with the camera other than the wire length?

Hi Matt

I've just downloaded some of the sample clips you've posted. Am I expecting too much from these "cheap dash cams" to be able to read number plates in well lit conditions ? Unless the vehicle fills the screen and is central I'm finding it almost impossible to read the plates.
Case in point. In the car park front view video. The first car on the left appears to be a dark coloured BMW X5.
That's all I could tell you because I can't read the reg plate whatsoever. The same again in the same video at 16-18 seconds. The last parked car before the exit ramp. Directly under the "Exit" sign. Again I can't make out the reg.
Is this considered "a well lit situation" or is that "poor lighting" ? I would consider it to be good lighting and also a reasonable distance. Have I set the bar too high ? Is it possible to pause a dash cam video and be able to read number plates without having to spend ££££ ?

As a side note I have just purchased a Yi Smart Dash Cam .
That was supposed to be the bargain of the century for quality at the price point.
At 1080p60 I can only describe the footage in clear bright sunny day as shockingly bad and grainy .
I have yet to try it at it's highest resolution setting of 2k30 so i'll reserve judgement . But so far initial impressions are not good.

P.S. Excellent review as always keep it up .

Thank you.
